I agree with commenter Maxine Weiss who states:
Anyone who denigrates the Superbowl is anti-American.
It’s about so much more than Football. It’s about the Star-spangled Banner. It’s about all the unique commercials. It’s about the pre-show and half-time. It’s about tailgate parties, Dominoes Pizza and buffalo chicken wings. It’s about cheerleaders and drunkards who beat their wives.
Good, wholesome American fun, and anyone who takes an interest in society and culture should relish it.
Althouse has a point about Arlen Specter, though.
UPDATE: I’m sure that the fallout from the SalesLeads.com ads will be entertaining.
AA has knocked herself down a few pegs, afaic.
And as my brother rightly noted: “calling arlen specter an assbag is an insult to all plastic containers everywhere”.
Be careful taking too much of Maxine’s opinions to heart, Dan.
I think she’s a wee bit touched, if you know what I mean…
well, they did have that pre-game reading of the Declaration of Independence. I teared up a bit.
Arlen Specter is an egregious embarrassment. And that’s hard work given the company he keeps.
What do I get for not caring if Ann watches the Superbowl or not?
That thing about domestic is completely false, btw. The data has never supported, it’s an ill-conceived urban myth.
violence*
Blah, football is boring. Now the World Series, that’s all-American.
“I agree with commenter Maxine Weiss who states …”
Yeah, and she had lots of other stupid things to say.
Brian, you’re taking this a bit too seriously, don’t you think?
Besides, I’d never say anti-American when it’s merely un-American.
Also, I agree with Althouse about Specter.
I watched it for Tom Petty
Sorry, but no. That’s a myth. But moving on to real things about the game, WTF was that? Why on earth did the Pats leave the offensive line in Foxboro?
That sales lead site is toast. Not only are they about to receive a bunch of angry phone calls tomorrow, but their commercial sucked so bad that Dan didn’t remember their name.
SalesGenie.com
Oh, yeah. SalesWeenie.com.
Yes!
I was trying to decide if those SalesGenie ads were awful or offensive.
Watching Peyton Manning during the game was great.
“Holy cow, this turned into an exciting game!” exclaimed Cap’n Ed at 8:52.
For once, the game was better than the show. As for the commercials, I thought that one Coke ad was rather nervy. Are we really in a headspace now where we can have New Yorkers staring up into the sky, while giant flying things bump into their skyscrapers? I suppose at some point we’ll have to be, but…brrr…
Althouse tuned into the game at the ned…and was entertained!
The only thing that might save salesgenie is that the hysterical left would never do anything as neanderthal as watching football…
I can’t get to YouTube. Weird.
“Brian, you’re taking this a bit too seriously, don’t you think?”
Oh, I’m not finding her shtick particularly funny. Did you see her blog where she says Obama should be a butler, Oprah a maid, and perhaps if Obama loses he can park cars for the Kennedys. Not something I have a sense of humor about. Especially where she posts a stereotypical black maid picture to compare with the two.
I don’t think Oprah would make a very good maid at all. Call it a feeling.
Anyone who denigrates the superbowl is just as “American” as one who denigrates cock fighting, nascar and world class kayaking.
I’m an equal opportunity denigrator.
PUPPY BOWL!!
Pablo – I feel for you. As for the Pats, Karma can be a bitch.
Wow, I must have been wasted after the game. I don’t remember making a couple of those comments.
Not that I don’t agree with them, mind you.
I agree! I was never really into football much before. I just did not get why people enjoyed watching them so much. It was just a bunch of burly men running around in a giant field to catch and toss some ball. I found it unentertaining actually.
But, after watching it with my friends, I also did realize that it was actually become more than a game. It is camaraderie of people. It is spending time with other friends. It is working together as a team. it is fighting for one goal.It is moral support. It is victory. It is being American and being one with the country. And, in the end, it is being happy with a bunch of people who share the same passion as you.
Shiela,
That’s why, I agree, to denigrate football is un-American. And why we tend to root for the underdog.
Shiela,
If you’ve got a few bucks in the office pool it can be fun to watch, even if you don’t care for the teams or the game.
The dancer in that vitamin water commercial made it all worthwhile, even if both teams couldn’t lose and I didn’t win any money.
MarkD, you best hope Naomi Campbell doesn’t hunt you down for not recognizing her.
“Anyone who denigrates the superbowl is just as “American†as one who denigrates cock fighting, nascar and world class kayaking.”
That’s more like it. Since you didn’t agree with all her other stupid statements that’s enough for me on your accout.
She (or he or it) however is a racist troll. At Althouse I just posted a few other of the antics she did on her blog that makes me think that. Things like implying Jews and Blacks shouldn’t intermarry, and posting nooses in articles titled “Whites taking orders from blacks”, and assuming a black man, called a “professional negro”, couldn’t make it without affirmative action.
Yeah, she sounds ridiculous.
