Dems 2008: Harlem Not Disillusioned with Billary [Karl]

Score one for the cynical take on Bill Clinton’s recent use of racial politics on behalf of Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign, courtesy of the New York Times:

While the blogosphere and commentariat rang this weekend with angry declarations that he had crossed a line in his criticism of Barack Obama, many in Harlem seemed to mull it over, shrug their shoulders and say they understood, even if they didn’t quite agree.

For the past few days, political junkies have been asking, “Do the Clintons know what they are doing?”  Clinton Disillusionment Syndrome may have cost the endorsement of Sen. Ted Kennedy, even disturbed rabid Bush-haters like Jonathan Chait and Bob Herbert.  But if Harlem is any indicator*, any hard feelings over the Clintons’ calculated strategy of marginalizing Sen. Barack Obama as “the black candidate” will be limited.  The fallout, if any, will be among more upscale, educated, professional class voters who are likely Obama voters in the first instance.  And that is mostly a concern for the general election, not the primaries.

* Comparative census data for Harlem provided free of charge for the twitchy.

    upscale, educated, professional class voters

    You mean, intartubes peeps.

Whenever you mention “the twitchy” in one of your posts, This guy‘s face pops into my head.

That’s probably not what you mean.

That’s what we read the NY Times for, because they do the work other newpapers just won’t do:

“To be sure, interviews conducted on a single day, in front of a single building, are apt to produce a narrow point of view.”

In any event, Andrew Young knows why the people of Harlem support Bill Clinton, for the TRIM.

  4. Great Mencken's Ghost says:

Here’s a slogan: Obama will do for American what Ted did for Mary Jo.

  5. Sandra Cahoon says:

I am all for Hillary Clinton. She knows what it is all about. She should be the next president of the United States of America. She is an excellent choice for the first woman president of the US. I think that what President Bill Clinton was trying to say was that the race was turning into slams and he was trying to set it straight for Hillary and our country. I could look forward to the next presidential term if I knew Clinton will win. Otherwise, I feel afraid for our country as it is and as it has been. The change Obama would bring about would not be good for ALL of America. !!!

  6. B Moe says:

I wonder what Sandra means by “ALL” of America. ???

  7. McGehee says:

Maybe she means it would be good for only 99.999% of America, which would leave out some 3,000 Americans.

And that could be you. Or even me.

  8. cranky-d says:

Sandra has convinced me. Hillary! in ’08. It’s the right left thing to do.

  9. kelly says:

Sandra, isn’t it a bit early to be hitting the 150 proof bottle of earnestness?
