Lesbians: Men with Breasts [Dan Collins]

Lucky bastards:

Ivanka Savic and Per Lindström, of the Department of Clinical Neuroscience at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, now report that the brains of heterosexual men and homosexual women are slightly asymmetric—the right hemisphere is larger than the left—and the brains of gay men and straight women are not.

We beat that horse over at the Pub.

  2. So the right hemisphere hangs a little lower?

  3. Ric Caric says:

Yet more experiments in homophobia from Protein Wisdom. Yawn.

  4. McGehee says:

Yet another failed experiment in coherence from Prof. Caricature. Yawn.

  5. The Lost Dog says:

    Oh, shit!

I’ve always wondered abouy my droopy eye. Gravity and age explain all my other droopy things.

  6. memomachine says:

    Hmmm.

I prefer to refer to myself as a “bulldyke with a sprinkler”.

Cafe Hayek posted a link a week or so back of neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor giving a lecture at TED about her stroke. It’s worth a watch: http://tinyurl.com/3l9h9y

The interesting thing is how she parses the function of the two hemispheres, which in turn gives a clue as to why male brains tend to be larger on the right side. It has everything to do with processing the physical world, moving about in it, anticipating where it is going and coming, etc. Men, it seems, are apt to do more of this kind of stuff than women are and build bigger right hemispheres as a consequence. How that works for lesbians would be an interesting problem to solve.

  8. you suck, Sdferr.

    ;D

  9. Dan Collins says:

Dr. Caric, I don’t believe you can demonstrate how this post is homophobic, but I will give you until this evening before I turn your comment into a post about your incoherence–as McGehee rightly puts it.

  10. Q30 says:

Can Larry Summers have his Harvard job back now?

  11. MarkD says:

No, Larry Summers cannot have his Harvard job back. The truth is no defense against hate speech.

Then they’ll be citing things like lower temperatures to try to disprove global warming. Are you some kind of heretic?

  12. Radish says:

What do the brains of asexuals look like? (I’m serious; asexuals are about 1% of the population.) I’m all intrigued by this, as a straight woman software engineer who works with a whole lot of gay and asexual men software engineers…I’m wondering if our brains are outliers compared to normal gay/women’s brains.

(FWIW, I don’t disagree with anything Larry Summers said; people conveniently ignore that variation in women’s abilities is greater than the difference between the male and female averages.)

  13. Sdferr says:

Wait a minute Radish, (if you are serious and not just goofing for the sake of goofing, which is ok too) are you suggesting that software engineering somehow aggregates the tiny 1% in disproportion to other occupations? And further you write ‘our’ in a context that isn’t clear as to whether you classify yourself as an ‘asexual’ or as software engineer? While admitting a category such as asexual is possible, it might be helpful to narrow down our terms and fix upon an agreed definition of the condition before we start peering into brainpans willy-nilly. So what are we to refer to when talking about ‘asexuals’? Thanks for asking the question though, as it could be interesting.

  14. […] Yesterday, I posted a link to an article about scientific research indicating that men’s and lesbian’s brains are similarly asymmetrical, with a preponderance of development in the right hemisphere, whereas women’s and gay men’s brains are more symmetrical. I jovially suggested in the title that lesbians were “men with breasts.” After I’d retired for the evening, Dr. Caric appeared in the comments and stated that my post was homophobic. […]
