I’m actually doing a 13-week training program now called P90X. And it is kicking my ass — particularly the Plyometrics.
Explosive jump training. Ugh.
Pull-ups are no picnic, either — particularly if you suck at them.
By the way, I only bring this up because today I have to go out and pick up the DVD (along with Hot Fuzz) — but before I do, I have to get through an hour-long plyo workout. And it hurts. So I’m procrastinating.
Hot Fuzz was awesome, but then I’m just a rethuglican so what would I know about film. After all, it didn’t have gay cowboys, promote racial harmony or deal with the blood diamonds of Seirra Leone, so it couldn’t possibly be “good.”
I think I’m going to order it the easy way, from Amazon.com.
I thought it was funny that one reviewer referred to the guy who played King Leonidas as looking like “a buff Soupy Sales.” Apt. Still a kick-ass movie, though.
Hey Jeff, my husband’s a chiropractor and has been doing a lot of sports therapy/training/conditioning. He really likes the P90X workout (for others, of course).
As for me, I’m tired just from reading about the 300 workout.
I’ve been off for three weeks doing nothing but low-intensity cardio (ie: walking to the ice cream store, to the bar or to the beach), but I have been really interested in the 100 pull-up workout lately. Where you do 100 pull-ups in as few sets as you can, with rests that include other exercises like crunches, push-ups and lunges. You can vary your grip between sets, just get your chest to the bar. It’ll probably take me all day, but I’m going to try it in about three weeks, once I getback to where I was before vacation.
Might take me longer than that, since I was supposed to jump back in to training yesterday, but managed to find every excuse not to do it. Now I’m typing this because I don’t want to do squats. And of course, the only reason I’m working out at all is to look good at the beach and guess what? I’ve been and left, so why can’t I let my fat ass rest?
Zelda — Good to hear. The reviews have been generally very good. For my part, what drew me to it was it’s honesty: you are going to have to work, and you’re going to have to work long.
The second 2 phases of the program, in fact, give you the option of adding an additional 3x weekly and 5x weekly 43 minute cardio workout. So you are working out anywhere from 7-12.5 hours each week, with very little down time between moves.
My wife is doing P90X with me — though we only exercise together on the weekend (Kenpo and Stretch). She has an easier time with the plyo than I do, but then, she was used to running 5 miles every morning, whereas I make it policy to run only when chased.
I decided to try this workout because I’m getting back in shape to play baseball again next season, and I needed the cardio and the fast twitch muscle training. Not to mention the flexibility.
I had never done yoga before, and from my understanding, the yoga incorporated here is not beginner’s yoga. I’m doing pretty well with it, though the first 40 minutes or so are brutal (the entire workout is 90 minutes; the later half concentrates on balance).
This P90X workout looks interesting. I’m training for a marathon (in December, Vegas), though, and wonder if it would be possible to combine the training for that with P90X without killing myself. Too bad, it looks like a good system.
Oh, and Jeff, your TW software has a very sick sense of humor. TWs: lovely O’Donnell
I was worried it was some kind of trick, i.e. if I was capable of putting those to words together, then my post would not go through.
I’ve heard good reviews also. My husband says it makes a great deal of sense from a musculo-skeletar perspective. I want to do it, but I have to start slow, as in getting both shoes on within 1/2 an hour of each other. That’s my goal.

Huh. For years my ab workout has been to suck in my gut so I could get fingers on my belt buckle.
Talk about tough.

I did the 300 workout and all I got was a spear through my head.

I don’t think the hollywood media would have a problem portraying it to be truthful with you. They always tend to find out a way.
