Scott Thomas [Dan Collins]

There’s a big brouhaha about pseudonymous correspondent “Scott Thomas’s” reports to TNR, and The Weekly Standard’s Michael Goldfarb has done a good job of documenting the latest potential Stephen Glass episode in Iraqi War coverage. Personally, I thought she was much more believeable in The English Patient. Some of the issues that have arisen regard the layout of vehicles and the measures they’re equipped with, the likelihood of soldiers resorting

On torture and viral memes

Speaking of Ms Beyerstein (whose site I visited to check the spelling of her name for my previous post), here’s how she reacts to the full text of the executive order on torture, posted by Raw Story: In addition to banning torture and cruel and unusual interrogation techniques, the CIA is specifically prohibited from using a pair of additional techniques. First, the order explicitly bans, “sexual or sexually indecent acts

a brief conversation with my first Kenpo lesson

Kenpo side kick: “So. How you feelin’ about yourself now, bigshot?” me: “Honestly? Like if I had to, I could probably kick Hugh Hewitt’s ass. But Malkin or, say, Lindsay Beyerstein? I rather doubt it.”

Tortious Teenage Tortoise Torturer, Tony, Taken [Dan Collins]

More “fluff right” posting, because what could these stories possibly have to do with conservative concerns, particularly regarding the structure of narrative? In short, an autistic boy’s pet is tortoise-napped and repeatedly slashed and stabbed by a neighborhood psycho, then thrown into brush behind their apartment complex. An anonymous phone call leads the mother and son to the location of the badly injured tortoise. Police catch the perp. The turtle

Exciting, Vibrant London [Dan Collins]

Two vibrating rings which can guide the wearer around a city via global positioning satellite (GPS) have been unveiled by a British designer at the Royal College of Art. The rings are the invention of Gail Knight, who developed them as a way of helping women feel safe in areas they are unfamiliar with. “I admit that, as it is rings, they’re obviously more attractive to women – and I’d

Keith [Dan Collins]

I’ve just had a call from Keith. The bad news is, he’s probably got about 6 months to live. The right side of his heart was damaged in the attempt to clear out the calcified mass that was pressing there, but he wouldn’t be alive now if it weren’t for the partial repair of the valve that was done. He knows that given his history of thoracic surgeries, chemo and

Thanks!

…to Andrea Smart for the Randy Meisner Love Me or Leave Me Alone CD, which has become quite hard to find. I’ve wanted this disc for quite some time, and I was thrilled when it arrived so unexpectedly. Meisner, along with J.D. Souther, are two of my favorite artists from the Cal rock scene of the 70s that many people don’t know (outside their association with the Eagles). Great stuff.

The "Close to Me" post, Islamist edition (from the protein wisdom conceptual series)

A love letter to America

From Karol Sheinin, on the 29th anniversary of her plowing into Plymouth rock in a little rickety dingy made out of empty Vodka bottles and the skins of Russian potatoes. Five years later, she’d become a US citizen. America replies: “Don’t mention it, kid. Just don’t go speeding in school zones and keep the heroin use recreational, and we’ll always be cool. ” — And hey: enjoy the freedom!”

Everything that rises must converge: Vietnam edition

From Breitbart TV (via Tom Maguire and Don Surber), here’s the Darling of Davos, John Kerry, laying out some Brahman truthiness for the proles on C-Span: Sen. John Kerry said during a C-Span appearance that fears of a bloodbath after the US withdrawal from Vietnam never materialized. He says he’s met survivors of the “reeducation camps” who are thriving in modern Vietnam. An award-winning investigation by the Orange County Register
