Thanks!

…to Andrea Smart for the Randy Meisner Love Me or Leave Me Alone CD, which has become quite hard to find. I’ve wanted this disc for quite some time, and I was thrilled when it arrived so unexpectedly.

Meisner, along with J.D. Souther, are two of my favorite artists from the Cal rock scene of the 70s that many people don’t know (outside their association with the Eagles). Great stuff.

Stoked.

Take it to the Limit. Ahhhh.

  2. It is usually so hard to convince anyone that the 70’s was something other than a vast, regrettable wasteland when it comes to music.

Yes. Well, have you ever been stuck in the car with your dad when Cat’s In The Cradle came on the radio? Scarred for life I am.

Yup, I can imagine that would be quite difficult.

On my first night out in Nashville when I moved here years ago I went to the Bluebird to hear some “in the round” singer/singwriter dealio. We were standing in line outside waiting for our chance to get some seats and Bernie Leadon former banjo/guitar player for the Eagles, stood next to us and jammed out on his banjo with a slide (yes, “slide banjo”-welcome to Nashville) for a few minutes. We spoke a little about the 70’s scene and he talked about how there were thousands of great musicians from that era that will never be heard. They all moved to Nashville apparently and built studios so they could disappear and still make music. The next morning I waited in line for pancakes at the Pancake Pantry (a Nashville tradition) behind Garth Brooks.

I didn’t have much to say to Garth. Bernie was way cooler. I mean, Bernie was in the FUCKIN EAGLES MAN!@!!!….He played that line from “Already Gone” too which was awesome.

It was a sad day when Meisner left the Eagles.

Hey, I wonder if there’s any Souther Hillman Furay on youtube. “Life ain’t so easy in this border town…”

Or Flying Burrito Bros., mayhap? “This ol’ town’s filled with sin, it’ll swallow you in …”

Do I have a theme going here?

Okay, I found Sin City, and Gram Parsons wailing away. You kin listen to at:

I wonder if I kin find Gram singing Baltimore? Or Hickory Wind even… I’d probably come apart.

Wow. Have a look at that Sin City youtube. Starting about 1/3 of the way through it’s interspersed with what is clearly footage from the photo shoot for the Gilded Palace of Sin album cover!

Who knew that stuff was still around?

Here’s Emmy Lou talking about Gram Parsons (Hickory Wind in the background to start):

    Oh jeez, and here’s Baltimore!
