According to the New York Times, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s advisers say that Bill Clinton’s attacks on Sen. Barack Obama are working for their campaign and that Bill will continue to play a major role after the South Carolina primary.
What the Clinton campaign says anonymously to the media does not match how it acts. Yesterday, the Democratic race was back in truce mode:
Clinton retreated first. Under fire for airing misleading ads about her main rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, her campaign has stopped a radio spot that suggested that Obama (Ill.) was a closet Republican who supported former president Ronald Reagan and the ideas of the 1994 revolt that swept the GOP to control of both chambers of Congress. Obama’s campaign counterpunched with a radio ad that pointed out Clinton’s early support for the Iraq war and accused her of distorting Obama’s words. “She’ll say anything and change nothing,” the ad said. But by late afternoon, it, too, was off the air.
Even former president Bill Clinton — the catalyst for much of the heated rhetoric between the two campaigns this week — toned down his comments in a series of town hall meetings that saw the return of his political alter ego, the policy wonk. At an event Thursday afternoon in Walterboro, he spoke for nearly 90 minutes about the mortgage crisis, education, clean energy, the Iraq war — just about everything but his wife’s chief competitor, who never drew a reference.
This morning, Hillary said on the CBS “Early Show” that Bill might have gone too far in attacking Obama.
Earlier in the week, former Clinton pollster and adviser Dick Morris argued that the Clintons are playing “richchet politics”:
If she loses blacks and wins whites by attacking Obama, it will look dirty and underhanded to blacks. She’ll develop a real problem in the minority community. But if she is seen as being rejected by minority voters in favor of Obama after going hat in hand to them and trying to out-civil rights Obama, blacks will even likely feel guilty about rejecting Hillary and will be more than willing to support her in the general election.
Morris claims this theory is supported by Bill’s vow to go door to door there to woo black voters for his wife. The weakness in the theory is that while Bill is likely up for pitching some woo, there is not much news coverage since Monday suggesting he’s keeping that vow (in keeping with Bill’s general track record on vows regarding his wife).
Accordingly, it seems just as likely that the Clinton strategy was simpler, as Ron Fournier suggests in an analysis for the Associated Press:
Hillary Rodham Clinton has won in South Carolina.
No, not Saturday’s primary _ though it’s no longer outside the realm of possibility that Clinton will defeat Barack Obama here. What she has won in South Carolina is the larger campaign to polarize voters around race and marginalize Obama (in the insidious words of one of her top advisers) as “The Black Candidate.”
Fournier notes that Obama’s support among white Democrats fell in one week from 20% to ten percent — but those voters moved to John Edwards, not Clinton. Thus, Edwards is moving up in the most recent polls. You might think the Clintons do not want to be embarrassed by a surprise third-place showing in South Carolina, but they might be calculating that that keeping Edwards viable drains NotClinton votes from Obama. They may even hope that it will keep Edwards running through Super-Duper Tuesday to put a similar drag on Obama.
That strategy helps secure the nomination for Hillary, but the disillusionment with Bill among some blacks has to remain a longer-term concern for the Clintons — which is likely what drove Morris to argue as he did. The Clintons may have simply assumed that they can modulate the degree to which they play racial politics they inject to defeat Obama without unduly alienating voters they will need for the general election, banking in particular on the general historical trend of blacks being willing to be taken for granted by the Democratic establishment. If 2008 continues to shape up as a “change” election like 1980, 1992 or 2006, the Clintons’ bet will pay off. On the other hand, if the presidential race becomes close, as it did in 2000 and 2004, a marginal erosion in support from black voters could be deadly for the Clintons.
Update: Perhaps realizing that they overdid the racial politics — or perhaps playing ricochet politics – Hillary Clinton made an explicit pitch for black support in a speech at a historically black college in South Carolina today, surrounded by prominent black supporters.ÂÂ
Richland County Councilwoman Bernice Scott bluntly told the audience “this race is not about race or gender,” adding that the decision should come down to which candidate can “feed the sheep.” Probably not the metaphor Hillary wanted to hear… in public.
Vote Bubba and Chubba in ’08!
I’m tryin’ to be a good role model here, and in our house you can’t say “hate,” so, as my stepson would say:
“I dislike those Clintons with the intensity of a thousand suns.”
For once, some semi-honesty, honest because the sheep comment is so very true but not honest since this race is exactly about race and gender. And you damn well better believe the general election will be about nothing but either race or gender.
Karl:
Have you already mentioned that Obama should continue to emphasize to voters that he’s running against both Hillary and Bill? It seems to me that if Democrats are weary of “politics as usual,” then implying that a vote for Hillary is really a vote for Bill’s third term would be sound strategy.
If you’ve already referred to this, I swear I had the idea too…just kinda later.
Oh, Good Lord.
McGehee:
Do you think Bernice is making an allusion to Christ’s admonition to Peter to “feed my sheep”?
Either she doesn’t know what she’s saying, or she just recommended Hillary for Pope.
I am so depressed.
If Karl hasn’t explicitly touched on this, I can safely say I have on several threads. I personally think it remains the sole appeal of Her Thighness.
Yeah, I’m not sure that pointing out you’re also running against Bill helps you in Democratic primaries and caucuses, because Dems have battered-wife syndrome. The co-presidency angle will be more salient in the gen’l election.
Hillary Clinton made an explicit pitch for black support in a speech at a historically black college in South Carolina today, surrounded by prominent black supporters.
Can you say “cynically manipulative”? I knew ya could!
My great aunt is a died-in-the-wool Democrat and she refuses to vote for Hillary because in her words “She shoulda left that man…or killed him!” I think she’s pointing to a flaw in Hill’s character–i.e. if she doesn’t think highly enough of herself to dump a serial philanderer, why should the rest of us?
…before I check out here to go home, I also wanted to let you know, Karl, that I look forward to these campaign posts every day. You’re doing a great job.
“Sen. Hillary Clinton’s advisers say that Bill Clinton’s attacks on Sen. Barack Obama are working for their campaign and that Bill will continue to play a major role after the South Carolina primary.”
And she’s probably right, there are a lot of people out there who believe every word that comes out of Bill Clinton’s mouth.
Bill Clinton could tell a church full of people that Obama worked for the KKK, and they would believe it. Obama would counter with, “Hey, Bill Clinton said I worked for the KKK.” and Bill Clinton would counter that with a firm, “No, I did not. I simply stated the fact that for a black guy you’ve got a lot of white friends, and the KKK is made of mostly white folk. (Begin sound bite) Mr Obama, you need to stop trying to attack me and start promoting issues of substance that will move America forward… (applause) instead of trying to bury your opponents in slime like the Republicans did in the nineties. (applause) Mr Obama is using the same tactics that the right-wing echo chamber used on me when I was President instead of actually debating my wife who is actually running for President (applause over speech) on a platform of real change, not slimy accusations of racism!” (end sound bite)
That’ll be $300 Bill, if you’re reading this here site for the dick jokes.
There’s a cynical side to me that says the whole Clinon/Obama attacks are an act. They get the base riled up, they get the press to focus on the Democrats (instead of the Republicans, where there really is a contended race), and they’re setting up the Clinton-Obama “unity” ticket. Clinton makes it look like she’s healing the party by asking Obama to be her running-mate, Obama gets 8 years as a VP to eliminate all questions about his experience when he makes his run in 2016.
With John F’n Kerry inserting himself into the Barry v. BubbaCankles cage match (and, hey, we all know how NOT INSIGNIFICANT he is!), one wonders when AlGore will re-enter the political stage, all deus ex machina like. One would also be concerned as to whether the AlGore’s software could be rebooted to fit a stage as small as the US Presidential elections what with his world colossus EcoMessiah stature.
“Obama gets 8 years as a VP to eliminate all questions about his experience when he makes his run in 2016.”
Good idea. 4 years wasn’t enough for Dan Quayle…
Steverino, you magnificent bastard!
Thanks, Cowboy!
If I was running against Hillary, I’d point out that being married to someone who holds an office is not the same as holding that office. She’s a hollow shell, and in no way has the experience to be President.
I mean, I’ve been married to a woman before, but that doesn’t make me qualified to be Miss
America, for pete’s sake.
Them Clintons? They’re Nigger-Haters, plain and simple.
If I was running against Hillary, I’d be wearing a cup.
…probably up between my kidneys, by the time the election was over with.
Feed the sheeple. Fuck the sheeple. Either way, the end result has proven to not be very pretty.
Obama needs to keep telling where the Clinton’s are getting their money. He needs to keep saying that he is for change and they are for the same old thing. America needs change to bring us back to our superior standing in the world. We may have the power but heaven help us if we do not have the respect of the world.
Please, please, please visit the website of Obama’s church. http://www.tucc.org/about.htm It is extremely racist and anti-American. He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing that would be a divider, not a uniter.

BeCaUsE oF tEh ChAnGeYnEsS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And, he is a uniter, not a divider.
Have you gone to Obama’s church website yet? http://www.tucc.org/about.htm What do you think about their “non-negotiable commitment to Africa”? It never mentions a commitment to the U.S.A. They describe themselves as “African people, and remain true to our native land…” Excuse me, but America is their native land. This racist rhetoric is appalling!
“Please, please, please visit the website of Obama’s church. http://www.tucc.org/about.htm It is extremely racist and anti-American.”
Perfect fit for a modern Democrat! I wish him all the best!
Jim – Quit race-baiting.
Look, JD, I’m just saying that Obama tries to act like he’s beyond racial politics, but the church he regularly attends reminds me alot of Louis Farrakhan.
Jim – I was referencing a prior thread. Sorry. I guess you had to be there. Something about being a race-baiter for pointing out that someone else is race-baiting.
By the way, I have a history of voting for black candidates, including Governor Douglas Wilder of Virginia.
Jim – No need to prove yourself to me, or anyone else.
Jim,
JD was alluding to the argument in the comments of this prior post, and being a bit sarcastic, which is always risky on the ‘net.
The Clinton are out-slicking themselves! People are very itellectual, now. You can’t pour vinegar on their heads and tell them it’s raining! The clintons felt “entitled,” if you will to Blacks’votes! Big mistake!Black people have supported Bill Clinton even when he was morally wrong. We don’t owe he nor Hillary anything! However, “we are our Brother’s keeper!”
The Clintons ou-slicked themselves in SC. People are intelligent. They know when people are for real! They felt entitled to Blacks’ votes. Big mistake! Blacks have supported Bill Clinton even when he was morally wrong! We don’t owe Bill/Hillary a yhing. However, we are our Brother’s keeper! The Clintons have been to the mountain top for eight years; it’s Barack’s term!
Ok. Now someone rolls the 16-sided die, right?
happyfeet wrote, Ok. Now someone rolls the 16-sided die, right?
LOL.
Kelly, you mentioned the fact that John Kerry is insignfican, on the contrary, he is very, very significant. Keep following the campaign; and you’ll see why his endorsementof Obama is very significant. It might turn out that he’s one of Barack’s “Ace” in the hole. In politics/life, there’s a reason for every insignificant thing!
there’s a reason for every insignificant thing!
Now surfaces the evil spectre of Deterministic Spiritualism in service to Obama’s nefarious Dialectical Materialism which will visit upon this country a social policy rooted in a diabolical Positivism the likes of which the civilized world has never known.
I’m just sayin’.
Will Bill Clinton be a “shadow” pres? Haven’t we had a shadow presidency already with Dick Cheney in the wings? Enough with the dynasties, impeachable lies (and other stretches of the truth). Give me OBAMA AND A NEW BEGINNING.
Dick Cheney was elected, Carolyn. As Vice President, twice. Bubba is not on anyone’s ballot. At this point, anyone but Hillary will represent a new beginning. So, I’ll give you the latter, no questions asked.
You can’t pour vinegar on their heads and tell them it’s raining!
But you can pour vinegar on their heads of lettuce and tell them it’s salad. So there is that.
Carolyn – My 6 year old would bring change to the White House. My next door neighbors would prolly shake things up. Changeyness does not make for Presidential material.
South Carolina is 29%. Obama got 55% of the vote. Hillary and Bill said they couldn’t win in S.C. because it is so black. 26% of the non-black population voted for Obama. So it can only be concluded that Hillary and Edwards got 100% of the racist vote.
Or as Kanye West would say, “Hillary’s voters hate black people.”
I smell bumper sticker.
…….uh that should read SC is 29% black. I was distracted by
Senator Obama got more votes in every catagory but the MSM buzz still wants to paint it as racist to further the clinton agenda. It worked for a while but surprise …we have more outlets for news and opinion. MSM has lost it’s power to push us into a box of ignorance. The clintons took a calculated risk to lose in the short run but to count on the Dem’s to unite behind her in the general. If it works, it will be at a horrendous price to us Democrats and resultantly the nation.. That will never be forgotten or forgiven.
I see them as co-dependent enablers–who will do ANYTHING to maintain the illusion of the relationship and inherent power it gives them. This so evident in their manner, lack of ideology, desperation, lies and yes, even the theft of slogans and race baiting. When a female stays with a serial philanderer it sends the message of low selfesteem and a lack of respect for their children. During the last reported scandal, they went to a known philanderer for counseling, J Jackson. This is far from a ‘tough old bird’. She runs and has others fight her dirty battles. She is totally shut down..note no tears ran down her cheeks and she went right back in the same sentence to her stump speech.
They get my pity but NO Sympathy or vote.
AMERICAN AWAKE!!!! BILL CLINTON was a very successful president, HILLARY CLINTON (although she definitely stands on her own two feet) will have a seasoned foreign politician and ex President by her side to advice her!!! Wasn’t Bill Clinton’s Presidancy GOOD FOR AMERICA – we were excellent ECONOMICALLY – now look at us with the present one!!! DO THE MATH!!!! Hillary’s Compeition, albet a great speaker, is too young for the Presidency!!! WE ARE AT A CROSSROADS, leading to a DEPRESSION not a recession!!! If we don’t get the right President in the MIDDLE CLASS (who is the backbone of this great nation) will fall into the dust and be financilly ruined and our great, great, great, great grandchildren will be living in a 3rd world country and not have the lifestyle we enjoy today (momentarily, I might add – since the Republicans don’t want a middle class, only the very rich and the very poor!!!) What kind of AMERICA do you want!!!
I SAY HILLARY FOR THE U.S.A.

Guidry – You are a mental MIDGET
We have found the man who can do the job as the next president of the US. Therefore, lets not waste any more time and energy in-fighting. The world is watching and it is time to show that America is quite capable of doing what is right and brave, no matter how hard it is.
To Guidry (what a name, by the way!). Did you say that the Clinton administration was good for the country economically ? Go back to school and learn some basics of economics. Although the current imcumbent might be bad at addition and substraction and thereby has added to the problem that already existed, things like twin deficits do not happen over night, especially with economy the size of the US. What the Bush administration inherited was already a crippling economy which was skillfully disguised by the predecessor administrarion (ie. the Clinton Admin.). They (the husband and the wife team) were in the job for 8years during which time they laid the foundation for the economic shenanigan that we see today. Bush just made it worse by waging wars which have been soaking up huge amount of money that could have been diverted to rescue the market. Now you want to give the job back to the Clintons so they can finish what they have started. The total ruin of the US economy. Nice try. I think you are a foreign spy.
April – who is that man, and why do we need to prove anything to the rest of the world? What precinct is the rest of the world registered in, and when are they going to start ponying up their tax dollars? Are we to assume that Barry the Wunderchild is your man? SEXist ! Age-ist! Looks-ist !
April – Socialism is a better way, no?
*****It cracks me up when women rave about not liking Hillary because she didn’t leave Bill when he went out on her. It appears to me this is a life-or-death issue to women who are in their 70’s or 80’s, like my elderly relatives. I agree that Hillary’s reasons for staying with Bill are a mystery. ****If I had one question that I could ask her, it would be “Why didn’t you leave Bill?”. *******Then I read a comment from a Republican woman who loves Hillary because she stayed true to the Biblical teachings that say a woman should never leave her husband no matter what !!! and that marriage vows are sacred!!! So now Hillary is a hero to the Bible thumpers? Yahhhh!********Those of you who are complaining that the issues of race and gender are irrelevent and that we need to stick to the “important issues” are in denial about racism and sexism in the USA in 2008. It is not gone, otherwise why have we waited 232 years to have the first non-white-male candidates for our highest political office? *** Full civil rights in the political arena have not been realized by any group but WHITE MALES for the last 232 years! So this is a basic civil rights issue, and what is more important then that? Girls and minorities both need to see that ANYONE can be president. They have never experienced that..******
Because of the racism !!!:!!!!!! And sexism !!!!!!!!!!! Good Allah, these CNN trolls are lightweights. Why is it that the Dems cannot imagine any objection to Hill or Barry outside of race or sex ?
What is a CNN troll?
And you just proved my point.
The truth is, the only kind of candidate that will satisfy me is a lesbian who is also a Muslim.
So, we’re down to Irshad Manji then? Pity she’s Canadian, eh?
Finally we’ve seen the real Bill Clinton in SC? Did you see the “out of control”, anger, frustration, and vindictive behavior. It scared me! I’ve wonderered what a former president would do in the White House as a “1st Husband”. Now we know. It’ll be payback time for the Republican’s baby, Meanwhile Hillary will remodel’s the Oval office and try to find a desk Bill hasn’t used! After 4 years of that, we’ll all wish GW was back. Count me as a vote for a new beginning with Obama, or for the first time in 60 years, I’ll vote Republican before I’ll vote for a disfunctional, “Co-Presidency”!
If Hillary is elected and then Bill gets drunk and hits her on the head with a shovel, is that a domestic squabble or an assassination attempt?
This is not the time for Obama. We dont need another Bush-like president. He is inexperienced but eloquent. He will be too dependent on others because he lacks thr background experience for dealing with foreign policy issues, financial complexities, political inside perspectives etc. It strikes me that he is more about being the first Black man as president of USA than what is really good for the country. When he was first considering the presidency,( He was still keeping it a secret.) he was asked if he would like to be the running mate of Hillary and his bold response was, I will not run for VP. He was sitll wet behind the ears if you asked me. No one had ever heard about him and what he had done lately. That remark stuck with me and I would not support him. What is the rush? Why cant he wait and learn more about the job? Answer? It is all about Obama.
We dont need another Bush-like president
Their experience is similar in what way? One was the Governor of one of the largest States in the union, quite successfully, while the other graduated from Law school.
what he had done lately
How about, what has he done, EVAH ?
Bill Clinton was an immoral man..he disgraced the White House with his immorality and sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky..my goodness people..The morality of a president sets the tone of the White House and the country..and Bill Clinton did neither..How people can sit there and have the gullability to swallow his words amazes me beyond words..Hilliary cannot go to the White House..she will bring back all the curses that came with Bill Clinton’s reign..
“We dont need another Bush-like president. He is inexperienced but eloquent.”
Somebody needs to tell Kucinich one of his aliens is loose.
maybe none of them wanted the job? and actually, i think it’s been fewer years than that.
How many blacks have entered the primaries? How many women?
Stop this crap about the first black president!I’m black and I DON’T CARE if our next president is black, white, yellow, green, or purple! I almost don’t want to vote for Obama because it seems he will only get votes from the black community because he’s black! We have the ability to vote yet our ancestors didn’t get to, so vote based on what the PERSON canDO FOR AMERICA not race! The Clintons may get their comments turned into a race war because you keep looking for some race thing! So, what, am I racist now?
[…] this reflects a Clinton miscalculation or cynical ricochet politics may remain unknown until Bob Woodward decides to write a book about […]
As someone who is an unbiased observer in England,I find your politics fascinating at times but overall appalled by the gutter tactics the Republicans have perfected in the last two decades. These have become an invaluable tool in the hands of the Clintons. The Republicans may likely be smiling come November; after the most divisive character in the Democratic party [Hillary Clinton]has done away with decency and Obama.
“BILL CLINTON was a very successful president, HILLARY CLINTON (although she definitely stands on her own two feet) will have a seasoned foreign politician and ex President by her side to advice her!!! Wasn’t Bill Clinton’s Presidancy GOOD FOR AMERICA – we were excellent ECONOMICALLY -”
Ok. So We should elect Hilary based on Bill’s fortunate timing? Cmon, No real economist will ever say that our Economic upturn had anything to do with Bill or his policies. The 90’s boon was due in large part to the dot com explosion. Millionaires and Billionares were being made overnight. And who in hell would ever trust anything that Bill Clinton says??? I specifically remember watching a news conference with Bill Clinton standing there shaking his pen as he said “I tell you now I did not have sexual relations with that woman” Now this is to the American Public not just a judge or a lawyer(whom he also lied to in court under Oath). God help us all in Clinton takes the White House in any form.
I only have enough anger to do Bush and Chaney so I presume those who hate the Clintons must be hate filled people.I have watched the hate of the Republicans derail Gore and Kerry so I know hate can derail the Clintons. Good luck on your hate filled mission.I suppose it will be back to hating someone else after that.
andy,
Sorry, but not at all surprised, to read of how hate-filled you are. Funny that you chose to leave your comment here, instead of in the many threads about left-liberals revolted with the Clintons’ tactics in this campaign, and fessing up that they were no better in the past.
I cannot believe the self righteous babble of the bible thumping people so eager to throw the first stone at the Clintons. After all that has emerged about the sex lives of republicans who sought to impeach Bill and those who lied to go to war and kill4000 of our soldiers and 200000 Iraqies ,the Enron scandal the phony oil prices and the subprime mortgage ripoff, the selling of our port security to the UAE,when they thought we weren’t looking; the Halliburton move to United Arab Emirates, the bribery and child abuse of the Republican congress, the under the toilet door of the Republican senator you would think they would crawl into a hole and not be heard for a thousand years but I guess arrogance trumps honesty.
andy,
I’m just not feeling the love from you right now.
In the future, you could save yourself valuable time by copying-and-pasting from here.
Andy,
You do realize that Clinton was the one that sold the San Diego Naval base to Costco right? Yes the Costco owned by the Chinese government.. But thats ok because he is a Dem? Sounds like a double standard you are practicing. Every stone you tossed at a Republican can also be said of the Dems. Just trying to get some fairness in this.
the gutter tactics the Republicans have perfected
Warn me before you make those kinds of comments. I need to make sure there are no liquids in my mouth.
the hate of the Republicans derail Gore and Kerry so I know hate can derail the Clintons. Good luck on your hate filled mission.I suppose it will be back to hating someone else after that.
Dammit, andy. I just avoided spewing Dr. Pepper out my nose with the first one. Your babble was too much to tak.
andy must have recd his most recent marching orders and talking points, and decided to puke them all out in one post.
“Iraqies”?
What is that, like, diminutive Iraqis? Munchkin or Oompa-Loompa type Iraqis?
