While waiting for word from South Carolina, how about some music? Our esteemed host has talked playlists from time to time, so in a shameless bit of plugging my regular gig, I’ll point you to hours of streaming music I have compiled over at the Hype Machine. I add an hour to 60 minutes weekly. You can stream songs individually or jukebox them with the pop-up player option at the top of the list.ÂÂ
Top of the list is some music for those as interested in Sunday’s NFL contests as they are in today’s political ones. As Jeff G is a fan of the Plimsouls, I’ll note that this week includes a nifty live version of “A Million Miles Away.” There is also “King of Pleasure” – a track from Joe Jackson’s upcoming album, which reunites him with his original rhythm section and recaptures a bit of that old school JJ sound. But there is more than “alternative” music represented – including Nelson Riddle, Gram Parsons, John Lee Hooker, etc.
That Ben Folds song always makes me feel happier than I would have if I hadn’t listened to it.
The Gershwin quotation at the end is a nice touch in that track.
I am ignorant of that. I’m ripping the cd now and then I’ll get learned on the Gershwin thing. All I know is that Every Time You Say Goodbye song. I think that’s Gershwin. Also I think Mark Steyn has this huge Gershwin fetish though I seem to remember.
One thing I know to be true in this world is that no one who can play piano like that ever sleeps alone unless they really force the issue.
It’s a quote from “Rhapsody In Blue,” the same music that appears in United Airlines commercials.
Oh. I kinda remember now why this was over with those cds over there.
It’s been awhile since I’ve talked new music with you, Karl, so let me mention a few current mentionables that weren’t on your playlist. British Sea Power (I loves me those Brighton bands, yes?) has knocked Jens Lekman out of my Most Played List with a great EP… and an upcoming CD that sounds magnificent (I liked the first two records but never expected anything so good). I’m really into Los Campesinos! and awaiting their first full-length this year — their single “International Tweexcore Underground” was a Top Fiver for me this year. And I’ll be seeing MGMT/Yeasayers tomorrow for $8, and it’s 5 minutes from my house… so that’s nice.
Oh. I didn’t know we were doing that. There’s an Iowa band (how cute is that) called The Nadas that I like to mention just cause the last cd i got of theirs was a 2005 one called Listen Through The Static and it had this one charming understated song called Celebrate that it took me forever to realize was a sort of post 9/11 we love America anthem. But for the most part the whole set worked pretty well I thought.
Bender Bending Rodriguez,
I have blurbed the bands you mentioned (all except Los Campesinos! within the last week or two – not for the first time) at my regular spot. The “Cutout Bin” tends to be lighter on indie bands because the tracks are often those I stumble upon while collecting links for the bands I do feature on-site.
happyfeet,
I don’t think I’ve heard the Nadas, but will seek them out.
I love the Plimsouls. I’ve got them on vinyl; they’re high on my list of to-digital conversions.
I can’t bring myself to buy CDs of stuff I’ve already got on vinyl; I just can’t.
“I add an hour to 60 minutes weekly.”
You might think about narrowing that down a bit. Seriously, after a while people expect a certain level of output, and you can’t be all over the map like that.
