Packers Hangover [Dan Collins]

A group of displaced Wisconsinites in Vermont yesterday prevailed on me, after 2 years of bugging, to accompany them to a sports bar in Essex Junction to watch the Packers-Vikings game. The deal was, in addition to a beer a quarter, we had to drink a shot of schnapps everytime the Packers scored. They scored a lot. I’m hung over. I’m guessing Sinner and Moronpundit may be, as well, today.

PANT [Dan Collins]

Liz Stephans and that guy she blogs with demonstrate what we morons do when we view her image, from the Blog World Expo.

David Thompson: Dramatic Radicalism in the Age of State Subsidy [Dan Collins]

David points us to an article discussing the prevailing orthodoxy: At various times, and in various conversations, I wonder out loud whether any of them could imagine a play that challenged, say, the values of multiculturalism. Mostly I am met with baffled silences. Sir Peter Hall sums it up for me when he says: “I’m sure there are people who would like to write that sort of play, but they

Happy Veterans Day [Dan Collins]

A big thanks to all those who’ve ever served the United States in uniform. We owe you more than we can say, but that won’t stop us taking a shot. I’m going to repost an idea that I posted in the Pub a week ago, and see if there’s any interest in such a project, or whether it’s already being done. Feel free to add anything you like in the

Another moment of unabashed pragmatism

I had planned on doing a bit of posting about the various talks and tours from this weekend’s YAF West Coast Leadership Conference, but it turns out there’s a beach about 50 yards from the hotel. And lots of bars. So, well, you know. Brief summary of days 1 and 2, for those interested: “Liberals = Evil; Lagavulin by the glass = $9.70” And yes, my pecs are marvelous.

Chavez’ Narco-Syndicate Paradise [Dan Collins]

Moises Naim is the editor of Foreign Policy magazine and the author of “Illicit: How Smugglers, Traffickers and Copycats Are Hijacking the Global Economy.” While President Hugo Chavez has been molding Venezuela into his personal socialist vision, other transformations — less visible but equally profound — have taken hold in the country. Venezuela has become a major hub for international crime syndicates. What attracts them is not the local market;

Liars [Dan Collins]

The AP, doing what it does best: The United States ranks near the bottom for infant survival rates among modernized nations. A Save the Children report last year placed the United States ahead of only Latvia, and tied with Hungary, Malta, Poland and Slovakia. The United States tries to save lots of preemies and other babies that wouldn’t be considered worth the effort elsewhere, which is why these stats are

Mailer Remembered [Dan Collins]

Brian McMurphy, who’s making me miss Smantix a bit less over at Six Meat Buffet, has up a judicious appreciation of Norman Mailer’s life and works.

Might Have Become A Coen Bros. Film [Dan Collins]

had it not been so patently racist. Sexism rears its ugly head: “I’ve never heard of one woman beating another woman to death,” said Hayes, hired by Linda’s ex-husband, Seymour, to represent the family. “You know how much work it is to beat somebody to death? Women shoot them, they stab them, they throw them in front of cars. I’ve never seen this – and I was in Homicide!”

Callete, Pendejo [Dan Collins]

Mr. Charming. Spain’s King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Saturday to “shut up” during closing speeches by leaders from the Latin world that brought the Ibero-American summit to an acrimonious end. “Why don’t you shut up?” the king shouted at Chavez, pointing a finger at the president when he tried to interrupt a speech by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. Zapatero was in the middle
