You know what day it is, right? Howsabout you trot the little guy out and let him do his thing —

Well, I would if I could. But the truth is, he took off about three days ago with the twenty bucks I gave him for his old Gibson acoustic and a ratty rucksack stuffed with cheese sandwiches and port wine. Heading off to find himself a Tea Party protest, he told me. — Not that he cares much about smaller government, mind you. Just that he’s “always wanted to bang

Scalia’s role in ObamaCare’s Constitutionality

It’s come down to this. From the WSJ: The constitutional challenges to ObamaCare have come quickly, and the media are portraying them mostly as hopeless gestures—the political equivalent of Civil War re-enactors. Discussion over: You lost, deal with it. The press corps never dismissed the legal challenges to the war on terror so easily, but then liberals have long treated property rights and any limits on federal power to regulate

Climate Wars II: The Empir(icists) Strike Back

One of the hobby horses of this site has been my recurring critique of “meaning” as a function of interpretive consensus (itself a rather lazy extension of meaning as a function of convention) — an epistemological maneuver that I’ve argued is incoherent outside of its end game, which is to control narratives, and in so doing, to seize power by way of deciding and policing identity claims. Well, maybe. Or it could just be that picking up a Land Cruiser with 0%

Corey Haim’s “Notes from the Afterlife,” 5

Here’s something most people probably wouldn’t guess about Heaven: on Thursday nights, the most exclusive tequila bar on the west side hosts after hours cock fighting — kind of a yuppie slum fest for the bored Hugo Boss set, with hedge fund-types and the idle rich costumed in cheap straw cowboy hats and custom snakeskin blazers cheering on a half-dozen or so angry roosters, the only authentic Mexicans in sight

What rough beasts?

Pursuant to Darleen’s post, I noted in the comments how I can not remember another President cheapening the office with such alacrity as Obama has. Singling out specific conservative talk show hosts on whom to blame the “extreme” tenor of political discourse in this country? Casting them as opportunists, rather than earnest critics? What happened to dissent being the highest form of patriotism? Makes me wonder: What is more “alarming”?
