Can Someone Please Explain “Value Added”? [Dan Collins; UPDATED]

A Norwegian appeals court has ruled that striptease is an art form and should therefore be exempt from value-added tax (VAT).

The owners of the Diamond Go Go Bar in Oslo had refused to pay VAT of 25% on entry fees as tax authorities demanded.

The local authority had taken the club to court over its refusal to pay tax.

Lawyers for the club’s owners argued that striptease dancers were stage artists just like sword-swallowers and comedians and deserved the same status.

“Striptease, in the way it is practised in this case, is a form of dance combined with acting,” the judges ruled, according to AFP news agency.

Okay, but what’s value added supposed to mean, if it doesn’t apply to your entertainment removing his/her clothes?

I’m putting a gag order on sword-swallowing comments, you comedians.

UPDATE: Sword-swallowing jokes are art; gag order lifted.

Do clubs in Norge work similarly to here in the States?

(The club owners provide a venue and booze (offer void where prohibited), and the dancers pay the club owners to perform and keep the rest of the money.)

If so, the dancers could be said to add value to an otherwise empty stage with a pole.

    – Added value….Now that’s what I’m talking about…

    – Dan…”added value” is purported to mean some sort of action that upticks the price of a comodity, or resource, or service, in some way. It’s applied randomly, where ever theres a good chance the suckee will not, or cannot, afford to protest it effectively. Sometimes reffered to as the “poor sucker” tax (so too speak).
