Election 2008: Super-Deja Vu Tuesday [Karl]

They are still counting ballots in California as I write this; they probably still are at post-time.  So a full-on breakdown of delegates and such is simply impossible.

However, when you look at the summary of the early exit polls and the exit poll from California, it looks like deja vu all over again.

As before, McCain generally won people disenchanted with Pres. Bush, the Iraq war and the economy.  As before, McCain generally won voters for whom personal qualities were more important than issue positions, and lost the conservative vote — though he does get enough of those who are “somewhat conservative” to win, as before.

On the Dems’ side, Clinton won six in 10 Hispanic voters, and seven in 10 Asians in California.  Hillary’s Hispanic firewall held most everywhere except Arizona and Obama’s home state of Illinois; regular PW readers already knew about the Asian-American involvement in Clinton’s HillStars and HillCorps in California.  As before, Obama attracted latte liberals while Clinton largely held onto her modified Mondale coalition (though Obama did better with white men last night).

As before, the Dems seem headed to something like a brokered convention (though iirc, the next round of primaries and caucuses favors Obama and may give him momentum).  On the GOP side, as before, McCain remains ahead, while Romney’s uphill climb still looks “Mount Everest-ian.”  All the moreso as the early media coverage will pile on the negative momentum.

As before, the media continued to discuss whether Huckabee was a spoiler for Romney, when he is more likely a spoiler for McCain.

And here I thought Groundhog Day was last weekend.

Rise and shine, campers!  It’s cooold out there today.

…and yes, that time-stamp is intentional.

  2. Matt, Esq. says:

Shoot me. By my calculations, we’re looking at a McCain/Huckabee ticket. On the republican side, for god’s sake. Two closet liberals running on the republican ticket. I feel ill.

  3. Yackums says:

It’s coooold out there every day; what is this, Miami Beach? Not hardly!

  4. alppuccino says:

I’ve taken the liberty of drafting a commercial script for Huckabee:

Are you getting tired of all the campaign ads that only talk negatively about war heroes and weight-loss miracles? Is your head spinning over strange religion voodoo and hair gel laced rhetoric? Sometimes it’s just nice to take a break from all the political he said/he saids and remember what Valentine’s Day is all about. Getting laid. And being vice president is gonna get me some major hot booty. And you know what kind of trim I’m used to getting, so Barbara Walters would fall into the “hot” category for me. So won’t you join me for the 18th annual Victoria’s Secret Lingerie Special on Bravo TV, and let’s all begin the healing process for America. God Bless.

I’m Mike Huckabee and I approve this message.

(staging note: have two grapefruits sitting on a shelf behind Huck’s head with there navals adjusted for best nipple appearance. Have a stuffed squirrel on the shelf below with the bushy tail centered on said grapefruits)

  5. Carin says:

But remember, Matt, that if you sit this election out you -personally- will be responsbile for what happens should/when the Dems win the presidency.

I believe that is the current narrative.

  6. alppuccino says:

    oh….there’s my medicine

  7. Ric Locke says:

If there’s nobody to vote for, figure out who to vote against.

I’ll say again: the list of people I wouldn’t vote for when the opponent is Hillary! is very short, and John McCain isn’t on it.

It probably fails to matter. Once the primaries are over and McCain has the official Nod, the Press will turn and start savaging him while pushing the Sainthood of Hillary. Sales of 6″ and larger PVC are already on the uptick; get yours before they close the factory.

    Regards,
    Ric

  8. Pablo says:

Am I hallucinating, or did I just hear the Hildabeast say “I won’t let anyone swiftboat this country’s future.”?

I think I just tripped a mental circuit breaker.

  9. alppuccino says:

You heard right Pablo. I think it’s because she’s planning on her team swiftboning America’s future.

  10. Pablo says:

Maybe she’s saying that we should have a President who was in Vietnam.

  11. mojo says:

    Don’t drive angry!

  12. Theresa, MSgt (ret), USAF says:

I’m wondering who the hildabeest was talking about when she said “we are going to take back America”. From whom you demented socialist c*#t? I would also ask who are you going to give it too? Oh wait, I know, the illegals aliens you have been pandering too since billy boob was in office. Remember Citizenship USA program anyone?

  13. geoffb says:

I believe also we seem to be headed for a McCain-Huckabee ticket and when McCain does make Huckabee his running mate it will be portrayed as “magnanimous John reaching out to those hateful conservatives and giving them a spot on his ticket”. Not as the concluding act of a back-room deal struck between two power hungry politicians.

Since it has been said that most Huckabee supporters do not like McCain at all it may be interesting but we are living in “interesting times” alas.

On the Democrat side Hillary-Obama ticket also seems likely. A similar marriage of the power loving class.

  14. The Ouroboros says:

I’m totally in agreement that some change would be a good thing.. There are all kinds of things in this country that could use some change.. some major.. some minor.. So what are these Donks thinking? With the Republicans sitting home in disgust and the Dems out in droves they have a chance to elect a leader that will (hopefully) make some positive changes over the next decade.. but they’re actually voting for a DC insider that’s been in the thick of screwing up this country for the last 16 years.. A political machine that’s as corrupt as any in Washington today.. they’re chanting “Change” and voting in the same ole, same ole! Are these people retarded or just on drugs?

  15. geoffb says:

“Once the primaries are over and McCain has the official Nod, the Press will turn and start savaging him while pushing the Sainthood of Hillar”

I agree with this also and the ammo they will use will be provided by the Clinton machine while Hillary remains floating above the fray except to play the victim when needed.

  16. geoffb says:

oops left off the ending y in Hillary.

  17. McGehee says:

Are these people retarded or just on drugs?

    Yes.

(I know, I know — but the weather sucks today and I didn’t get any sleep last night.)

  18. happyfeet says:

NPR already did this really kind of weird story where they explained in terms a three-year-old can understand that McCain Hates Abortion, but that you may not know this. You should know this. Abortion. McCain Hates It. So, coathangers and etc.

  19. Cave Bear says:

Al, you are on a roll. I love it…:)

  20. Carin says:

Not only does McCain hate abortion, but he’s also really old. But, really, it will be a few more months before this meme really gets going.

  21. Pablo says:

McCain/Huckabee is probably not electable. Evangelicals who don’t want to vote for McCain aren’t going to be swayed by a VP Huck. Conservatives aren’t going to be drawn to vote for a ticket with two liberal nannies on it. Smart money would be on the current GOPAC chair, and the guy who said this in his 2004 GOP convention speech:

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and incentive. And you cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they should do for themselves.

  22. Carin says:

Smart money wouldn’t have bet on McCain (an election ago, a year ago, or a month ago). Up is down, black is white, dogs and cats … well, they still hate each other in my house. But, I give up. I’m gonna just listen to Radiohead the rest of the day.

It was in “Closing of the American Mind” that it was said that music appeals to the soul alone. Intellectualism goes out the window. That’s what I need right now.

  23. Gray says:

    McCain/Huckabee?! Are you people high?!

No way. McCain hates, hates, the evangelical right.

  24. Education Guy says:

I don’t think McCain/Huckabee is out of the question any more than a Reagan/Bush ticket was out of the question. I do think Pablo might be on to something with the Steele pick. At the very least, it would allow the GOP to get in on the history making possibilities.

  25. McGehee says:

McCain hates, hates, the evangelical right.

If he ruled out everyone he hated, his can of strawberries would be his running mate and he’d get one vote in any election.

  26. Education Guy says:

Strawberries do speak to the common man, especially when you place them atop a mound of flaky sweet biscuits, ice cream and some sort of whipped topping/sauce.

    Second look at McCain?

  27. Pablo says:

Steele is an actual conservative and he’s charismatic as all hell. An actual conservative would take some of the stink out of the McCain ticket. Imagine if it comes out looking like the Clinton machine screwed Obama out of the nomination and she’s gotta run against Maverick/Steele. She’s likely going to have to announce her VP pick a good week before the GOP nom does, and I really can’t see her picking a guy like Obama. He doesn’t bring any particular experience to the table. All he does is outshine her. Does she need him to get the black vote? Not against McCain/JustAboutAnybody. But McCain/Steele? That’d be fun to watch and it would put a cork in her identity politics.

    Carin,

Smart money wouldn’t have bet on McCain (an election ago, a year ago, or a month ago).

I get your point, but it looks an awful lot like anyone who made that bet is about to cash in.

  28. McGehee says:

    Second look at McCain?

There has actually occurred to me something he could do that would make me reconsider my “never gonna vote for him” policy.

Unfortunately, he’d never do it, so there’s no point in my telling what it is.

It could also help him against Obama, if he did it…
