Wow

The last time I teamed with a buddy to beat up a 13-year old we were both 9.  But a tough 9.  Like a couple of tiny, wiry bulls.

Not that I’m passing judgment, mind you.

66 Replies to “Wow”

  1. CraigC says:

Has Child Protection Services been notified?

  2. OneDrummer says:

Uhhh, yeah. So, whatever happened to educating the young man? I guess bitch-slappin’ him is what compassionate conservativism is all about.

  3. claudette says:

Jeff, weren’t you running through the paddock with a butterfly net?

  4. Jeff Goldstein says:

That was a tennis racket.  And I was strolling briskly.

  5. stately gent says:

I can’t believe what I just read. Picking on and THREATENING a 13-year old kid. I mean, was nicely asking him to fix it totally out of the question?

These guys aren’t conservative, they’re petty, vindictive thugs and should be mocked accordingly. Thanks for the heads-up Jeff.

  6. ap0c says:

Good Grief.  Is that an overreaction or what?  Congrats guys.  Heck, I started a forest fire when I was a kid and I didn’t get that much of a chewing out.

  7. TomB says:

PUNCH HIM IN THE THROAT! PUNCH HIM IN THE THROAT!

  8. erp says:

Is this what happens when anonymous bloggers are singled out and lionized by the formerly disdained MSM?  Do their fellow bloggers get jealous of those who have been lionized?

This is so distressing. Bloggers were a separate and distinct group of truth seekers, not egomaniacs.  They merely wanted to share what they knew to be the truth with others because the truth wasn’t and still isn’t, available in the MSM.  Now some want on to the gravy train of fame and fortune.  They want recognition and the protection of copyrights.  Were the pictures in question taken by the bloggers themselves or were they lifted off other media?  Who owns pictures posted on websites?

If bloggers start caring and demanding that the blogosphere become codified with rules and regs so kids can’t jump in and start blogging, a new version of the blogosphere will emerge.

  9. swimdad says:

    Sheesh…

I wonder if that dude thanks God every day for that huge earthquake under the Indian Ocean.

    swimdad

  10. daniel says:

Was the little mouse at cheese and crackers anything before the tsunami videos? Man one little link by Drudge can sure send an ego through the roof. “little bastard” how poetic!

  11. swimdad says:

By the way… Ron Fairly had a pretty good year in ‘72.

  12. kyle says:

“In a bazaar show of rage, Jordan posted these messages on Austin’s Blog”

I can just picture it – Jordan, wearing only tattered camoflage Zubaz, runs screaming and red-faced through the open-air market, flinging artisans’ handmade crafts and crushing the farmers’ produce…

  13. It really is ironic that tsunamilaunch is now the holder of the instalanche keys.  I hope that Glenn understands that he needs to check with Jordan from now on before he links to anything.

The Blog Police they live inside of my head…

The Blog Police they come to me in my bed…

  14. Hubris says:

    Dear Austin,

You’d better save up your lunch money, because within thirty days, I will own you, you little punk.  This isn’t play time, and blogging isn’t about “sharing” and “communicating,” nancy boy.  Don’t be surprised when you see your posters and Underoos being auctioned off next month.

Now go home and cry to momma.

    Sincerely,

    The Man

  15. That was unfreakinbeliveable.

The sad thing is… I don’t even know what deep linking means.

  16. swimdad says:

I’ve got your deeplinking right here in my pants.

    swimdad

  17. shank says:

So, I guess this is the end of the 1960’s of blogging.  No more free(link)love, no more sneaking over the fence to get a peek at the big show.  Now it’s all enforcement, riot gear, and “You’ll be hearing from my laywer.”

  18. Jeff Goldstein says:

That’s “you’ll be hearing from my lawyer, you hairless punk-ass beyotch.

  19. Kathy says:

rws: deeplinking (or hotlinking) means to link directly to an image or video, bypassing the blog—and whatever the author might have said in the process.  It’s a distinct no-no, because some bloggers put up videos/images that you can’t find elsewhere and they take a serious bandwidth hit as a result when someone hotlinks them—while not receiving any credit.  For example, Wizbang put up Nick Berg’s beheading video on their server because the msm wasn’t covering it.  It was all right to link to Wizbang and show people where to find it.  It is not all right to link directly to Wizbang’s video link and not give them any credit, whilst stealing their bandwidth in the meantime.  That’s essentially what Austin did.

This is when it would be really handy for there to be a little do’s and don’t handbook for newbie bloggers.  I’m willing to cut the kid some slack here and say he probably didn’t know this was a bad thing to do.  He knows now.  And he’s not blogging anymore.  Colson and Yglesias completely overreacted and there should be an apology forthcoming from the both of them to this teenager.  If they don’t, well, they look like a pack of petty assholes who are only in blogging for their benefit, and not for anyone else’s. They had an opportunity here to take a young ‘un under their wing, to show him the ropes, and they blew it.  Big Time.

  20. PlutosDad says:

Wow I guess we are all tough guys when we hide behind computers. I wonder if people would have spoken that way in person. Ok I understand this was not a regular image but a special movie that was created by Margolis.

I wonder if Jordan and Margolis ever download mp3s? They’d better pay up if they ever did!

Picking on a kid, we are manly now.

Man, now I’m gonna have to go through all the images posted at my site and figure out where I got them from and link back, or else I’m gonna get flame mail and calls to my ISP. I don’t even know where they came from, they’re mainly from newspapers.

Oh by the way, the ACLU is investigating Biden’s wife for torture.

  21. Jeff Goldstein says:

Small correction, Kathy. It’s Matt Margolis who runs Blogs for Bush, NOT Matt Yglesias.

  22. Hubris says:

I take it none of you have read the tome Preparing for Adoloscence:  Giving the Little Bastard What For.  It’s a highly effective teaching/developmental technique.

  23. Kathy says:

    Thanks Jeff.

    Haven’t ingested enough coffee yet.

  24. In other contexts, I’ve had to handle copyright violations and deep linking bandwidth problems for clients from our younger citizens newly empowered by these technologies that they don’t always understand.  I can understand the frustration and am not quite a prepared to condemn the Blogs for Bush people in this one.

Something people often forget however is that emails always end up posted for all to see.

  25. Fred says:

Both of them are still dicks, Robin.

Small, shriveled, flaccid little dicks that deserve every ounce of vitriol they will justly receive.

Jesus, some people get mighty full of themselves just for posting on a fucking blog that a relative handful of people come by to gawk at for a few minutes and then return to their spreadsheets and TPS reports.

  26. Carrick Talmadge says:

    Jeff Goldstein writes:

Small correction, Kathy. It’s Matt Margolis who runs Blogs for Bush, NOT Matt Yglesias.

Then again, that would be a think if Yglesias started Blogging for Bush, now wouldn’t it?  I’m not even I could picture a world where that could happen.

  27. PlutosDad says:

Robin, I think we all agree that Austin needed to be corrected. It is the manner in which we disagree with them.

This was not a lawyer sending out a form letter threatening a child. This was one 19 year old kid yelling at a 13 year old kid and calling him names.

Man am I getting old? I’m only 33, but they are all young whippersnappers to me. Argh! Darn kids!

  28. Fred says:

And, oh by the way, the whole situation positively cries out for an Allah Pundit Photoshop.

In addition to the “Free Austin” tee-shirts.

As a CITIZEN FREELOADING BLOG READER, I demand that the pig-pile on B4B and the other clown continue!

  29. I do think the manner was unprofessional, I just think it was more of a case of frustration not being professionally handled than it was actual bullying.

As I said, I’ve been there before.

  30. Fred says:

    Ummmm, yeah.

The kid is 13 years old.

So, you know, I’m just not sure there is a professional way to bully a kid.

  31. MC says:

It is perhaps telling that Mr.Golson has accepted a blogad for the pro United Nations Oil For Food (Oil For Fraud) program oilforfoodfacts.org – which is sponsored by – you guessed it – the UN Foundation. Among its much drivel is the claim that the OFF program provided enough food to feed all Iraqis and hence cut children’s malnutrition in half – which is like saying “Before OFF 50,000 children died of starvation a year in Iraq – after OFF only 25,000 a year died of starvation. Aren’t we good?” – if they provided enough food for all Iraqi’s why wasn’t starvation eradicated? And if there were admittedly billions in fraud and graft doesn’t that equate to tacit support for child starvation?

It could be that his ad selection staff just missed this one. But it’s likely more like: Jordan Golson, conservative American, defending the UN kleptocracy – for money.

Oh, and here is a screen grab of his site with the ad. Yes, I copied a portion of C&C and am making it available for the public. It’s called fair use practice by a news organization, in this case to show said site’s support for the most despicable international treachery in history.

  32. Digger says:

While “hot-linking” is wrong, they went over the top. Nt only calling him a little bastard, but the item in question wasn’t a video or other costly bandwidth sucker. it was a small animated gif that was probably thrown together in 5 minutes from seperate copyright images that they didn’t own!. Then they cry and whine when someone took their image.

I’ve never linked to Cheese and Crackers and never will. I’ve also removed Blogs For Bush from my blogroll and urge all others to as well. We can surely find someone more level headed on the right to work with than someone who sends a thug blogger to do his dirty work and then hides when he’s called on it.

  33. Rob Roy Fingerhead says:

Jordan should rename his blog “Dick-cheese and Asscrack-snackers”. So as to more accurately describe the author and the scumbags he hangs with.

  34. Matt says:

Its all about cash.  Hits = ads = cash.  Instalaunch is the golden calf of bloggers and golden calf = hits = ads = cash.

As more and more, blogs are becoming a viable business, you’ll see this happened with much greater frequency, on both sides of the fence.

  35. That being said, I’ve had probably 20 Instalanches in the past year, and I have yet to see any REAL money. So it’s a bit of an overreaction …

  36. MC says:

Instalanche is nothing compared with The Corner.

  37. I sincerely apologize for the “bastard” comment. It was out of line and unnecessary. I was hot under the collar and I should have waited until I had calmed down to post on the topic.

Matt and B4B should not be dragged through the muck for that comment, that was my comment, not his.

Really, the entire issue was my doing. Matt mentioned to me that his image got instalanched at another site. I had been in contact with Austin before over other things including the Tsunami videos. I overreacted. Again, I apologize.

    -jg

  38. shank says:

    Correction MC

An Instalanche is nothing compared to a Shank-a-lanche.  Because when the 10 (million) or so people (with severe mental problems) who post on my site notice that you’ve linked to me, there will be a great migration (in the form of spam) to your own site.  You will be grateful, and the whole blogosphere will wear their ankles for earrings and await the Shank-a-lanche with lusty desire.

  39. George G. says:

I suggest you apologize to Austin and his mom, or the “Dick-cheese and Asscrack-snacker” thing will probably stick.

  40. Jordan Golson,

if, since you claimed to be doing it at the behest of B4B, an apology or “not in our name, actually” were issued from that source, it would be rather appreciated.

  41. Digger says:

While an apology is a noble thing, do realize you have already damaged this kid and taken his blog off the web with your ranting and raving and generally asinine behavior. Not only that but you have probably convinced his mother not to allow him to blog anymore because it “is too much of a hassle”. I hope you’re proud of yourself for destroying a young intellectuals hopes of being a contributing part of our community.

  42. I should resist the temptation … but I can’t.

That was big of you, Jordan.

  43. Mikey says:

I’d like to say I’m surprised, but I’ve seen too many human beings, and too many cases, to be surprised at how any tempest in a teacup gets launched.

There’s ways of dealing with this without going nuclear all over everybody.

  44. Darcyman says:

Funny thing is that I GUARANTEE neither of these thugs took the picture of the doll themselves, as it seems to be for sale only in PX shops in Kuwait.  Most likely, they lifted the copyrighted image from a web site that sells the doll.  Actually (and more ironically), they probably lifted the picture of the doll from another blogger, who originally lifted it from a copyrighted web site.  Either way, unless they took the picture of the doll themselves, they are probably just as guilty of intellectual property infringement as they accuse the 13-year-old.

Some one should demand of them to disclose where they got the (copyrighted) picture of the doll they used to superimpose over the “kidnapping” picture.  At the very least, they should remove the stolen image from their own sites.

  45. Xrlq says:

Jordan, it was very white of you to apologize for using the b-word, but it would be better still for you to apologize for sticking your nose into this issue at all.

As to Matt, Kos him.  I’m removing Blogs for Bush from my blogroll and asking him to remove me from his, as well.

  46. bbeck says:

Interesting.  I’ve heard of both B4B and Cheese but I’ve never ventured to their sites (unless I inadvertently followed a link).

Thanks to this, I won’t be adding them to my stops, either.  OTOH, if Austin starts blogging again I would likely give him and his family my support.

A sincere apology is owed to Austin and his family, and if it’s believed and accepted, then Austin should be the one posting the apology (and its acceptance) for the public to read.  As is it, Golson just sounds like he’s playing, “Hey, I apologized so look at me, I’m not a jerk!” by posting something publically himself.

Good grief, bullies make me ill.

    Later,

    bbeck

  47. TomB says:

I sincerely apologize for the “bastard” comment. It was out of line and unnecessary. I was hot under the collar and I should have waited until I had calmed down to post on the topic.

It seems to me you didn’t just make one rash comment, but that this went on for a while. And it isn’t just the “bastard” comment.

Geez, how long does it take for you to calm down?

You make Allah look laid-back. (no offense Allah)

  48. TomB says:

Oh, and Jordan, your “apology” might mean more if it wasn’t cut-and-pasted on almost every website covering this.

I mean, just a little sincerity?

  49. Matt Moore says:

If the deeplinking was the issue there are some technical fixes that don’t involve calling children bastards. You can easily make the deep link either resolve to your entry, to some other image making fun of the deep linker, or just send back an error.

  50. SPQR says:

So who is going to sell Golson a cross and some nails?  Assuming that is enough redemption for his sins.

  51. Blackjack says:

You’ll never catch me picking on a 13 year old.

10 year olds?  I’ll kick their asses.  No particular reason…10 year olds are just wrong.

Seriously, this whole thing is messed up.  Austin seems like a decent kid.  As for Margolis, karma will bite him soon enough.  In less than 4 years, he’ll have to become a porn site for his title to have any relevance.

  52. Kathy, thanks for the explanation. That is the first thing I have learned here that wasn’t dirty…wink

  53. ap0c says:

Wasn’t MM roughed up by some union thugs in Boston? Maybe this is like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder related.  Dude, just kick the dog.  It’ll still love you.

  54. RussfromWinterset says:

I’ve got just one question:  Who the f%&k are Matt and Jordan?  It appears that SOMEONE has a bad case of “McDonald’s/Madonna” syndrome.  Sending a thug to threaten a teenager for duping an image from your blog is strictly bush league.  As far as I’m concerned, these two are now tied for the title of “The Ed Rooney of the Blogosphere”.

  55. RussfromWinterset says:

I mean, come on!  You run a freakin’ blog.  You’re seven steps above the MSM in terms of karma, but geez, it’s not as if you’re manufacturing polio vaccine or editing porn movies or even gluing eyes onto pet rocks.  Stop acting like Apple or Microsoft and realize that you put your opinions on a freakin web log for the amusement of others.  “Dickcheese and Asscrack-snackers” LMAO.  (Jeff, that’s #2)

  56. RussfromWinterset says:

BTW – for the non-South Park Republicans, Ed Rooney was the assistant principal’s name in “Ferris Bueller”.  (Jeff, that’s #3)

  57. RussfromWinterset says:

I don’t know why I felt like I had to explain that one.  Sometimes my witty Dennis Miller-ripoff pop culture references get nothing but blank stares.  Sort of like trying to explain the difference between fuel injection and natural aspiration with carburetors to your three-year old.  (Jeff, #4)

  58. RussfromWinterset says:

Great, now I’m going to get a nasty email from Dennis Miller blaming me for the low ratings for his show on MSNBC and calling me a “little bastard”.  (Jeff, #5)

  59. RussfromWinterset says:

Dennis, I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to say that your show sucks, I really enjoy it.  It’s just that you’re on MSNBC for kressakes.  Local access cable shows have bigger ratings than anything on MSNBC.  (Jeff, #6)

  60. RussfromWinterset says:

Not that there’s anything wrong with local access cable shows either.  It’s just that after “Wayne’s World 2” the bloom came off the rose for those guys really fast.  (Jeff, #7)

  61. RussfromWinterset says:

Speaking of Wayne’s World 2, I’m shocked that the “stretch Pacer” phenomena never caught on.  I’d love to see a stretched Pacer or Matador with spinners, a hydraulic lift kit, and tons of bling.  That would be wack, as the kids say.  (Jeff, #8)

  62. RussfromWinterset says:

Anyway, to get back to my original topic.  Bullying kids for not knowing all the ins and outs of blog etiquitte should make you the target of mucho ridicule.  There, that’s nine comments, Jeff.  Do I get a prize?

  63. Drumwaster says:

    Number ten.

    I want one, too!

And assaulting someone all over the web and then apologizing for that assault in the comments of other blogs is like punching someone IRL, and then posting your apology at a bulletin board in a grocery store near his home.

Apologize to Austin and his family, not to us. If he thinks it is sincere, he will let you know. But doing it as a cut-n-paste is just trying to assuage your conscience. (Not that you had one on this issue in the first goddam place, but still…)

In the meantime, there’s this eight-year-old down the street that has been pissing me off… Who’s with me?!?

  64. Blackjack says:

    Drumwaster,

Sorry bro, can’t help you.  If he was 10, I’d have your back.  But, I have no beef with 8 year olds.

  65. Baby Xrlq says:

I’ll take him on.  I may be only four months old, but I can kick an eight year old’s ass.

  66. Joel Mackey says:

umm, If Bush came out with an anti-Bush agenda and his rhetoric was all anti-Bush. I think Matt Yglesia would support him.

such as “ I am George Bush and I approve this message”, “Bushitler is trying to expand US hegemony , his primary goal is to control all oil and infect all minorities with HIV……”

at this point he will become the Democratic nominee, which will then throw all Democrats into a reciprocating feedback loop which will cause them to spontaneously combust… “Vote Bush because he is most anti-Bush, ick!” PoP, Boom!!!

Which was Karl Rove’s strategy from the get go.
