Not sure Sean Hannity would recommend these, so forgive me. But here’s the stuff I’m listening to.
1. So That I Don’t Miss You – Nadine
2. The Ballad of Naked Man – Butthole Surfers
3. In Spite of Ourselves – John Prine and Iris DeMent
4. Faithless Love – J.D. Souther
5. Gimme Back My Dog – Slobberbone
6. Gravity’s Gone – Drive-by Truckers
7. The Man Comes Around – Johnny Cash
8. You’re My Home – Billy Joel
9. Watershed – Indigo Girls
Add your list in the comments, so that the more adventurous among us can get drunk and listen to other people’s ideas of decent music.
Then mock them.
I’ve been ripping my Depeche Mode cds. I’m very suggestible.
Except for being extremely resistant to suggestions from geriatric ponce du jour John Warner.
Heh. I just got back from pie-kea, and being rather suggestible myself, listened to both the Cash and Depeche Mode versions of “Personal Jesus” on the last leg of my journey.
Goldfrapp – Ride a White Horse in progress.
happyfeet:
I’ve been ripping my Depeche Mode cds. I’m very suggestible.
Man, if I’d been ripping Depeche Mode, I’d be more than suggestible!
Just kidding. Here’s what’s on the ipod I use when I run, in no particular order:
Peter Gabriel, “In Your Eyes” (‘cuz I know it lasts 13:43)
ZZ Top, “LaGrange”
Shooter Jennings, “Manifesto #1”
Lynard Skynard, “I Know a Little”
Beck, “I’m a Loser”
Union Station, “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow”
John Denver, “Eagle and Hawk” (please don’t laugh at me!)
Little Feet, “Dixie Chicken,” and “Fat Man in the Bath Tub)
B.B. King, “The Thrill is Gone”
Next ten tunes on my iTunes party mix:
Something about You – Level 42
Manuela Run – Toto
In the Stone – Earth, Wind & Fire
Love Is the Seventh Wave – Sting
Alla luce dal sole – Josh Groban
Fantasy – Earth, Wind & Fire
Ride My See-Saw – Moody Blues
West End Girls – Pet Shop Boys
Rosalinda – ThalÃÂa
Allegro/985 – David Lanz & Paul Speer
Guess when I grew up? Mock away!
No mocking, dicentra, but really–for EWF, you’ve gotta go with:
“Write a Song”
–or–
“September”
(Guess when I grew up!)
“September” is in there somewhere, it just wasn’t in the next ten. :D
“Love Like Blood”- Killing Joke
“Riviera Paradise”- Stevie Ray Vaughan
“Snowdon”- Doves
“Shooting Shark”- Blue Oyster Cult (I wish I could add the umlauts)
“My Breathing”- Gary Numan
“Great Southern Land”- Icehouse
“Dirty Creature”- Split Enz
“Desert Rose”- Eric Johnson
“Start!”- The Jam
“She’s Lost Control”- Joy Division
Of course, “conservatives” like me don’t listen to music, since “we’re” not as “artsy” as certain “others.” Unless of course it’s the Horst Wessel Song, then we’re all ears! And Jackboots!!
Pet Shop Boys did some things that were only brilliant. Being Boring was one and the remake of U2’s Where The Streets Have No Name, off the top of my head. The one that sings has has no lack of charm either:
And Cowboy, them’s ones is Feat.
My emasculated husband has left our music server in disrepair for the last month. Waah!
happyfeet:
Damn. Nothing an English teacher hates more than being wrong about spelling!
cjd:
Any song by Stevie Ray Vaughan belongs in a top ten.
I blam myself.
Cowboy:
“John Denver, “Eagle and Hawk†(please don’t laugh at me!)”
When I was a teenager I thought John Denver was god, and when I died I’d go to Aspen.
Not listening to anything right now, unless you count Carly Simon singing the sound track for Piglet’s Big Movie. Gah! Time for some kids to get in bed.
Ardsgaine:
When I was a teenager I thought John Denver was god, and when I died I’d go to Aspen.
Ditto. Except I lived in WY, and JD just affirmed what we already knew.
As for Carly Simon, there were YEARS when the only song that ran through my mind was Barney’s “I love you, you love me…”
Those were dark days.
I don’t have an ipod. Cause I have children in college. Therefore, I don’t have a lot of neat shit that others do. The children have ipods of course.
I had to take the old lady’s Tahoe (heh heh, my wife drives a ho) to get the oil changed today and on the way to and from listened to a couple of CD’s that I purchased back when the children were considerably cheaper to maintain. The Bose was kicking some serious ass, I don’t care what all you audiophylic elitest bastards say. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed about 6 tracks off of Chicago Transit Authority, and totally got the shit kicked out of me by another 4 or 5 tracks off of REO Speedwagon’s You Get What You Play For. It’s a live album that the boys from Champaign put out before they went straight pussy.
Cowboy:
“As for Carly Simon, there were YEARS when the only song that ran through my mind was Barney’s “I love you, you love me…—
I absolutely drew the line at Barney. Aussies of doubtful sexuality wearing what looked like old Star Trek uniforms and singing about fruit salad were one thing, but I coulda shot that dinosaur and nailed his purple hide to my wall without a twinge of remorse.
Sticky B:
“I don’t have an ipod.”
Ditto. Not on account of money so much as lack of interest. To compensate, I’m playing this on the computer. It’s nice and mellow, which is what I’m in the mood for tonight.
“It’s a live album that the boys from Champaign put out before they went straight pussy.”
If I never again flip on the radio to hear “Hurd it from a freend, who hurd it from a fre-yend who-oo, etc…” it’ll be a good life. I listened to Get What You Play For once back in the day, though, and I think you’re right. It’s like they were two different bands.
They should make an iPod for guys.
“Sweet Emotion” – Aerosmith
“Foreplay; Long Time” – Boston
“Pepper” – Butthole Surfers
“Rebel, Rebel” – David Bowie
“Karn Evil 9 -1st, 2nd & 3rd Impressions” – Emerson, Lake & Palmer
“Locomotive Breath” – Jethro Tull
“It’s Bad, You Know” – R.L. Burnside
“I’ve Seen All Good People” – Yes
“La Grange” – ZZ Top
Loaded, tonight, in a finetune online music account. 48 quick favorites, all online, on my blog, playing next tab over.
Only because I’ve lost my original hard drive’s MP-3’s, and I don’t have a personal iTune player (I’ve borrowed my daughter’s, occasionally, but didn’t care for whatever in the world she had loaded on it…college kids today, out of control!)
I don’t have an Ipod, either. I have mostly been listening to CDs of the Last Waltz and an old Creedence live show. I listened to some Neil Young to learn some covers for a benefit show with a pick up band for the local homeless shelter, but don’t tell anyone- don’t want to ruin my image as an insensitive prick.
“They should make an iPod for guys.”
Yeah. Vaguely phallic shaped, and painted camo…
“Never Gonna Change”- Drive-By Truckers
“New World Order”- Ministry
“Sunday Morning, Coming Down” Johnny Cash
“Enjoy The Silence”- Depeche Mode
“Deeper and Deeper”- The Fixx
“Walk”- Pantera
“Tear You Apart”- She Wants Revenge
“Go To Sleep”- DMX, Eminem
“Dun Ringill”- Jethro Tull
“Fast As You”- Dwight Yoakum
So, apparently my iPod is as schizo as I am. So good when your machines emulate you…
–2. The Ballad of Naked Man – Butthole Surfer–
Love them.
–ZZ Top, “LaGrange” —
Right on…just saw them – backstage (well, side-stage but behind the “wall”) they’re rad, did Hendrix “Foxy Lady’ too (Gibbons said Hendrix taught him to play or mentored him or something) – rad show, Pretenders and Stray Cats too.
Right now I am all crazy about:
“Something To Talk About” – Badly Drawn Boy
“Edie” – The Cult
“Icky Thump” – White Stripe’s
“Teenies Blues” – Oliver Nelson
“Goo Goo Muck” – The Cramps
“Why Can’t I Have You” – The Cars
“Pinball Wizard” – The Who
“Destory Everything You Touch” – Ladytron
‘Kiss Me Deadly” – Generation X
“Summertime” – Janis Joplin
“Other Side of the World” – KT Tunstall,
” Sweet Home Alabama” -Lynyrd Skynyrd
“Heart to Glass” – Blondie
“Me and My Desire” – 999
“Barely Listening” – Pilot Speed
“Changes” – David Bowie
“Welcome To My Nightmare” – Alice Cooper
“I’d Like To” -Corinne Bailey Rae
“Paperback Writer” – Beatles
oh and “Rich Girls” – The Virgins — is pretty good too.
and “Stop Me” – Daniel Merriweather
Butthole Surfers, saw them twice when I lived in Austin. First was at a little place called Liberty Lunch, and they were great. Second time was them headlining at the Austin Music Hall, with the Toadies, the Reverend Horton Heat, and some other band whose name I don’t remember. Everyone BUT the Butthole Surfers was great, and they sucked, Gibby Haines was on a tear, or at least acted like it, and it was a depressing end to an otherwise great show. Still miss the music scene there, sigh…
Don’t really have a list of what’s next, nor an iPod, but in heavy rotation on iTunes:
“Orpheus” – Ash
“This Time Imperfect” – AFI
“Veteran Of The Psychic Wars” – BOC
“I Will Survive” – Cake
“I Want You To Want Me” – Cheap Trick
“Angel Mine” – Cowboy Junkies
“Grace Is Gone” – Dave Matthews Band
“Why Should I Care” – Diana Krall
“Away From Me” – Evanescence
“Baker Street” – Foo Fighters
“#1 Crush” – Garbage
“C’mon” – Go Betty Go
“Paint It Black” – Gob
“Coma” – Guns N’Roses
“Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” – Harry Connick
“Hurt” – Johnny Cash
“Train Of Consequences” – Megadeth
“Whiskey In The Jar” – Metallica
“Didn’t I” – Montgomery Gentry
“Butterflies and Hurricanes” – Muse
“Jet City Woman” – Queensryche
“Guadalcanal March” – Richard Rodgers
“Furious Angels” – Rob Dougan
“Time Stand Still” – Rush
“Life During Wartime” – Talking Heads
“Roads To Moscow” – Al Stewart
Okay, so that was more than 10. It’s a good representation, though.
niiiice Noah.
Peter Gabriel, “In Your Eyes†(’cuz I know it lasts 13:43)
13:43? Kewl. Know where I can get a copy of that? The version I have is only 5:30, and I dig Peter Gabriel, esp. “Solsbury Hill” and “Games Without Frontiers”
I would recommend:
1. Rush “YYZ” (from the Exit… Stage Left, including the solo)
2. Steely Dan “FM (No Static At All)”
3. Meat Loaf “Paradise By The Dashboard Light”
4. Kenny Loggins “Return To Pooh Corner” (a great kids’ song, too)
5. James Taylor “Secret Of Life”
6. Jackson Browne “Loadout”/”Stay”
7. Harry Chapin “Taxi”/”Sequel”
8. Elton John “Funeral For A Friend”/”Love Lies Bleeding”
9. Dire Straits “Brothers In Arms”
10. Allman Brothers Band “Jessica”
What can I say? Those are the songs that caught my eye – and my ear – when I just scrolled through that directory (and its 1,600+ songs).
I don’t find it strange that the Butthole Surfers found there way onto two of these lists.
I suppose what I find strange is the nature of the lists and the fact that Burl Ives isn’t on any of them.
Any of you folk using LastFM to keep track of your musical vanity?
I admit I am totally digging Timbaland’s “The Way I Are” – for a younger sound — come on foggies…branch out.
–I suppose what I find strange is the nature of the lists and the fact that Burl Ives isn’t on any of them–
And a Holly Jolly Christmas to you too Trippin’Republican.
Drumwaster, your “Roads to Moscow” I’d forgotten, somehow. Right up there with Lightfoot’s “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” for ballard greatness.
Husker Du – Standing in the Rain
Jet – Cold Hard Bitch
John Cafferty…- On the Dark Side
Johnny Cash – Hurt
The Smithereens – Blood and Roses
Maria McKee – I’ Gonna’ Soothe You
Luther Allison – Low Down and Dirty
Weezer – Hash Pipe
Velvet Revolver – Fall to Pieces
Susan Tedeschi – Rock Me Tonight
Sugar – Hoover Dam
I’ll probably get around to these before the night is over.
A few months ago Dan Collins linked to a video of a songstress who I thought was pretty entertaining. It was a video of her singing while her tattoos became animated. Anyone remember the name for me?
Hash Pipe is pretty ace.
Someone dedicate “(You’re) Having my Baby” -by- Paul Anka to Amanda Marcotte.
Or change it to “Aborting my Baby”?
Boogies (Hamburger Hell) ~ Todd Rundgren
Good Vibrations ~ Beach Boys
Hello Goodbye ~ Beatles
Stardust ~ Benny Goodman Sextet
Trouble ~ The Music Man
Big Shot ~ Bonzo Dog Band
I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party~ Beatles
Stars and Stripes Forever ~ Sousa
American Patrol ~ Glenn Miller
Pedernales Stroll ~ Asleep at the Wheel
Try “Pinball Song” by Slobberbone. pure genius.
ha, I have a shuffle and thanks to RTO adding stuff to the hard drive I have no idea what half the things are that it plays. Last night I heard the theme song from Jonny Quest.
Might I also recommend Tom T-Bone Stankus’ “Existential Blues”
T-Bone seems to bridge Weird Al and Frank Zappa, in the 30-second soundbite I found.
I don’t have an iPod, either, so I guess I’ll just list the last ten songs my Windows Media Player randomly spat out:
“Coffee + TV” – Blur
“The Magnificent Seven” – The Clash
“In the Name of the Father” – Black Grape
“Pump It Up” – Elvis Costello
“Sweetest Thing” – U2
“Space Oddity” -David Bowie
“Crazy” – Patsy Cline

Topsecretk9:
niiiice Noah.
Thankyew, thankyew.
And I have to admit that some of my more ‘off radio playlist’ stuff comes from…video game soundtracks.
Oh Themistocles, I see your Summer Days, and raise you a “I woke up in ove this morning” buddy…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTvUT_Hx4Dc
And just about anything by Tom Lehrer – “Masochism Tango” or “Poisoning Pigeons In The Park”
You rock Topsecretk9. I’ll call with “You Are Always on my Mind”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YahvQpinF88
Is it just me, or is the time server half an hour off? Did we shift to “Chavez Time” without mentioning it?

Great Googley Moogley! That’s a close approximation of the Master, but Al missed the zircon-encrusted tweezers and the Sears Poncho references.
No foolin’! A good video, and good night.
Most every Friday, I post a streamable, semi-random playlist of tracks I have stumbled across while gathering stuff for my regular web haunt. The most recent “Cutout Bin” is here; I would have linked everything here, but the software sees it as spam.
This Friday’s list contains a fair share of kitch: The Mountain Goats – Cubs In Five; Sweet – Ballroom Blitz; Heart – Barracuda; Fleetwood Mac – Don’t Stop; The Allman Brothers Band – One Way Out; Stealers Wheel – Stuck in the Middle With You; Led Zeppelin – Hey Hey What Can I Do; The Faces – Stay With Me; Sweet – Little Willy; Thin Lizzy – The Boys Are Back In Town; Reunion – Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me); Elton John & Kiki Dee – Don’t Go Breakin’ My Heart; The Boy Least Likely To – Be Gentle With Me; The Kinks – Picture Book; The Sonics – Boss Hoss; R.E.M. – Superman; Caribou – Melody Day; Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians – My Wife & My Dead Wife (live); The Vibrators – Yeah, Yeah, Yeah; Pretenders – Precious (nsfw); The Jam – I Need You (For Someone); Four Tops – Reach Out, I’ll Be There; James Brown – Sex Machine; Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings – Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In; Wilson Pickett – Land of 1000 Dances; Prince – Little Red Corvette; Of Montreal – Rasberry Beret (live); Rick James – Super Freak; Talking Heads – Life During Wartime; The Untouchables – Free Yourself; The Clash – Train In Vain; The Fun Boy Three – Our Lips Are Sealed; Trio – Da Da Da; Men Without Hats – Safety Dance; A Flock of Seagulls – I Ran; Killing Joke – Eighties; The Dandy Warhols – Bohemian Like You; Run-D.M.C. vs. The Knack – Tricky Sharona; Frankie Valli – Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You (remix); and The Go! And I hit skip on about a million other songs that I just didn’t want to hear.
What I think is weird is that y’all plan ahead your music. I just keep rotating the wheel along with my mood, play as she goes.
For Goodness
For Goodne…Forgoodnesssake! I got to hippy-hippy !
SHAKE
Wooooooh!
There are 472 tunes by 113 artists on my .mp3 player. It’s set to “shuffle.” Every so often I hear a tune I’d forgotten I had.
Ok..Ok.. I admit it.. The guilt and shame have kept me up all night…
I don’t really own an iPod.. yet.. Not even an MP3 player.. I’m still using a portable CD player.. There, I said it…
I just typed songs I like from a stack of CDs on my desk…
I feel like such a slack-jawed hillbilly stuck in the 90’s.. and an unmasculine one at that…
look at it this way, you can replace a portable cd player for a hell of a lot less than an mp3 player. you’re ahead of the game already.
I keep mine on shuffle in the car and it seems like i skip every other song.
Wow, I must have been in a starnge mood:
Short Tales of the Black Forest: Al Dimeola & John Mclaughlin
Heavy Duty Judy: Frank Zappa
Cajon Pass: Phil Keaggy
Fool in the Rain: Led Zepplin
Lost Woman: James Gang
You Can Close Your Eyes: James Taylor
Little Wing: Stevie Ray Vaughn
Something So Right: Paul Simon
Castles Made of Sand: Jimmy Hendrix
Ashokan Farewell: Mark O’Conner
Bonus Pick:
Ode to a Butterfly: Nickel Creek
#’s 1 & 3 are instrumental since I have an affinity for instrumental solo acoustic guitar.
The Kings of Leon “Genius” and “Wasted Time”
The Strokes “You Talk Way Too Much” and “Ize of The World”
Sublime “Greatest Hits”
The Beatles “Hey Bulldog”
Pink Floyd “Lucifer Sam”
Beck “No Complaints”
James Brown “Let A Man Come In And Do The Popcorn”
Outkast “Spottieottiedopaliscious”
Aphex Twin “Alberto Balsalm”
…and for a little good measure, anything by Zeppelin.
Matthew Ebel, his entire album Beer and Coffee. Top notch stuff.
Plus a bit of Ben Folds.
I once taught a rhetoric / persuasion class at the DU music campus, and to illustrate some of my points about language musically, I played three versions of “Sunday Morning Coming Down” — Shawn Mullin, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash.
We looked at what made the songs different (cadences, choice of inflection, word choice [in the instance of Cash], etc.). I think it really hit home to musicians when I was able to make the analogy to how important is the difference between, say, a semi-colon or an m-dash compared to a period or a comma, or how a single word, properly placed or inflected, can change the whole composition in very subtle ways that nonetheless have a tremendous effect on how we come to view the whole.
I felt like Poe.
“Add It Up” Violent Femmes
“World Full of Hate” Dropkick Murphys
“Kerosene” Miranda Lambert
“Don’t Drag Me Down” Social Distortion
“Black Friday Rule” Flogging Molly
“I Write Sins, Not Tragedies” Panic! At the Disco
“Don’t Take Me For Granted” Social Distortion
“Mixed Emotions” Rolling Stones
“Lock, Step & Gone” Rancid (everything off of “…And Out Come the Wolves” is fantastic)
“Under the Fall” Toby Keith
You live Drive by Truckers? Download “Goddamn Lonely Love” and “Women without Whiskey” from the Live at the 40 Watt (in beautiful Athens). Also, I didn’t find any Lucero anywhere — definitely download “Drink ’till We’re Gone”, “Nights like These,” and “The Mountain” if you want good drinkin’ music.
“Da Do Ron Ron” by the Crystals
“What Do All The People Know?” by The Monroes
“88 Lines About 44 Women” by The Nails
“The Boss” by The Rumblers
Good convertible music, but it has been raining here for the past week. Good thing, we’ve needed the rain. * N.B., I think I have the groups right, but the discs are in the car and I am not.
Not to go to far into your field, Jeff, but inflection is what makes a statement a question. “This is all?” becomes “This is all.” with the proper inflection.
And that changes everything. In my defense, legal writing, where the court limits the number of pages (and regulates the font, the font size, and the margin dimensions) forces the writer to get to the point fast and take great care with how the argument is framed and supported. So inflection and word choice is very important to the legal writer. And the law is a profession built entirely on words.
I could pursue this further, but this is just a comment on a post; and I really do not want to take all of the time for that. There are chores to do, personal writing to catch up on, and – look! the sun is out and the convertible is calling!
“One Fine Day” by The Chiffons
“It’s The End Of the World As We Know It” by REM
Ouroboros, if it makes you feel any better, I’ve only had my .mp3 player for less than two weeks.
And that after having spent three years finally deciding I needed to get one.
Thanks McGehee..
I’m still in that deciding stage I guess… Actually I like the idea of of an iPod/MP3 player.. Hell, I like the idea of an all in one iPhone.. I just don’t cotton to spending the price of a weekend in Vegas to get one…
but… did you see that the XBOX 360 has dropped under 279.00? Halo 3 here I come…

Loeki Stardust Quartett: “Fuge Around the Clock”
but then again, I like listening to DNA Music …as composed by biologists and mathematicians.
…and I don’t care what Hitler did with his music, Wagner had a clue.
“The Ballad of Naked Man – Butthole Surfers”
Now THAT’S manly!
I saw them in Austin way back at the student union on UT’s campus. Great show.

Surf rock with some metal & Japanese influence. Very positive vibe.
Saw Slobberbone play a few years ago. I had a great time at their show. But I had no idea anyone would have heard of them outside of TX.
Zelda – Good to see your name pop up round here. Hope things are going well for you. I am preparing for our trip to Houston for a huge Vietnamese wedding, where I should be a good foot taller than the other 500 in attendance. No sneaking out for smokes for me ;-)

My ipod got dropped (check the passive verb) a couple too many times. Now it just has a little graphic of an ipod with an unhappy face if I turn it on. So I’m listening to Spoon’s latest, all the way through, album style.
[…] waiting for word from South Carolina, how about some music? Our esteemed host has talked playlists from time to time, so in a shameless bit of plugging my regular gig, I’ll point you to hours […]
