Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez is allegedly funding his own church with that CITGO money.  The newly-forming Reform Catholic Venezuelan Church puts its emphasis on reform:
For example, reformists consider that ”homosexuality and bisexuality are not sins in and of themselves.” Divorce is allowed and priests do not take vows of chastity.

”We completely support the socialist project led by Chávez,” said Enrique Albornoz, one of the new church’s first bishops — a group that is to be ordained on Sunday.

A former Roman Catholic priest, Jon Jen Siu Garcia, was elected coadjutor, and noted to the Venezuelan press that his mission is to “liberate people from capitalist values.”
”We are learning to see the lower classes like Hugo Chávez, who has cared to attend to their necessities,” said Leonardo Marin Saavedra, bishop of the Anglican Latin American Church. A resident of Canada, he was invited to Venezuela especially to attend the upcoming ceremonies. “We are struggling against exploitation and the empire of the United States.”
Hey, where does Andrew Sullivan sign up? Oh sure, the socialism should make Sully twinge in theory, but he’s a full-throated backer of Barack Obama, who spent 20 years in a church based on Black Liberation Theology. Theoleftists seem not to bother him in the slightest, and he’s already protesting against the American non-empire. It’s a slippery slope, so why not get out your boogie board?
Karl, you are endlessly trying to stick wright onto O!
show me the evidence.
where is something O! wrote or said about BLT?
all you have is church attendence and one batshit crazy old preacher man.
Nishi, can you please refrain from going OT on the fucking FIRST comment? I know it’s hard. You are batshit crazy regarding O and his preacher, and no one (here) is EVER going to go along with your Wright and Obama have no connection BSh.
Now – back to the post – HA HA HAAA HAAA HAAA. That is the funniest thing I’ve read all day. LIberate people from Capitalist values … what a hoot!
I want that fool — who doesn’t care about O! backing faith-based initiatives one thread over to show me the speeches and writings where Sen. Larry Craig extolled the virtues of cruising the mens’ room at the Mpls airport, and Sen. Vitter championed the cause of prostitution. When Bill Clinton got caught using an intern as a fleshy recpticle, he stonewalled it until the DNA tests came in. Politicians someplace they shouldn’t be do not publicize it, and deny it when caught. It’s what they do.
Better yet, that fool can skip it, having revealed her rampant hypocrisy over in the next thread.
That’s too funny.

They are not stuck together, they are stapled to each other. Baracky actively chose Wright, studied him, looked to him for spiritual and political guidance. Baracky says so. He also knew he would have to distance himself from Wright, and they discussed it before the campaign ever got underway. 20 years attending that Church, married there, kids baptized there. All thrown under the bus, but does not change the fact that was his political and spiritual home.
I wonder if nishi realizes that she lost the Wright has nothing to do with Obama argument.
As to the topic, one way for Chavez to keep power in Venezuala for the long term would be to create a new position which doesn’t require the need to be re-elected and yet still has the power he desires. Pope might just do it.
And the artful book title Wright could pen for Chávez?
“The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Disconnecting the American Dream”
(Hey, that works for Obama, too…)
The queer thing is that Chavez should believe that assaulting and insulting the church and churchgoers of the vast majority of Venezuela’s people is going to do his ‘revolution’ any good in the long run. As the article points out, even Fidel didn’t make that error. What drives such stupidity?
7 + 8 = The Audacity of Pope
What drives such stupidity?
Arrogance and a military to back it up!
He’s a True Believer in his ability to reorganize society the way he wants. His new “church” is a bunch of Catholic heretics and heretic-wannabes who realized Pope Benedict isn’t going to let them putting Catholic lipstick on their Marxist pig. So they’ve got a new Papa — and this one not only has an army, but bands of thugs and buckets of oil money.
It’s a classic win-win for the criminals like Hugo and the heretics — they get government money and force backing them up, and he gets a veneer of religious respectability. The losers are the people, particularly the people who won’t go along with his schism.
I have to ask, though — how long until a celebrity announces their conversion to this “Reform Catholic Venezuelan Church”? How long until Hugo slips Pfleger enough cash to get him to formally leave the Catholic church and start the American branch?
Dollars to doughnuts Chavez is dead within five years.
Hey, isn’t this how the Angelican Church started? We are witnesing history.

There’s plenty of evidence. You just choose to ignore it. Which makes you a very shitty candidate for being a scientist.

My inner dialogue is having fun with some of those quotes.
â€ÂHomosexuality and bisexuality are not sins in and of themselves.†Great. I’m with that, glad to hear it.
â€ÂWe completely support the socialist project led by Chávez.†Wait, what? Er, good luck with that? I guess?
â€ÂLiberate people from capitalist values.†D’oh!
â€ÂWe are struggling against exploitation and the empire of the United States.†MAN OVERBOARD!!!
Call me parochial, but (1) truly liberated people will eventually come around to capitalist values all by themselves, (2) ‘struggling against exploitation’ is good, but equating exploitation with the United States is foolish, and (3) I frankly regard American hegemony (’empire of the United States’) as a positive.
