Rick Ellensburg has a new hobby horse — trying to convince people that Barack Obama is getting unfair treatment in the media, particularly regarding Obama’s relationship with his former donor and neighbor Tony Rezko, currently on trial for influence peddling. Wednesday’s gambit was to compare the Rezko relationship to the Whitewater scandal:
Throughout the 1990s, the word “Whitewater” was the weapon used continuously by the Limbaugh Right and the establishment press to cast innuendo on the Clintons’ financial lives. The word was just tossed around as slippery shorthand for corrupt dealings. It never had any substance. No specific allegations of wrongdoing were ever made about the original “Whitewater” transactions by those throwing the term around. And after $73 million was spent on an endless investigation, no wrongdoing on the part of the Clintons was found.
As is so often the case, the link reveals Ellensburg’s intellectual dishonesty.  The link is to a piece by Joe Conason complaining that the final Whitewater report from Independent Counsel Robert Ray did not contain a statement exonerating the Clintons, though exonerating people was not the job of the Independent Counsel (or any prosecutor).   Ray applied a proper standard in reporting that there was “insufficient available evidence to establish beyond a reasonable doubt” at trial that the Clintons committed a crime. Conason — for whatever reason — proceeded from a false premise as to the function of a prosecutor. Ellensburg, on the other hand, has a law degree and surely knows better — yet chooses to perpetuate the falsehood.
Once the falsehood is stripped away, Ellensburg’s position on the Obama-Rezko relationship is made clear. In his opinion, the relationship matters only if the currently available evidence would be sufficient to convict Obama of a crime.
Accordingly, Ellensburg spews junk like this:
Having paid only casual attention to it in the past, I spent several hours yesterday morning reading every “Rezko” article I could find in an attempt to understand as much as possible about the allegations. The point isn’t that there is no credible evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of Obama, although that’s unquestionably true. It’s far beyond that. There aren’t even any theoretical allegations or suggestions as to what he might have done wrong at all.
Really? Stories reported in the Chicago Sun-Times suggest that Obama may have looked the other way — and wrote letters supporting more Rezko projects — as eleven Rezko buildings turned into slums in his state Senate district. That may or may not be a crime, but the many African-American families who lived in Rezko buildings riddled with problems  including squalid living conditions, vacant apartments, lack of heat, squatters and drug dealers — might have a different opinion than Ellensburg as to whether Obama may have been involved in “wrongdoing.”
There is also the possibility that Obama may have asked the State Department to get an Iraqi felon a visa to the US at Rezko’s request — and that money from said felon may have ended up financing that now infamous Obama-Rezko real estate deal. So when it comes to theoretical allegations or suggestions, Ellensburg does not appear to have looked much harder than Obama did when entering into a deal with someone who was documented in the media as under investigation by local officials and the FBI. At least the Clintons got involved in Whitewater before their partners came under investigation.
Again, such theoretical allegations or suggestions are not probable cause to believe Obama committed a crime. But Ellensburg’s argument boils down to the claim that voters should not care about wrongdoing less than a crime — that voters should not care about ethics, or whether Obama’s public image as a reformer and champion of the poor squares with his record. Indeed, Ellensburg argues that it is unfair of the press to even ask questions about it.
Update: Good Morning:
Did Barack Obama use indicted campaign fund-raiser Tony Rezko as a conduit to get jobs for people in Gov. Blagojevich’s administration?
The question arises from a list of 39 people Rezko’s lawyers said in a court filing he urged Blagojevich to give state jobs.
Nothing to ask about here. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for. Move along.
Oh thanks for that caveat. I was thinking to myself what a turd you were for posting such meatless slime until that caveat. Now I get it. It’s smart to discuss Obama’s ties to alleged felonious martian land deals, as long as we remind ourselves that the allegations of Obama’s opium grow houses and extra-terrestrial affairs with transgendered hookers from Venus are just allegations!
You’re making my eyes roll, Karl.
Excellent post, Karl. But I think that you should have referred to him as Ellison throughout this one.
“Ray applied a proper standard in reporting that there was â€Âinsufficient available evidence to establish beyond a reasonable doubt†at trial that the Clintons committed a crime.”
He didn’t vindicate the Clintons because from this statement it looks like he thought they were guilty, just too eel slippery to be caught up in the nets of justice.
Again.
Doesn’t Obama’s association with Rezco taint just about everything he claims to stand for? He acts all hope and changiness, when in reality he’s same ole, same ole.
is there bad blood between you and GG, Karl?
I think GG was correct pointing out the fact-less yet accusations .
Bring the facts, then the smears or righteous indignation may start.
Isn’t that the same rage you and me felt when baseless stories in NYT about McCain were published?
You and I.
But even so, sashal, you don’t mean to say that Obama accepting help from a Chicago political fixer who was already under Federal investigation for non-disclosure of . . . erm . . . interesting financial relations with a convicted felon with eyebrow-raising international ties is not worth investigating, do you?
In other words, is Iraq Vietnam, after all?
we don’t know that yet, Dan. So far it is just assumptions and gossip.
Our MSM does not bother me as much as liberal or conservative, left or right, but gossip mongering tabloid fame striving pieces of unreadable garbage.
Insert Bush, Cheney, Rove or Rumsfeld. Silly Gleens.
Re: Dan @ #2, Wilson isn’t getting nearly enough play these days.
No, that’s an established fact, sashal. The questionable deal on the Obama house, the attached lot and the involvement of Rezco’s wife happened while Rezco was under investigation and facing lawsuits. We know that.
[…] x3 at 5:47 a.m. PST, March 6, via “Rick Ellensburg has no ethical standard for Obama [Karl]“: Stories reported in the Chicago Sun-Times suggest that Obama may have looked the other way […]
Or, you could search through this, if you liked.
Rick Ellersburg, Socky McSockerson, and the gleenwaldian sock puppeteers are the biggest group of mendoucheous asshats on the innertubes. That he would lie, is no surprise. That he would completely mischaracterize a link is no surprise. That he would have a double standard, or absolutely no standards, is no surprise.
Sashal: If this is all smoke and mirrors, why did Obama state that his involvement was a “boneheaded mistake?” Also, why did he get so pissy about the questions at a recent news conference? The McCain smear was criticised by one of the NYT’s own editors. McCain still answered over 30 questions with the temperment of one who knows the insinuations were bogus.
Heck, we didn’t even get that much from the Clintons about Whitewater. But that’s OK, because that secret indictment of Karl Rove for the Plame affair is going to be opened any day now.
You know … goose, gander …
Ok, a couple of days ago I’m voting for Hillary and today we’ve got mutual linky love between PW and Scary Larry Johnson. This race frightens me.
You may be right in some rarefied theoretical world, sashal.
In the real world we inhabit, the one where c is the speed limit and things fall down, Democrats have now spent eight years flinging every gobbet of mud they could dredge up in the hope that something would stick, from Cheney’s deferred compensation through the whole yellowcake/outing mess to the FISA scandal. They have achieved one (1) conviction, that being for lying to the investigators about something peripheral to the main accusations. Ninety percent or better of their charges have been about things that wouldn’t result in criminal charges if proven. When pressed about it they draw themselves up with wide-eyed expressions of innocence and intone, “But we don’t know. What’s wrong with finding out the truth?”
Now they find themselves getting the same treatment, and TEH OUTRAGE is palpable. Gleen(s) and the Kos Kidz positively vibrate with indignation. The bully has made his victim’s life miserable with “wedgies” and taunting; the victim attempts to resist, manages to land a blow, and the bully runs to the teacher crying “It’s not fair! He hit me!” F*im.
Understand, I don’t think Karl’s approach is the right one. If a person had the time and fast enough Internet access, the right thing to do would be to go back through Ellersbee’s spews and collect the disingenuous “we need to know“s — then, when something like this comes up, quote the asshole’s own words back at him with the proper nouns changed as appropriate. With a link to the original.
Politics is commutative and transitive. Attempts to establish that all behavior of Democrats is virtuous because it is the behavior of Democrats, and all behavior of Republicans is vile because it is the behavior of Republicans, are bullshit upon their face and need to be flung back at them con brio.
Regards,
Ric
You could have shortened that title to “Rick Ellensburg has no ethical standards”
well , may be somebody can explain that to me.
What was questionable about that deal?
Even if Rezko is the crook .
Did Obama pay for the house with dollars and did he get it with the suspicious discount?
And if he got the great deal, which nobody else could get, did Obama return the favor?
I’d say, if there is a suspicion, let them including the press investigate and publish then the results of investigation, like with Watergate, but throwing unproven mud and hints out there is unjustifiable imho…
Not saying Obama is an angel or whatever, and quite likely he knows more then he is willing to tell us, but….
Ric, Let’s face it: When you trumpet an ideology that has polished its narrative upon the foundation of identity politics and eternal victimization, the reaction is inevitable. How else can they respond and still pay due homage to The Narrative™?
Karl,
Can you please explain to me why you (and I think others who post here) keep referring to Glenn Greenwald as “Rick Ellensburg”?
This is a sincere question. I’ve been noticing it for some time, and I am utterly mystified by it.
sashal: This question got by you as evidenced by your response. Why would Obama call his involvement with Rezko in the house buying deal a “boneheaded mistake?”
Yeah. Obama got the house at 300k below asking, whereas Mrs. Rezko paid full asking price for the adjacent lot, despite not having any income with which to do so. I mean, did you read it at all?
Why the Rezkos wanted the adjacent lot, when they were over their heads in debt, is an interesting question. The Obamas paid to have it maintained. Maybe they were afraid that a Republican might purchase the land and build something that detracted from the ante-Bellumism of their faux Georgian manse?
thanks, BJT and Dan.
Now it is a little clearer where all this coming from
Kathy: Start here and also here
Your welcome.
Kathy, Greenwald did it first. See here.
Kathy – A bit ago, it was determined that Senor Gleenwald was going around, posting under pseudonyms, trumpeting his own brilliance. Did you know that his writing has been read into the Senate record? Rick was but one of many aliases that he chose to use, and then had the audacity to claim that it could have been one of his Brazilian cabana boys defending him against unjustified and unwarranted attacks. If you want a complete accounting, search Patterico and Wuzzadem in re. sockpuppets.
I got my house for $400,000 below the asking price, but it had gone into foreclosure, and had sat vacant for 3 years prior to the purchase, and Wells Fargo was starting to dump property at the beginning the of downturn in the market. There is no indication that Obama’s McMansion was in any way similarly situated.
Commutative? What are you, a Marxist Literary Theorist? Politics is about Changeroos! And Changeroos can only be changed with Hopericity! You can’t Healify a nation without we canniness. There’s nothing false about false hopefiers. Simplify to the extreme by combining those three magic words into one, YesWEcan, else2 you’ll suffer from the diabolical lesswecaneristics of a Billhilly hope snatcher.
The next great chapter in the American story begins with with three great words, Yes We Can!
thor, sashal,
To the other responses about the real estate deal, I would merely add that it is a fact (not a theory or suggestion) that Obama did nothing – and wrote letters supporting more Rezko projects  as eleven Rezko buildings turned into slums in his state Senate district. That is — at the very least — contrary to the image Obama presents to people outside Illinois. It is standard fare in politics for someone to point out that candidate X got money from donor Y, then X acted (or backed off) in some way benefitting Y. Greenwald’s own article ticks off examples of this — Bush & Enron, McCain & Keating, etc. He just seems to think Obama should be immune from it.
The Yesuicans were a tribe of peyote-worshipping Native Americans who became totally bummed and disappeared after being driven off their land by the Hopeys in the early 16th century.
Letters, Karl, as in plural? Your hope-snatchifides are showing. Twas one letter, I thinks, and it was to encourage the funding of a low-income home for the aged, if I recall.
Now, I don’t what you expect your state senator to do in your district, but Obama feels it’s apporpriate to help the elderly, the orphaned, the needy, in the district he once represented, because he’s not evil, like you, you jack-booted hope stomper!
Obama has clean undies! Leave him alone. You’re lucky he even performs for you people.
“Stories reported in the Chicago Sun-Times suggest that Obama may have looked the other way – and wrote letters supporting more Rezko projects”
Really? Obama ‘may’ have looked the other way. That $1000 donation sure sounds suspicious, doesn’t it?
And those letters……Written only NINE years ago.
In addition…”There is also the possibility that Obama may have asked the State Department to get an Iraqi felon a visa to the US at Rezko’s request”
Them thar possibilities are intriguing, aren’t they?
Patterico is right. You sure took Ellensburg down. Obama, just might be a crook.
Maybe, or maybe not yet, but even if he only violated Senate ethics rules Rezko would have a hold over him when he needed a favor down the road…like pressure on a prosecutor to go easy… or a pardon. In any event, don’t you think the voters should know before the election?

The APPEARANCE if Impropriety, seman, the APPEARANCE!
And yet, semanticlueless, you missed the Obama statement as to his BONEHEADED MISTAKE!
But you just keep riffing on The Narrative™ and hoping that McCain will be indicted for some Keating related thing.
Obama’s a Chicago politician. You begin with the assumption they’re crooked, and work from there.
Who paid for these canards, that’s the question.
Once again, it’s highly gratifying to expound a thesis, then have people come along and supply anecdotal evidence for it. Thank you, Semanticleo (and thor, to a somewhat lesser extent).
Summary: There is an appearance of impropriety. There is no hard evidence that anything bad actually happened. Therefore it is racist, fascist, immoral, and fattening to search for any evidence, or to bring up anything that might be evidential in nature, right?
Now apply that standard to, oh, (picking something at random) the “Bush AWOL” story. TEH PUBLIC HS TEH RGHT 2 KNO!!!!!1111!!!

“The APPEARANCE if Impropriety, seman, the APPEARANCE!”
If he’s guilty, I have some advice for Obama.
1. Just look at the camera with cow-eyes and invoke 9/11.
2. Stack your Admin with hacks who will carry your water, no matter how radioactive.
3. Make it BIG. Never steal anything small. The small-timers are the ones who do the BIG time.
Sorry.
Just havin’ some fun with the moral outrage.
Because of TEH HYPOCRISY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Summary: There is an appearance of impropriety. There is no hard evidence that anything bad actually happened. Therefore it is racist, fascist, immoral, and fattening to search for any evidence, or to bring up anything that might be evidential in nature, right?
Not to mention, if Obama isn’t elected, women and minorities will be hardest hit.
Have a shovel, semanticleo. That one’s starting to be a bit worn.
Regards,
Ric
Now you’re implying I’m somewhat less anecdotal than Cleo. Just what sort’a anecdotal bigot are you?
If you like Dan Rathering Obama, go ahead, but all these Obamuendos look like one-handed self-gratifying acts if you ask me. I opt not to sit in your circle and partake.
Unless Liz Stephans sits to my left.
and … Micheal Vick sits to your right.
Manlove – It’s the other white meat …um … dark meat … um … RACIST!
SI, SE PUEDE !
Racists.
and … Brett Favre sits in your lap.
Maybe that’s where the bodies actually are buried.
Ellensburg conducted a reader survey and determined that his audience has the average intelligence level of third graders and cannot distinguish fact from fiction. He has based his columns on that survey because he can just make shit up and his readers won’t challenge him on it because they believe it’s the truth. They also don’t click on his links, which oftentimes don’t say what he claims they say, because they have no reason to dispute what he says. As people of limited intellectual capacity, his readers just WANT TO BELIEVE.
His dishonest post on Obama noted here is just another example of this phenomenon. The suggestion of reviewing his posts for examples of “the people must know” demands for republicans versus democrats is excellent and I have no doubt would result in the finding of an incredible double standard.
He has worked hard to earn and maintain the sobriquet of the “internet’s most dishonest blogger.”
::shrug::
If “Rathering” Bush is a valid tactic, it’s also valid for anybody else — including Obama. Politics is commutative. And if semanticleo can make cow-eyes and proclaim virtuously, “But all we want is the truth! The People deserve the truth!” then that principle applies for all politicians for all time.
It goes back to a previous hobbyhorse of mine: Democrats don’t “vet” their candidates. They select their nominees on the basis of Hope! Change! Plans!, surface appearances, and membership in the proper groups, without even inquiring as to what went on previously except to the extent that it supports Teh Narrative™ The practice frequently leads to absurdity. My favorite example: at one point in his military career, John Kerry abandoned his command to the care of a junior enlisted man and went bounding through the jungle with a bandolier over his shoulder chasing Cong. The event isn’t questionable — he brags about it, loudly, whenever it can be inserted into the conversation — so people who’d spent thirty years using “Rambo!” as an insulting epithet were obliged to cite it admiringly as the behavior of a War Hero.
This is a similar case. A Chicago Machine politician is suspected to have engaged in ethically questionable behavior. Well, duh. Fish have been wet in the past. But the Democrats are absolutely gobsmacked that anything like that could possibly have happened, and their immediate reaction is a full-court press against anyone bringing up the question because they didn’t check beforehand and allow for it.
Regards,
Ric
cleo, thor:
I’m not saying Obama is a crook. I’m saying he’s a typical Chicago politician, as opposed to the Messianic totem of reform and champion of the poor he claims to be.
Before this cycle is over, the MSM will do stories about McCain and lobbyists also, for much the same reason (the NYT already tried to pretend its sex story was in this genre). The notion that Greenwald (or either of you, apparently) are going to mau mau the media into doing otherwise is a joke. So Obama is going to get this type of coverage.
And cleo — it’s not 1K. It’s at least the 160K Obama hs donated to charity. But Obama has yet to give the press a full accounting of Rezko-related donations.
Cleo at #38 demonstrates the flawed thinking that has driven the Democrats mad for the past eight years. Start with the premise that, say George Bush, is guilty of something. He’s George Bush – that alone tells us he’s guilty. That’s the flaw and you think that sort of thinking alone would be bad enough, but it gets better.
Search diligently for that something. Find nothing. Do not conclude that maybe there is nothing – conclude that George Bush has surrounded himself with criminal masterminds who have managed to hide the evidence of the crime from your search.
Search even more diligently while speculating on the scope of the nefarious activities George Bush is guilty of, and they have to be ultra-nefarious because he and his handlers have spent so much obvious time and energy hiding all traces of the crimes. Again find nothing.
Begin cries for George Bush’s impeachment and then trial in the World Court, and then maybe shot into the sun as punishment. It must be impeachable because he has hidden his crimes so well that they can’t be found, and that is a mockery of the law George Bush was supposed to uphold.
All beginning from the single flawed premise that George Bush, by merely being George Bush, is guilty. And the same flawed thinking is now being deployed with relation to Senator Obama – because he is Senator Obama he can’t be guilty. Since he can’t be guilty why bother investigating, and if you are investigating you are (insert PC identity politics accusation here).
This would be more entertaining if it weren’t all so depressing.
cleo, thor
here’s a little homework for you … call up the mortgage broker of your choice and ask them how much downpayment to value is needed to secure a mortgage on an empty lot.
Then tell me how fresh smelling it was that Rezko’s wife, with almost no cash of her own, was able to secure a $500,000 mortgage for a $625,000 empty lot at a time Tony was $10 mil in debt with hungry creditors in pursuit. A lot, btw, that had no access to the public street except through the Obama property.
Yes, nothing to see here, move along.
Ah man don’t you know that…
There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known.
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.
It’s easy.
All you need is hope, all you need is hope,
All you need is hope, hope, hope is all you need.
All you need is hope (all together now)
All you need is hope (everybody)
All you need is hope, hope, hope is all you need.
Just changey one word, instant theme song.
Cleo does usually make cow eyes for cow pies. I’ll give you that. I’m not into Rathering just because Bush was Rathered, plus I like to get Karl stirred up.
thor,
I get your provocation. But Rathering is making crap up. Obama’s HYPOCRISY!!! is not made up.
To make the point from a different angle — the fact that hypocrisy is all that is clearly established so far is what makes Greenwald’s hysteria all the more laughable. He cannot bear that the media point out that Obama is… a politician… who got a little too cozy with a scuzzy character.
“So Obama is going to get this type of coverage.”
OK. So long as you recognize the quality of the poo.
But I must say I am shocked to know you think the glass (“as opposed to the Messianic totem of reform and champion of the poor he claims to be.’) is half-empty. I thought that was beneath the ‘Classic Liberal’.
Are you saying politicians (When they aren’t kissin’ babies, they’re stealin’ their candy) have to be pristine, in order to have your blessing?
thor,
re your response to Darleen — those questions are coming up in the civil litigation against Rezko. Which you would know if you bothered to read the NYT link in the original post.
It’s pretty easy to dismiss an issue if you go out of your way to remain ignorant.
I seriously doubt semanticleo needs to give Barry O pointers on how to get around an inconvenient past association. He seems to have it down pretty well.
Of course, in my own opinion, Barry’s a lying sack of crooked Chicago shit.
Allegedly.
Karl and all: One should be aware of the potential for thor and teh parody before one gets their knickers in a bunch over what he writes. cleo? Have at her!
Ref: Vick, Michael :-)
Not at all. I’m saying Greenwald is a jackass for suggesting that the media not point out that Obama is as non-pristine as McCain or any other pol at that level.
BJ,
I fully recognize that thor is trying to pull my chain on this. The only part of it I mind is his suggestion that things are being invented about Obama a la Rathergate.
All we want is for the truth to come out, semanticleo. How could anybody object to the truth coming out? It is, after all, the truth.
And you, personally, are singularly ill-situated to object to the truth coming out.
Regards,
Ric
Karl, if I’m going out of my way to remain ignorant of a if’a-u-connect-these-tings article in the NYT then my day is moving along as planned.
Anyway, Karl, it’s your job to agent provocateur and my job to be your waning nemesis and Obama’s job to be the one-love jah-rules Messiah of generation lunar. So, like, what’s the problem?
BJ, MV is my MJ.
BTW, I have already pointed out at least one instance of McCain not living up to his reformer image in this campaign.
I’m saying Gleenwald is a jackass will suffice, Karl. If you feel compelled to expand on that thought, let me provide you with some excellent descriptors :
Mendoucheous
Douchenozzle
Beaker
Lying fatherfucker
faggotEl Jefe Mentirosa
Fairy Tale Time!
Today’s Story: Mr. Clean and the Bagman
thor,
Fine with me if you want to remain ignorant of the issue. Not so fine if you want to claim I’m making stuff up when you are sticking your head in the sand.
Did everybody miss this story.
Why is this dead and nobody including GG is talking about it?
“And you, personally, are singularly ill-situated to object to the truth coming out.”
Ah. You have it. All perception is selective.
But how is it you know so much about my ‘situation’ you can relegate
my notion of ‘truth’ to an absolute degree?
Oh, I get it. Your perception of truth is omniscient.
You are The Way, the Truth and the Life.
sashal:
Sure, this was covered over a month ago. Do try to keep up.
Just not, you know, very diligently, because who didn’t expect the Clintons to be doing something in exchange for cash?
I never claimed you were making stuff up, agent provcateur. I’m claiming the sand is fine, and I jumping head first into it rawks!
Semanticleo,
I do understand, but I’d suggest you get busy. If you want to substantiate that, you’ve got a couple thousand posts here and at Maguire’s you need to delete or edit.

Ric

thor, it’s in fact extremely dumb to suggest that this is what Karl is discussing. So is that fact itself not instead only what you are trying to tell us about yourself, thor, under the transparent guise of claiming it is Karl who is dumb? Or does it just come naturally.
Can you even see your projected reflection in a mirror?
The only reason any of this is getting any play is because America is a racist country.
You know that, right?
BECAUSE OF THE ARCHIE BUNKERNESS!
Meat.Head.
Yeah but Archie Bunker still couldn’t get several hundreds of thousands of dollars loan, while being 10 to 50 Million in debt.
BTW: I actually have an ORIGINAL “Archie Bunker for President” beer mug, if any of you have the requisite scratch…
Yeah, that…and The Voices. Probably the very same Voices which also tell cleo that she rules the world of truth while at the same time being George Bushitler’s obligate victim, and also generously throw in that “Bush is omniscient”, which proves, for example, why “Bush lied” is necessarily true.
Possibly even the same Voices which have fooled thor into thinking s/he is smart, unless s/he simply thinks s/he is God – which wouldn’t surprise anyone.
Probably the same Voices which tell those with tin-foil meningealed Blank Slates that All America is Racist, but that they can blame their own projected racism on Archie Bunker, then let Edith and Louis Farrakhan loose on him and that there will thereby possibly not even be any further need for Reparations – except still from America, if any of it remains after these Voice-controlled-people-reflecting-their-own-voices also get through burning everyone at the stake other than themselves.
Which is why I’m trying to help them out in their Primary by way of a kind of unconventional “backfire” tactic myself.
