Okay, I somehow killed my first attempt. That’s what you get when you edit in the browser rather than doing a cut and paste from something more reliable.
Anyway, in the first installment in this series, I was told that Bushmills is better than Jameson. I will get back to you on that after I go shopping again. If it costs a lot more, then I cannot count it as “better,” since my claim was that Jameson is very good for a reasonably-priced liquor. Here in the Northern Midwest, in a state that has higher alcohol taxes than California, I pay $16 for a 750ml of Jameson (one place sells it cheap, normally you’d pay $18.50), and about $25 for a 750ml of Glenfiddich or Glenlivet at Costco. If Bushmills is less than $20, it may qualify. Otherwise it’s in a new tier.
What really motivated me is seeing Obama on Fox and Friends (Jeezus, they’re replaying Hillary doing that awful Southern accent again… yikes). Why is Obama running? Why is he even considered to be a viable candidate? He has barely any experience in politics (which could be both good and bad [someone just mentioned Thatcher when talking about Hillary!… I weep]). So why is he so popular?
I have a theory.
We finally have a Black! Man! who is properly liberal and is good at rallying the troops without scaring them by using non-white-Midwestern speech patterns. We have lacked having a president from the Black folk, and it’s good to fill in a quota. In my more liberal youth, I felt that way about women, and actually voted for Barbara Boxer on that basis.
Man am I sorry now.
I have yet another theory, and that is that while many people are willing to say in polls that they will vote for Obama (since telling a pollster how you really feel can be embarrassing, as I recall when telling a pollster I favored a border fence), in practice I expect him to get much less of the vote. However, as long as polls that aren’t true votes have the power, I expect him to be very successful. Once the primaries come around, not so much.
Then again, I am under the influence.

Oh, and Fox and Friends are pushing a story such that Obama had a few unpaid parking tickets from when he was a first-year law student, and that he had to pay them recently.
It’s such a non-starter of a story. Really, really weak.
“We have lacked having a president from the Black folk”
I thought that Bill Clinton couldn’t run again.
Because…. he was the first black president.. So we were told. That jerk Lincoln was a poser.
Bushmills is good, but Jameson’s is better.
Both are over priced. If you want a quality Irish whiskey that doesn’t have the marketing hype and associated price, I suggest that you try John Powers (& Sons) Irish Whiskey. Powers is better than both and it costs less.
Slancha!
Second on the Powers recommendation. It’s the most popular whiskey in Ireland, and there’s a good reason for it.
If I had a nickel for every Lib/Prog friend who has handicapped the ‘08 election by opining that “the country is ready for a woman or an African-American to be elected President,” I’d be waist deep in cases of numbingly expensive 50 year old Scotch!
Which, of course, I’d be drinking to extreme excess to dull the constant chatter of my Prog/Lib friends.
Cheers!
A lot of people drink Budweiser, but that doesn’t make it a good beer.
My personal fave. Although Bushmills (particularly Black Bush) and Jamesons are fine, Powers is more tasty and less cloying.
One of these days I’ll have to try Connemara, which is a peated Irish. I have a little keychain flask from them!
Barbara Boxer?! YOU did it?! You killed California, you BASTARD!S
I prefer Jameson’s to Bushmill’s, in fact, I have bad memories of Bushmill’s, but that be due to the fact that when I drank it I was still in the chug phase of life.
I think the tagline for Obama is, “…. and he’s BLACK!”, in other words, as a bonus.
Obama speaks well, hits the right notes, seems relaxed and together, and doesn’t come across as phony. That means he has all the charisma assets of JFK, and Reagan, but none of the under the breath “You fucking liar!” reactions we get when we seen (any) of the Clintons.
If the presidency were just a figurehead position, he’d get my vote right off. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have any credible military or foreign policy experience that I know of, and I’m not voting for anyone who doesn’t next year.
Steve:
Let’s not forget his virtual 100% liberal rating from the ADA. I hear you on policy experience but, in addition to the candidates stated core principles, I would add leadership qualities, something that has been lacking for several years. Presentation and speaking are at the bottom of the list.
Yes, I do like Bush and support him but communicating his message and rallying the country have not been his consistant strong points.
Powers is more popular precisely because it is cheaper. That’s not the same as saying it tastes better. I am a graduate (survivor?) of the famous Jameson Distillery taste test. Jameson went up against, Powers, Bushmills, some smokey bogwater strained through dirty socks some farmer used to wipe the snot off his cow’s nose they called Scotch (can you tell yet what I thought of it?) and some paint thinner that was touting itself as American Bourbon. My preferences were as follows:
1. Jameson
2. Powers
3. Bushmills
4. paint thinner (Jack Daniels)
5. smokey bogwater (who cares which one it was?)
In Georgia Jameson is $28, Glenfiddich is $40.
Sometimes I wonder why I live here.
I want to know how he got away without paying the parking ticket. My estimate of Obama just rose 100%
Syracuse wouldn’t let me graduate until I paid them their $5.00 for being in the commuter parking lot THREE minutes early during my last semester. While my wife in the hospital for five weeks, and my son at my sister’s house, and I was working full time and taking a half-time course load…
I will leave estimates of how receptive I am to their pleas for donations to your imagination.
I prefer Bushmill’s. Jameson’s is too oily.
Of the Irish blended, Tullamore Dew is on a par with Jameson’s, and I prefer it to Bushmill’s.
But then, there is no accounting for taste. And after 1/2 a bottle, who cares anyway?
Dirty Irishman:
Irish blended mixed with an equal part of Bailey’s over ice. Sippin’ goodness!
Yeah, but Farmer Joe’s talking about the Irish, not us Americans. The Irish taste for good liquor, is one of the best. That’s why you won’t see too many Irish drinking Budweiser. Hell these are the people who brewed Guiness for God’s sake!
True, but you will see the poor bastards drinking Smithwicks, which they also brew, and for which there is really no excuse.
