Bert Lahr: McCain Too Old To Be Pres [Dan Collins]

Unfortunately, senility seems no impediment to serving in Congress.

Democratic Rep. John Murtha said Wednesday that Republican Sen. John McCain is too old to be president.

Murtha is 75, four years older than McCain. He says they are nearly the same age, and the rigors and stress of running the country is too much for guys their age.

“I’ve served with seven presidents,” Murtha told a union audience. “When they come in, they all make mistakes. They all get older.”

“This one guy running is about as old as me,” he said, drawing laughter and applause. “Let me tell you something, it’s no old man’s job.”

“And check out this Pope guy.  He’s not exactly a spring chicken.”

  1. Kieth says:

Sad to say but Murtha’s right. It’s a killer job.

  2. alppuccino says:

So Murtha will no longer seek re-election?

  3. N. O'Brain says:

    John Murtha is an ex-Marine.

  4. Pablo says:

Again, the Veep pick will be critical. What the job does to McCain is of far less importance than what McCain does with the job. And Murtha was an imbecile before he was ancient, so his opinion of of little consequence, except among fellow imbeciles who wouldn’t be voting R anyway.

i thot u guyz liked Thomas Sowell?

  6. Dan Collins says:

Does that mean that I have to agree with him about everything, nishi?

There’s also the rich, rich irony of the message bearer.

  7. Patrick Chester says:

“Like” != “blindly follow anything one says” turtle-boy.

Perhaps that explains the confusing actions of folks like you, who find some quote from some icky-awful right-winger to fling about.

  8. Dan Collins says:

Reminds me, Patrick, of the person who came by to lambaste me about enjoying a They Might Be Giants concert, because they’re “big libs”. So?

Remember, Nishi, there are TWO shift keys.

    And a U and a G and even and H key. And S. Can’t forget S.

  10. Pablo says:

McCain’s age does not weigh in his favor. The fact that he’s not Clinton or Obama or a lawyer does. Tell me, who is Sowell voting for?

  11. Mikey NTH says:

Politics is everything, Dan. When you understand that, when you make that your lodestone, everything flows easily. By announcing that you are politically in opposition to someone you are then relieved from having any empathy for that person or any admiration for them in any other field.

Example: Miss Cleo hates the Pope, so the political hatred she has for the man now allows her not to have any empathy for what a boy went through well over sixty years ago.

You do see the savings in thinking and the streamlining of your processes that this entails?

  12. Mikey NTH says:

    N. O’Brain: She slipped up earlier and wrote in English. Matoko was warned by me about that and has fallen back to her toddler-speak.

  13. Ardsgaine says:

Well, I agree with Sowell. McCain should not have been the Republican candidate. That’s why I voted for Rudy. Looking at my choices now, though, McCain doesn’t look so bad.

  14. Ardsgaine says:

Since you’re a Sowell fan, gamera, you’ll surely want to read this.

  15. MayBee says:

It isn’t an old man’s job, but perhaps if we were more reasonable about it, it wouldn’t be as aging.
Remember all the headlines and complaints about how many ‘vacation’ days Bush took? Remember all the complaining about letting Cheney actually do something besides occupy an office? We want too much of these guys.

Tony Blair could still vacation in the Caribbean during his tenure, and the British press wouldn’t even write about where he was staying. Sarkozy could boat around Wisconsin. But not the US President. He has to be on display and hard at work every day for 8 years. How exhausting.

Is that a good environment for Obama’s little girls?

  16. Pablo says:

Oh, look! The kossacks think you’re an asshole too. How unitey.

Of course not. You wouldn’t want to have to think about the Obamessiah’s underlying beliefs. That would mess with the whole “Hopey & Changey” wave that you’re all riding. Surf’s up, Dude!

  34. Ardsgaine says:

Wright is to O as Hagee is to McCain.

No. Obama was an active member of Wright’s church. He aligned himself with that ideology. Even if I could bring myself to believe that he never had an ounce of sympathy for it, it does not speak well for his character that he was willing to use it, nor for his ability to stand up to the Muslim fanatics that he will have to face as president.

McCain never sought Hagee’s endorsement, and did not spend twenty years sitting in the pews of Hagee’s church–or even the church of a Hageesque preacher.

the 20 years of church means nothing to me.

I find that rather dense. Regardless of what you think, though, there are plenty of people who recognize that Obama either sat there because he agreed, or because he is an opportunist who is not above using black anger against whites to gain power.

and i wager to other people in my demographic.

Which demographic is that? Clueless children?

    its like Che!

Okay. Could you be sure to make that point to as many people as you meet?

to me, hes a cool t-shirt.

Would you wear a t-shirt with a cool picture of Hitler on it too then? If not, can you explain to me the thought process by which you recognize that Hitler is evil, but idolize Che as a cultural icon?

  52. Matt, Esq. says:

I was concerned about McCain’s age when dealing with the primary. I would have preferred a younger man. However, he is is the nominee. I agree with Pablo- McCain’s choice as veep is going to be significant- however, I’m not sure McCain is even going to want the job for an additional four years. Getting his “turn” as president during one term may be e nough. Also, obviously his mother is still kicking and she’s in her late 90’s so that’s probably a positive about longevity.

What I find interesting is the contrast between Republicans handling their nominee and the dems handling theirs. Certainly, there was bitching here and elsewhere about McCain – I certainly think he’s got a pretty big downside myself- but most of the republicans seem to be rallying around him to some extent and he’s not even being attacked yet. In contrast, no matter who gets the nominee on the democratic side, there’s going to be riots- where the riots occur and what their demographic makeup is, will be the big question.

One of these days, I’ll figure out the quote function…

Nishi, and I hope you don’t mind me be being informal here; I’ve seen you make that claim on more than one occasion. What I haven’t seen, is anything more than that. Aside from complaining that your sect has no influence in government because there is no one of your sect in government, most of your time has been spent deriding religious notions and concepts in favor of a value system based solely on science. Almost, one might say, worshiping at the altar of science and science with no philosophy is a way to a very bad end.

Or is it abolishing all other religions. Either way, I think you’d be a lot happier, really.

    Nishidiot.

And keep in mind, the Religion of Peace is very, very essentially anti-Reason. It’s essential dogma that Allah is not bound by Reason or Consistency; if science works, it’s because He has not changed His mind.

That nishidiot subscribes to this faith (or, rather, claims to) while also claiming to value science uber alles should clue you into the fact that she understands neither her faith nor her science.
