Abdulkhel, Pakistan villagers to Taliban:  “You can take our lives…”

”…but you can never take…OUR MUSICAL TRANNIES!”

Somewhere over the Percocet rainbow, the ghost of Judy Garland is smiling and having herself a nice double martini.

I guess after all my “talking back to drag-queen music” entries, I should have something to say.  Apparently the locals take their drag-queens seriously.  I’m kind of suprised that they perform at weddings.  It appears that they’re fairly mainstream, which I admit I find kind of strange.

Okay, more than kind of strange.

I always suspected that if you ever got Rue Paul really, really pissed, you’d regret it.

When I read this I could only think: “there’s hope for Pakistan yet…”

But when are the homosexual activists going to start “gay-straight alliances” in Pakistani schools? Huh?

Anyone wanna come catch the midnight showing of “Rocky Horror” at the Islamabad Rialto with me tomorrow?

I guess that’s what passes for entertainment in Pakistan – show tunes followed by an encore presentation of the classic “The Wall”.

I have studied the Pashtun.  I lived, worked and shared dangers with Pashtuns.  I broke bread with them, I helped their villages and farms.

I think there some things I will never understand about them, however.

This is one of those things.

Tribal cultures are big on transsexuality.  If you are a person who can do it and isn’t faking it, and people can tell, it means you must have big spiritual power.  (To simplify, it means that you have bot the spirit of a man and a woman in you, and so have twice the spiritual oomph as a normal person – you can walk in the world of man or woman.)

Look up native american ‘berdache’ if you like.

Wait a second, Judy Garland wasn’t a transsexual (how many S’s are there supposed to be in that word?!?)!!!!!!!!

Either that or a number of my childhood fantasies involving old movies and songs were hollow lies!
