Well, that sucks. But if you were deaf, you wouldn’t even be able to hear Kevin Federline sing. And imagine what you’d be missing.
Someone who’s working on the problem at the University of Michigan has a request, passed on to me via Jeff:
> This is Shelley Batts at Retrospectacle at ScienceBlogs
> (http://www.scienceblogs.com/retrospectacle), and I’ve been a reader of your
> blog.
> I am a Neuroscience PhD student at the University of Michigan, studying a
> cure for deafness. I have a very small request. My blog is currently a

> to help me with school, however since neuroscience is a niche blog, it is
> hard to get the word out. Could you help me, and possibly give me your
> endorsement? I am the only neuroscience blog in the final 10.

Now, I admit that I’m partial to neurobiology, in part because my son Aidan has Childhood Onset Schizophrenia, but any help in this regard would be appreciated, particularly because she had the good sense to ask Jeff and the PWers. I do love innocence and naivete. It’s just beautiful.
Shelley forwards this conspectus of her research:
My thesis is focused on the regeneration of the sensory cells in the inner ear, which are required for the perception of sound (hearing) as well as balance (the vestibular system). Over time, we all lose these cells due to noise and environmental damage which causes hearing loss and deafness. In addition, many people are born without these cells and are therefore deaf or have balance problems. My research has contributed to the development of several therapies that, when administered to the inner ear, can regenerate these cells and restore hearing and balance. This is accomplished by introducing several genes to the inner ear which are important during its early development, which encourages exisiting cells to become sensory cells. This therapy is extremely promising, but requires much more testing and perfecting before it can be applied to humans. This scholarship would help fund my research, which I believe will one day be of significant impact to health of humans.

SOUNDS pretty good to me. Get it? SOUNDS? Bwahahaha . . . ha . . . heh. Ahem.
Okay, you bastards. You’re emailing and asking, “What’s in it for me?” Shelley, correct me if I’m wrong, but with the Enhanced Vestibular System that Shelley’s experimentation may make possible, it MAY be possible for YOU to drink more without tipping over.
ALSO: Though I’m sure that it matters not a whit to all of you cerebral guys who hang out here, Shelley’s totally cute. Check her link. Not that that should have anything to do with your decision to vote for her or not on the merits of her research. Not at all. You’re not that shallow. But if you were Allah, and she were a dexterpolipundit, you’d be all over it. That’s all I’m saying.

– I wouold ask if she has any idea what
the fuckshe’s getting herself into, but at this point that question would be…. well pointless.– She might try changing her blog name to:
“BusHitlerBash”, or “AllUrBDSrOurs”
– Might kick the hits up a few notches, or would that be Natcho’s….
– So I clicked already…You owe me another schooner on Patty’s day Collins….With or without the toe stand….
I did as asked, too, Dan.
Since we can’t be there to see you dance, can you tape it and put it on YouTube?
TW paid83. No, he didn’t pay me a cent to do his bidding.
BBh–
Duly noted. Maybe I can exchange some airline miles with my brother-in-law from Dublin who works for Guinness.
I can’t decide which to vote for. They all sound delicious.
Mmmmmm. Kambiz Kamrani
Oh, do try the Pranam Kolari. Delectable. And the Shelley Batts are really nice too.
– Pranam Kolari….Sounds like prawns and calimari – yes definately delicious…
– With a name like Batts, she may be a real sweety, but she definately choose the right vocation. She may have to give some thought to changing that for the shingle over her office door. Gawd knows the shrinks already have enough bad press.
They’ll give her the office in the belfry, I’m sure.
Drink more? I’m in.

Groovy, baby!
– “Sir, I’m sorry to disturb you, but theres a boy at the door that says you’re his father…”
“Hmmmmm…. Offer the little nipper a nip…”
“I did sir….He’s says he doesn’t imbibe….”
“What? …Then throw the rascal out on his ass….No kid that doesn’t drink is any kid of mine….”
– The aforepost was obviously also a Fields quote….
Yikes. The guy who’s currently way in the lead blogs at dKos.
– Too bad for them they seldom can get that sort of turnout on election day….
Yes, I gotta take the kossak down! Voting goes on until Nov 4 midnight by the way.
And, yes pehaps this research might improve “drunken balance” but lets just say thats not the primary indication.
– I’m assuming you can vote at least once a day, which won’t offset the “vote flouders” from the gaggle of the perpetually outraged, but we’ll give it our best shot Shelly. (despite the fact you picked that potato perv Collins as your PW mentor. We forgive you.)
Supposedly only one vote per IP address…..
– Ahhh….perhaps you have not heard of that delightful service called gmail….Vee have our vays…..
Hmmmmm… Is there a statistician in the house?

Actually, its just a matter of messed-up spacing.
Look at where the italics begin. Shell only has 16% of the vote! Destroy the kossack!
