Shit [Dan Collins]

I’m pretty much screwed. People who have more than two alcoholic drinks a day develop Alzheimer’s disease five years earlier than those who do not drink, a comprehensive study linking the condition to lifestyle has found. Those who smoke are affected by the illness two years earlier than non-smokers, while those who smoke and drink are likely to hasten the onset of the disease by seven years.

Andrew Sullivan Freak-Out Advisory: Elevated [Karl, w/apologies to AoSHQ and Allah]

The Andrew Sullivan Freak-Out Advisory System should be elevated by tonight’s Democratic debate on ABC, probably to “Nauseated” or “Appalled.”  Is Excitable Andy gobsmacked? Yes, he is! 9.20 pm. Obama’s convoluted capital gains tax answer was a brutal reminder to folks like me that he is indeed a redistributionist, and someone who seems to see the tax system as a way to decide what people “deserve” to have and keep.

Are You My Mommy? [Dan Collins]

At The Examiner, Josh McIntire has a grotesquely hilarious post, entitled, “I Miss Ugly Mommy“. Just in time for Mother’s Day, a plastic surgeon is releasing a book about how to tell your kids about mommy’s enhancements.  Where, I ask, was this book when Chastity Bono was a little girl?  I mean can’t you just see Cher reading this to her at bedtime? What’s next – “New Daddy’s Money Is

Ooh, That Smell [Dan Collins]

Can’t you smell that smell? Ooh, that smell— The smell of commodified anti-capitalism! “[T]here is a tacit anti-consumerism just to the smell of patchouli.” —Zoe Williams It smells like victory. Man. David Thompson has a wickedly funny post up about Guardianista Zoe Williams’ disappointed take on the radical chic commercialism of the Glastonbury Mud Music Festival, complete with photos of the festivities.

Tribal Politics [Dan Collins]

My power of invention is brutally impoverished by comparison: When H. R. 2786, the Native American Housing and Assistance and Self-Determination Reauthorization Act of 2007, was considered and passed the House Members of the Congressional Black Caucus and others insisted that the bill include a provision that would prevent the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma from receiving any benefits or funding under the bill until the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is

You Don't Say! [Dan Collins]

My stars! Well, I never!

Al Franken is a big, fat corporate tax deadbeat [Karl]

Democratic Senate candidate Al Franken’s personal corporation didn’t file corporate income tax returns in California from 2003 to 2007.  He now owes more than $4,000 in back taxes, penalties and fees.  Franken campaign spokeswoman Jess McIntosh said if Franken’s business owes the money it will pay up, which is nice, given that it is illegal to not file or pay corporate taxes.  The AP adds: AFI was in the headlines

What Light Through Yonder Window Breaks? (CraigC)

Here’s a great vid of the Beatles doing a Shakespeare sketch on the Beeb, circa 1964.  It’s quite an arresting snapshot of a moment in time, both culturally and for the boys themselves.  I wonder if ol’ Will spun in his grave when one of his characters became a major part of the Wham-O Company.

The book on Rick Ellensburg, Thomas Ellers & Wilson [Karl]

Jules Crittenden nails it in noting “the unlikelihood that any effort to present a serious book entitled Great American Hypocrites, entirely limited to one side of the aisle, could be anything but an exercise in hypocrisy.”  But Jonah Goldberg overstates it in suggesting that the Internet’s most infamous sock-puppeteer is “one of the most easily and profitably ignored voices in the blogosphere.”  Ellensburg’s raging paranoia makes him a useful case study of how Bush Derangement Syndrome eventually metastasizes
