Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Him [Dan Collins]

A companion to this morning’s post, from RedState:

In both the House and Senate version of the stimulus there is a provision that is tailor made for the ACLU to shut down more boy scout troops, divinity schools, etc.

As Jeff Poor notes

Both versions of the bill, the House version (H.R. 1) that passed on Jan. 28 by a 244-188 margin, without a single Republican vote, and the Senate version (S. 336), which will probably be voted on in the next few days – include language that would “prohibit” modernization, renovation, or repair of facilities:

1. used for sectarian instruction, religious worship, or a school or department of divinity; or
2. in which a substantial portion of the functions of the facilities are subsumed in a religious mission

Such language is regrettable and could leave some institutions of higher learning susceptible to a legal action by organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) according to a spokesman from South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint’s office. . . .
The bill includes $20 billion for school “modernization, renovation or repair of facilities” – with $14 billion for elementary and secondary schools and $6 billion for higher education, which includes the secular string attached.

What exactly is “a substantial portion”? If an organization lets the scouts meet in their facility, will they no longer be able to use government money to fix their building?

It’s simple, really. You grow the public sector, shrink the private sector, and fund only what you deem ideologically sanitary.

I think Hillsdale had the right idea in never taking public money.

Doesn’t surprise me a bit. His comments had the smell of industrial grade stupid.

Some some day we’ll get over this “truth or untruth” nonsense and get down to brass tacks.

I’ll ask the same question I do about infrastructure. Just what have the states been doing with the moneys that they have been recieving from the Feds and their citizens in the form of taxes?

Oh…Blowing it on other stuff, eh…

And do you think this ban will apply to the Obama youth? I mean, if there’s any group that is sectarian or religious, that’d be one…

  12. dicentra says:

I HATE public funding for that reason: all of the ideological strings that are attached.

The fact that students who have gubmint grants and attend a private university makes the university subject to gubmint whims is vile.

“OK, so don’t take public funds.”

Easy to say if you’re trying to cadge donations from people who have been forcibly taxed to support all the other institutions who DO take public funds.

See I have to contribute to that pool whether I want to or not, and then some pin-headed bureaucrat decides who is “pure” enough to get the monies and who ain’t. Strangely enough, I would make different decisions than the pinhead.

And if the pinhead makes a decision that some pressure group hates, the lawyers pile on and take the decision away even from the gubmint.

Which is currently being run by the party that is heavily funded by lawyers.

    Go figure.

Let’s watch closely and see if any of these funds will be used in universities to renovate bathrooms to include ritual footbaths or maybe to build “meditation rooms” that end up being used five times a day for prayer by forehead-flattened whoreshippers — whoops, I may have spelled that wrong . . . or maybe not.

Hate isn’t the word you’re looking for, casual_assclown; despise fits much better. As in, I despise the Left and everything it stands for. Now, FOAD.

The Boy Scouts are independent, and that cannot be tolerated. If they cannot be subsumed into a youth corps for the party, then they must be eliminated.

  25. happyfeet says:

Haven’t the Boy Scouts sort of had their day though? I’m not sure it’s a product worth going to the ramparts for.

  26. Dan Collins says:

Robert Byrd was a Kleagle Scout, hf. It’s the sort of tradition we ought to keep alive.

  27. Carin says:

Happy – Boy Scouts are one of the few wholesome activities out there for our boys. In an age where are young folks are so … overly influenced by pop culture and video games and the general garbage. Boy Scouts are a good thing.
