In the comments to a (somewhat) unrelated post, our old pal Karl shows up and writes: As Jeff has chosen to drag our off-blog discussion on-blog again, folks might as well get the entire conversation. After Jeff e-mailed, asking me to phone him, I responded as follows: At this point, I would prefer e-mail. It not only would cause me to be more thoughtful, but also would ensure that we
August 2008
We Have Standards, Y’Know [Dan Collins]
I’m so glad they never pander to our baser instincts: It’s August. It’s the slowest news month of the year. Newspapers are dying on the vine. But nobody wants to touch a sordid tale about a politician’s love life? Former Rep. Gary Condit should have been so lucky. Bill Clinton, Larry Craig, and Ted Kennedy can only gaze in wonder at the dearth of coverage. In February, the New York
McCain Passes Test of Non-Elitism [Dan Collins]
Back in April, I suggested a variety of ways in which candidates might prove that they weren’t elitist, including by going to Sturgis. Well, McCain went to Sturgis and passed that particular test for me, only to have elitist morons on what is reputed to be a comedy site insinuate that he was being inadvertently funny by not realizing the humor latent in his comment about encouraging his wife to
Free Kwame!!! [Dan Collins]
A judge on Thursday jailed indicted Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick for violating the conditions of his bond by crossing the Canadian border without permission. The 38-year-old mayor, once seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, faces a trial on charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and official misconduct stemming from a sex scandal and his handling of a whistle-blower lawsuit. He went to neighboring Windsor, Canada, in July
Gitmo jury gives bin Laden driver 5 1/2 years [Dan Collins]
That seems pretty reasonable to me considering the little I know about the facts of the case. YMMV.
Apropos of nothing 6 [cranky-d]
My father told me, as his father told him, “Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.” I have found that to be true more than once in my life.
The Evidence Against Bruce Ivins (D-MD) [Dan Collins]
Ace has an (for now) exhaustive compendium of the evidence the FBI claims to have against Ivins, and an interesting coda, which somehow reminds me of some of the dust-up surrounding the Adkisson murders.
Predecessor to Shakespeare’s Globe Located [Dan Collins]
The Theatre, Shoreditch, where many of Shakespeare’s earlier efforts were first played. In all likelihood, Julius Caesar was the first played at The Globe.
Route Causes [Dan Collins]
Greyhound has scrapped an ad campaign that extolled the relaxing upside of bus travel after one of its passengers was accused of beheading and cannibalizing another traveler. The ad’s tag line was “There’s a reason you’ve never heard of ‘bus rage.’” Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said Wednesday a billboard and some tunnel posters near a bus terminal in Toronto are still up and would be removed later in the day.
Four Months…and this? This?
As I noted before, Eliot F (malaclypse the tertiary) did a fantastic job on the artwork and rebranding for the catchwrestle site. Now, a little over four months later, the guy working on moving the site over to CMS — who has never returned my phone calls, and will only reply to my emails without actual replying to their content — sent me the following email: Gents – pls review.
