Stock up on fur coats and felt boots! This is my paradoxical advice to the warm world. Earth is now at the peak of one of its passing warm spells. It started in the 17th century when there was no industrial influence on the climate to speak of and no such thing as the hothouse effect. The current warming is evidently a natural process and utterly independent of hothouse gases.

Philly Tube Steaks [Dan Collins]
Geno’s Steaks owner Joey Vento says it’s one thing to criticize his “When ordering, please speak English sign”, but attacking one of his workers goes way beyond anything that’s been said.” It was just trash talking. It should have never led to that. It was something that happened so quickly that I wasn’t prepared for it because I never thought it was escalating to that,” says Vento. Joey Vento hopes
French Video Game Demonstrates Famed Prowess, Fortitude [Dan Collins]
A new on-line video game is opening old wounds from the September 11th terrorist attacks. Images of planes crashing into the Twin Towers, as part of the game, have relatives of those who died at the World Trade Center very upset. The Internet video game is called New York Defender II. It can be found on a French Web site under the “Chaos” category. In New York Defender II, the goal
We Can Haz Daddy! [Dan Collins]
In this photo released by the Wildlife Conservation Society, “King” an adult male marmoset carries the offspring he fathered with his mate, “Squirt,” on his back at the Bronx Zoo in New York, Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008. His primary responsibility being child rearing, King will guide the twins into adulthood. Marmosets are among the world’s smallest primates with their heads just a little larger than the size of a
BFD [Dan Collins]
No, it’s not that book by Roald Dahl: A Japanese company Tuesday unveiled a new device that will allow people to “speak” through their ear so they can use their mobile telephones in noisy places. The device — named “e-Mimi-kun” (good ear boy) — doubles as an earphone and a microphone by detecting air vibrations inside the ear, developer NS-ELEX Co. said.  So?  Greenwald can type outta their arse without any newfangled
The Ron Paul Effect [Karl]
In yesterday’s “Traffic Report,” I hypothesized that center-to-left blogs bucking the trend of declining traffic were doing so — at least in part — by blogging about Ron Paul. Gawker has some evidence that hypothesis is correct. Related: Silicon Alley Insider asks whether Drudge has lost his mojo. Clearly, he needs to link more stories about Ron Paul (h/t HotAir.)
New Blog in Town [Dan Collins]
Go check out Theo Spark’s offerings over at Last of the Few (An Englishman’s View).  The site has a variety of charms in its new incarnation, not so different from those of its old.
Iowa Cowkisses [Dan Collins]
IowaHawk puts the significance and the fundamental rightness of the Iowa cowkisses into perspective, but there are some things that he, as an Iowan, is not allowed to say, that I, a Wisconsinite who for several years posed as an Iowan to infiltrate their strange society, can reveal without directly endangering my family. Iowans developed the idea of the “cowkiss” originally as a kind of lark on which to send unsuspecting
Overheard at an Iowa City caucus site [Karl]
Ernie: Well, I guess if I look at it from that angle, I can see your point. Bert: So, you think it’s Fred then? Ernie: I’m still not sure. Could be… Barney.
Iowa 2008: Beyond Electric Boogaloo, Part 4 [Karl]
In Part 3 of this series, I argued that the Iowa caucuses will likely have no impact on the campaign for the Democratic nomination (which is likely to be won by Sen. Hillary Clinton). But I did not analyze the GOP race. At The American Prospect, Thomas F. Schaller argues that Iowa will also be meaningless for the Republicans. However, in setting forth the case for Iowa being generally meaningless, Jay Cost
