The November Surprise [ahem]

Holy shit.

The result of pursuing policies of appeasement and demonstrating weakness in the face or aggression–policies the Democrats will surely embrace if they return to power. Pulling out of Iraq now would be a disaster of the greatest conceivable magnitude. Can world war be far behind?

According to another article in the Times:

A civilian nuclear programme would not give any of the countries automatic access to nuclear weapons but building up nuclear knowhow and training a core of nuclear physicists and technicians is a vital first step in that direction.

Yeah, that’s what we need: a world of Islamists with nuclear knowhow.

Cheney and Rumsfeld have been giving Bush bad advice on the occupation.  But the solution is not to adopt the Murtha-Pelosi-Kerry plan of cut and run.  The only option is victory.  I hope big daddy Bush, Baker and his cronies have come up with such a plan (count be skeptical since I suspect Prince Bandar has been influencing things).  But maybe Baker can show us he is a patriot, not sucking the cock of every Saudi prince out there.  But even status quo (as painful as that is to watch) is better than running.

We are making progress ever so slowly because our military is that good.  I want the administration to focus on acheiving victory.

And Sy Hirsh can go fuck himself too.

  2. cynn says:

Holy shit indeed.  I think you are soiling your panties over nothing.  These countries, including your cool big friend Saudi Arabia, appear to be referring to desalinization projects.

But we’d better bomb them just to be sure.  And send troops.  Lots of troops.  Oh, wait…..

  3. Crankypundit says:

As for nuclear knowhow, what are we going to do.  Any decent grad student has that knowledge.  We can try to supress it all we can, but part of the reason we went into Iraq was to forstall the inevitable by changing one country.

We went in light and are paying the price.  It is too late for a do over and going in heavy, but we can try to work with what we have now and forstall a complete civil war.  If we can keep the Shiites sane and from going into Ali nuthouse land and keep the Iranian mullahs out, the Shiites and Kurds will keep the Sunnis in check and maybe something can be salvaged that is ok.

  5. AJB says:

Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, UAE and Saudi Arabia seek atom technology

What’s funny is that a lot of those states are propped up by the US. How the hell this development is a good thing for Bush is beyond me.

  6. Philomathean says:

The fate of the Middle East is sealed now.  With all the nuclear material and know-how that will be floating around, it won’t be long before Israel is destroyed.  The Sunnis and Shiites will then start using atomic weapons on each other.

This is the nightmare about to become reality: a world where any city, anywhere, can vanish in a blinding fireball at any given moment.

  7. McGehee says:

Attention: World about to end due to Bush policies.

Right. Because North Korea and Iran were never any trouble at all until January 20, 2001.

    God you guys are lunatics.

You take that back! We are not God!

  8. Umm says:

re: Because North Korea and Iran were never any trouble at all until January 20, 2001.

Those files have been gathering dust on Bush’s desk for nearly six years man.

Plus he gave the store away to India for nothing, encouraged everyone else to nuke-up in self-defense by attacking a far weaker non-nuke country, strengthened Iran’s hand in the region immeasurably, weakened US’s diplomatic status so much there’s virtually no drag with Russia and China when it counts, etc…………….

Then again maybe it’s not his fault. How could he have possibly anticipated that there’d be problems he’d have to work on when he became president?

  9. RiverCocytus says:

    Yuk, yuk.

Eh, we’ll just come out swinging like we always do. Or we’ll erupt in a column of radioactive flame. Both seem like viable options.

    Pass me a scotch.

How cute that you guys are already plotting your strategy in what’s left of the Middle East.  Yep, come out swingin’.  Kill Krazy Kitten, hold for applause!

  12. 6Gun says:

I’m sorry, what’s left of what?

Well, hell.  Just because you hate brown people, disagree with the UN and your Congress, were wrong about Iraq, and are clueless doesn’t mean you’re worthless.  Still cashing those welfare checks, right?

Damn him for using mulinational diplomicy!

How could he have possibly anticipated that there’d be problems he’d have to work on when he became president?

Now that’s just silly, everyone knows all the worlds problems are his own fault.

Rueters News Service – Tehran, Iran, 10/16/08

Flash to all newsdesks: Dateline Iran

    – A thermalnuclear detonation has been reported within the past hour from the Vacinity of the Kardulla Nuclear test range 20 miles Northwest of Tehran at approximately 8:14 pm GMT. A State department spokesman has indicated that information is sparse with details of the massive blast, said to be estimated as 10 Megatons yield, and encompassing a radius of approximately 75 miles of total destruction. Goverment Science advisor, Al Gore, issued a short comment, with more to follow shortly. “We think the Iranians accidently detonated the device, but we havn’t been able to establish communications with our embassy to confirm as of yet. In fact all communications to the area are in temporary blacked out. We will update the American public as soon as possible.”

    – Local NSC scientists have been warning of just such a possibility, but the White House staff, including President Clinton are presently in conference aboard Air Force one, and unavailable for comment at this time.

Then again maybe it’s not his fault. How could he have possibly anticipated that there’d be problems he’d have to work on when he became president?

I figure he was just hoping that when Carter surrendered to the Iranians in ‘79 and Clinton sent Aunt Bee over to dance with Kimmee in Pyongyang, they’d solved everything for him. Guess he was wrong.

Now be a good little leftist clown and go crawl back into the cesspool at Kos ok? Ok.

  17. Sockpuppet in training says:

These countries, including your cool big friend Saudi Arabia, appear to be referring to desalinization projects.

This, my friends, is willful ignorance.  maybe cynn thinks the Arab world is worried about greenhouse gas emissions.

  18. RiverCocytus says:

Haha, you all must think we’re not taking this seriously enough. Maybe so. Of course, we’re not the ones making the policy decisions, so its really a moot point.

TW: Just so you know, RC is thinking about the right to bear arms right now. Why? Because he likes how he looks with a holster. Don’t tell him I told you!

    Blast!

  19. actus says:

Cheney and Rumsfeld have been giving Bush bad advice on the occupation.  …  The only option is victory.

And thats not what the advice Cheney and Rumsfeld have been giving ?

  20. ahem says:

What this reveals–to me at least–is that the US is now viewed as a spent force. And the UN is revealed as impotent as well. In other words, the West is on its last leg. Steyn is right.

Now the world’s bullies will come out in force: no one can stop them.

actus: I take your point, but I think it’s a problem of trying to win without actually hurting anyone. There were no such concerns during WWII. You can’t fight and not fight at the same time. I think the lesson is that we have to accept that war is what it is, we can’t turn it into something else. Otherwise, your enemy sees your reluctance to proceed, rightly, as weakness and come in for the kill.

cynn: You sound ugly when you’ve been drinking.

  21. actus says:

There were no such concerns during WWII.

Partially because the goals were different: total surrender of an organized force. Here? not so much. Victory in WWII was thought of as destroying 2 countries. Not so much in Iraq. Here victory is in creating one (or maybe 3?) countries. You go about that with very different concerns.

  22. McGehee says:

Hey everybody! Actus wants us to destroy Iraq!!!

  23. actus says:

Hey everybody! Actus wants us to destroy Iraq!!!

What else can you conclude from “Here victory is in creating one (or maybe 3?) countries.”

  24. Mikey NTH says:

North Korea develops a nuke, and people predict that other countries in the region will probably do the same.

Iran is developing a nuke and suddenly people are surprised that other countries in the region express interest in nuclear power.  No, I can’t understand that.  Why wouldn’t they want to welcome their Persian overlords?  I mean, it isn’t like there are any religious, ethnic, and national rivalries in that area.

    /sarcasm off/

So, any ideas, real ideas, on what ought to be done about this?  Diplomacy hasn’t worked real well at halting Iranian nuclear ambitions.  Anything else?

N.B., that isn’t directed at the normal commenters here who actually will think about this, it is directed at those who would rather rend their clothes and assign blame.

  25. RiverCocytus says:

What else can you conclude from “Here victory is in creating one (or maybe 3?) countries.”

    Franken-nation! It LIIIIIIIVES!

TW: River’s probably had too much Coffee…

Elegant environment and tolerant too. Press release like, I found this to be a sobering surprise.

You know about Quds Day? Iran*s day of celebration for Israel*s and America*s Nuclear vaporization?

While the world was focusing on North Korea last week, Iran’s mad scientists were hard at work preparing for the annual Quds Day celebrations.

Most of the Western press outlets that reported on the popular holiday simply downplayed it as just another “anti-Israel” day. However, this year’s revelries focused both on calling for the annihilation of America and embracing Iran’s nuclear program.

The celebrations included proclamations by the country’s leaders and activities for university students and artists.

Isfahan University’s Mechanical Energy College took first place in a Quds Day competition for its design of a pilotless plane that can be used for *suicide attacks.*

The director of the Iranian Broadcasting Organization of Music Production, Mohammad Mirzamani, composed a symphony dedicated to “the victory over the Zionist regime,” and the country’s religious Web logs were told to report on all the festivities.

  27. ahem says:

Diplomacy without strength is just talk.

The secret to diplomacy is that it works when the alternative to it represents a real threat to the other side. Because the West appears not to mean a damned thing it says any more, all its diplomatic threats are idle and so diplomacy no longer works.

To get it to work again, we have to demonstrate that we are serious. In brief, we have to toughen up and do a whole lot of things we’re reluctant to do because of the opinions of the pacifist Left. Apparently, they view any attempt to save your own life as evidence of fascism.

They can’t understand that peace does not descend effortlessly from the heavens. Peace is the result of a lot of work and pain. We’ve lived peacefully in the US for the last 60 years because, in part, my old man–and millions like him–held his ground in the boiler room of a destroyer while the Japanese navy shot volleys of torpedos at him and the other 1000 guys on his ship.

I fear we’re just going to have to accept that Iraq was an artificial construct that was being held together by a strong man. Now that certain forces have been unleashed, we may have to accept that only partial victory may be possible. Maybe all we can do is plant a seed as we did in Viet Nam and let the Iraqis take it from there. Maybe we are expecting too much, too soon.

  28. actus says:

They can’t understand that peace does not descend effortlessly from the heavens.

After the last 3 years in Iraq, why would anyone think that?

  29. 6Gun says:

After the last 3 years in Iraq, why would anyone think that?

Good question, actuse, and a positively brilliant implication for your continuing enlightment.  Had you asked the Left?

  30. 6Gun says:

Speaking of enlightment, actoon, what’s you take on the relative value of western civilization?

  31. actus says:

    Had you asked the Left?

Their answer was that the more difficult things turned, the more indignant and obstinate their speeches and rhetoric became. Anyone with that sort of response should lose on tuesday.

  32. 6Gun says:

Their answer was that the more difficult things turned, the more indignant and obstinate their speeches and rhetoric became. Anyone with that sort of response should lose on tuesday.

Ah.  And naturally, their method then was that the more indignant and obstinate their speeches and rhetoric were, the more difficult things turned.

NPR just generously reminded me that democracy is entirely undeserved by Arabs.  Fancy that—I hadn’t even contributed.

Anyone with that sort of mindset should lose on Tuesday.

  33. Mikey NTH says:

Oh, so the ignorant and obstinate left should lose on Tuesday?  Thanks for the props, actus!  Don’t worry, you’ll always have your hate to keep you warm.

Remember, actus and monkybot support the troops.  Just not those from or allied to the United States.

  34. actus says:

And naturally, their method then was that the more indignant and obstinate their speeches and rhetoric were, the more difficult things turned.

Nah. I think that the reality on the ground isn’t so influenced by their talk. Tahts part of the problem. All they do is is get more and more strident in their rhetoric.

NPR just generously reminded me that democracy is entirely undeserved by Arabs.

    Undeserved? wow. got a url?

  35. actus says:

Speaking of enlightment, actoon, what’s you take on the relative value of western civilization?

Relative value? I kind of like it. The old suitcase nuke eh? Time to freak out and start inspecting those ports! And I live in a medium sized city too. Damn.

  36. 6Gun says:

    got a url?

    The old suitcase nuke eh?

Yeah, not to worry asshole, it’s only Hiroshima-sized.

  37. 6Gun says:

All they do is is get more and more strident in their rhetoric.

    Isn’t “rhetoric” spelled prescience

Because five or six years ago when the anti-Bushco stridency began to hit full stride, the Kos Left just knew what 90% of the country, Congress, and both previous administrations along with dozens of nations and the UN didn’t four years ago.

Credibility is so your strong suit, actard.

  38. Ian Wood says:

  40. Bravo Romeo Delta says:

Ok, maybe I’m being dense here.  Actus usually, to varying degrees, irritates the crap out of me, but in this set of comments, maybe I’m missing a modifier or didn’t understand a pronoun correctly, but I’m not seeing what is driving the irk at Actus.

What I think I’m seeing – and correct me if I’m wrong – is that the broad response of the left to the situation in Iraq has to get more and agitated, rather than doing something like proposing a solution, and thus, having no suggestions or options on Iraq do not deserve to garner votes solely for the fact that they dislike current foreign policy.

Could someone buy me a clue ticket?

    Thanks,

    BRD

What is repeating today, exactly as it did in Chamberlain*s time, 1938, leading up to world war II ?

Will Michael Moore mislead and contribute to the deaths of millions?

Do you have a clear picture of the Iran Mullahs, the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas,

And the common thread running through them all?

Are you afraid you will panic if you glimpse some truth the Media is keeping hidden from all North Americans?

I have often said joining the dots was important.  These

Experts use that very same phrase.  Without the true picture of current threats, we have no hope in hell of pressing our government to protect our free and civilized lifestyle.
