A Brief Respite From the Blog Wars (CraigC)

It’s not much, but in these days when it feels like everything is going to shit and the lunatics have taken over the asylum, it made me smile.  God bless you, Ronnie, we won’t forget.

Opponents of Poland’s former communist regime reportedly want to pay a posthumous homage to US President Ronald Reagan by erecting his statue in the place of a Soviet-era monument.

In an open letter to the mayor of the southwestern city of Katowice, the former anti-regime activists said that the staunchly anti-communist Reagan had been a “symbol of liberty,” the Polish news agency PAP reported.

And God bless the brave Polish people.

Top cavalry. Top fighter pilots. A brave and much maligned people. And it is good to see the man who did more than anyone to bring the Evil Empre to its knees honoured.

Blogs don’t have ‘wars’ – Blogs have tiffs.

  4. ThomasD says:

Probably wouldn’t hurt to mention Jan Sobieski at the Battle of Vienna.  The Poles seem to have a knack for being frontand center at history’s turning points.

  5. CraigC says:

That’s true, Thomas, including our own Revolutionary War.  And speaking of the Battle of Vienna, let’s not forget Charles Martel. France might be a basket case right now, but without The Hammer, you might be bowing towards Mecca five times a day.

  6. BumperStickerist says:

Well, it seems that Speaker Hastert’s plane could fly all the way to California without refueling:

Per the media accounts, Hastert used a C-20B

a minute and a half with Mister Google brings up this:

    http://www.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet.asp?fsID=87

    Range: C-20B, 4,250 miles

Gee – you’d think somebody in Speaker Pelosi’s staff might have thought to check that before telling the Speaker that the plane could fly farther than, say, to Illinois.

    or somebody at Media Matters

    or Kos

or, gee, ANYBODY in the media.

Also, there are 5 of these models based out of Andrews AFB.

That was some bad staff work there, Speaker.

    Bad staff work, indeed.

  7. BumperStickerist, my favorite part of that story is how she’s tried to make it out to be some Rumsfeldian conspiracy to make her look bad.

“replacing a monument to the Soviet troops who drove out the occupying Nazis in 1945”

    Hmmm.

  9. happyfeet says:

alphie – who do you suppose erected the monument to teh Soviet troops?

  10. alphie says:

    happy,

You don’t think the soldiers who died crushing the Nazis, the guys who killed 3,000,000 Polish Jews, deserve a statue?

  11. happyfeet says:

Good point alphie – I would have to check to see what the Soviet legacy in Poland was before I answered that. I’ve heard stories…

  12. Lurking Observer says:

    alphie:

You don’t think the people who aided and abetted the Nazis, the guys who helped divide Poland and therefore allowed for the killing of 3,000,000 Polish Jews, deserve a statue?

Or do you have some other explanation for the Russo-Germah Pact of 1939?

Perhaps it has to do w/ that British fear of invasion, or somesuch? Cogent observations of how foreign policy has downsides?

    Ooops, that’s only America, innit?

    L.O.,

Are we now going to hold soldiers responsible for the past and subsequent political actions of their governments?

I seem to remember the very same Ronnie propped up Saddam’s regime when it was in danger of collapsing.

No statues or honor for our troops who fought in OIF, then?

  16. Lurking Observer says:

    Alphie, you’re really pathetic here.

First, who put up the statue to the “Soviet soldiers”? The Polish government or the Soviet government? (Try Googling “Warsaw Pact”)

Second, under what duress did the Warsaw-Pact era Polish government have to “recognize” the “contributions” of the Soviet military in its “liberation”? (Try googling Gomulka, Gdansk, Solidarnosc.)

Third, if the Soviets created the situation where Poland is conquered by the Germans, then to what extent should they be honored at all? Is it proper to honor the getaway drivers of the bank robbery simply because they had a falling out with the rest of the gang that robbed the bank? (Try Googling Russo-German Non-Aggression Pact.)

Fourth, are you suggesting that you would put up a statue to the 3rd ID in Baghdad? Are you thinking that the Iraqi people should do so? Why do I doubt that?

Is widdle alphie still trying to form an argument with the adults? I think it’s past widdle alphie’s bed-time. Widdle alphie makes widdle “awguments,” but it’s time to go beddy-bye and let the adults talk, isn’t it, alphie?

You’ve got a biiiigggg day ahead of you, learning how to chew and walk at the same time!

  22. alphie says:

    L.O.,

Are we talking reality here, or is this just another pillow fight in the comfy realm of revisionist fantasy?

The Soviets could have driven the Nazis from their land, signed a peace treaty with the Hitler and left the liberation of Poland and the rest of Europe to…to whom exactly?

To the tiny Anglo-American force that showed up a few months before the Soviets rolled into Berlin?

That’s not even worth a giggle.

Yeah, the Soviets turned out to be bad rulers of Eastern Europe, but that shouldn’t diminish the sacrifices of the Soviet troops.

I know alphie would like to tawk about how Chamberlain was right, and Britain feared an invasion in 1938. And mummykins doesn’t have time right now to talk about Arctic convoys, strategic bombing campaigns, or numbers of divisions tied down.

Mummykins realizes that alphie is special, dear God, mummykins can never forget how special alphie is! But mummykins must really attend to the guests, so, please, alphie, stop embarrassing yourself and go to bed, alright?

And tomorrow, I pwomise, mummykins will be happy to listen to you rant, I mean discourse, on America and Japan and Iraq and all the wrongs that you’ve found in your “research” and “thinking.”

I don’t know, Alphie, you lackwit.  Who invaded Poland in 1939, who had a deal to co-invade and divide Poland in 1939?  Germany and …..?

Who let the Polish home forces be destroyed in Warsaw as they sat across the river and watched the Germans do that in 1944?  Who did that, and why would the Poles love the USSR?

Why?  Do you have an answer, you bloody lackwit?

    Why?

Good point. But that isn’t two Mobys, it’s one Moby with two nics, posting from 72.160.188.147

Don’t you silly bastards understand the intertubes?!?

  28. Lurking Observer says:

    Mikey!

Stop yellling at alphie this instant! You know that he’s special and can’t help piddling himself like that!

I know it’s hard, but alphie’s specialness is why he demands a statue to German soldiers for liberating Katowice (it had been Prussian at the time of its founding) from the Polish johnnie-come-latelies, just as expects the Poles to honor the Russians who put them in bondage in the first place. And you should know better than to expect him to maintain more than one pre-conceived notion in his addle-pated head at one time.

Really, I know it’s difficult at times, Lord knows I know it’s difficult, but we just have to make allowances for poor little alphie.

  29. Old Dad says:

    Dan,

Tread lightly here. Alphie is differently abled.

  30. alphie says:

Bathroom humor aside (I appreciate it, I have a young son),

The people who are down to arguing we should stay in Iraq because of the sacrifices our troops have made shouldn’t be merrily pissing all over the grave marker of a few million Nazi-killers just to score some minor political victory.

It makes you guys even less believable (if that’s possible).

  31. PMain says:

    alphie,

Don’t you have to go join the daily circle-jerk over at Sadly No! or something? Oh that’s right, they ignore you more than we do here… why’s that? You should probably speak to someone from Poland and ask them about what they think of Reagan, Thatcher or Pope John Paul. You’ll see an enthusiasm & gratefulness towards America that you should be your natural birth-right, not something to express only in disdain & disgust. It’s a pity that your political ideology prevents you from feeling the pride that comes from knowing your country is truly great & makes a difference throughout the world & I really pity you for that.

Its bad enough you mangle logic or history, seeing only that which verifies what you already believe, but to question the motives of a people expressing their gratitude for someone who decided to not just stand aside, but challenged real oppression of religion or free speech or of a people & region itself. Granted it’s not the imagined slights about the Bush Administration that you & your ilk scream about daily… it is & was real.

Nope, it’s more like how your side of spectrum ignores the opinions, feelings & thoughts from our troops doing the work over seas & in harm’s way today. Funny how their views over the War in Iraq, 9/11, Saddam, Al Qaeda, George Bush or the Democrats never get mentioned or considered by you at all. But if a columnist from the NYT quips about the costs of Iraq, if a Senator who voted for the War & tries to maintain the appearance of being concerned for the troops while questioning their actions, plans or intelligence, if 1 parent – out of the thousands that believe in the efforts that children gave their lives for -demands its end, if 1 soldier refuses to do his duty, while over a million have shouldered the responsibility & laid their lives on the line, your side manages to only recognize, support & cheer that effort alone. If one poll shows that the majority of people question the war, that’s the source you’ll use to fuel your righteous, holy-then-thou attitude, but you never mention or pay attention to the fact that the over-whelming majority of Americans actually in Iraq, & not on the media’s payroll, want to finish the fight, to rebuild Iraq, to free the civilians, not kill them & to finish the damn job. Those convenient little facts never enter into your reasoning, because they don’t reflect the positions you’d prefer.

You’re pathetic, but not because of what you believe or the fact you can’t argue or make a point, it is because you don’t have the guts to question your own beliefs. It’s because you cannot allow yourself to ever question yourself or admit you are wrong. It is so much easier to tear down those making an effort, when you make none yourself, to attack ideas presented, when you present nothing, to jump upon mistakes made by others, when you are too chicken-shit to offer solutions yourself. Hell, you can’t even manage to present what it is you believe or stand for, you only offer up how everyone else is wrong. If you do manage to offer a stance, it is always well after the fact – a dollar & day too short.

You have already shown an inability to answer direct questions to you, but answer me this: Why the fuck do you continue to come around here if you are so much more knowledgeable or smarter than the rest of us? Though since you’ve fail to ever make a point that hasn’t been dismantled by facts you cannot repute, we know that isn’t true. You don’t debate, you attempt to demean, you offer a different perspective, you offer critique, you don’t even bother to follow the thread or stay on topic. Either you are here to enlighten us or get attention. Since you have yet to enlighten anything, much less present a valid or coherent argument, it must be for the attention… right?

I suggest from now on, we the community alphie wishes only to poison, should ignore him outright & starve him of what he craves the most, ATTENTION. I for one, no matter how inane or pathetic he is, will ignore him outright.

  32. George S. "Butch" Patton (Mrs.) says:

    Tiny US/Anglo force:

90 US Divisions, one entire British generation, several Canadian divisions, two complete US air forces…

And would it be cruel to point out to Alphie that the Soviets were fighting a Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe THEY HELPED TO TRAIN following WWI?  Everything that happened to the Soviets in WWII came from their own actions.

  33. PMain says:

You don’t debate, you attempt to demean, you offer a different perspective, you offer critique, you don’t even bother to follow the thread or stay on topic.

Should read: “don’t offer a different perspective”

  34. Defense Guy says:

I think the statue would work best with Ronnie’s head placed on top of Rambo’s body.  Hell, we can even throw a couple of Soviet soldiers in there cowering at his feet, to placate certain sensibilities.

  35. BumperStickerist says:

I guess that part about Stalin and Hitler being allies at the start of WWII wasn’t taught at the Special School alphie attended.

Or the bit about how the two of them decided to divvy up Poland.

  36. ThePolishNizel says:

Oh my good Lord.  *lph** has a kid?  And a boy to boot.  The emasculation has already started, I guess.  Poor little guy.  Didn’t stand a chance.

Also, good to see Poland getting a little love from time to time.

  37. PMain says:

Also, good to see Poland getting a little love from time to time.

You know the cool thing is I spent a flight next to this 23 year old kid, reading a Bill O’Reilly book last weekend. 20+ years ago, his father left his family in Poland, moved here & started out washing windows in NYC, little by little he moved his family over here & now today owns several machinist shops in Northern California, has all of his family here & is a multi-millionaire. This kid moved here at 5 & loves this country. We spent the whole flight to San Francisco discussing the Solidarity Movement, the Russians & bagging on the liberals & on how clueless they are in regards to world or Poland for that matter. That hour & half conversation made it one of the best flights I have ever had & the glares we got exiting the plane were well worth it alone.

  38. Eno says:

I wasn’t going to comment on this column until I read alphie’s unbelievable comments. Even for a liberal, this is amazing hate and prejudice. The Soviets famously waited outside Warsaw while the Polish revolution was crushed in order to secure the country. The massacre of Polish officers was denied by the communists, until Reagan brought down the wall. The pure Hate of people like alphie for the downtrodden is truly frightening. Reagan’s policies saved the people of Eastern Europe. Latvia and Estonia already have monuments to RR.

  39. Jim in Chicago says:

    Wow, just wow.

Not only is A***ie completely ignorant of history, but it’s clearly never met a Polish person in its life.

And comparing American toops in Iraq to the Soviets—well I’m sure it thinks that’s a complement to the US soldier, but really. Unbelievable.

  40. Major John says:

I just missed a chance to go back to the ‘stan with a Polish BN as their CIMIC.  Good troops, when they send their best ones.

THey have some good engineers – cleared a God awful amount of nasty stuff near Bagram AF.

  41. 72.160.188.147 says:

72.160.188.147 Omigawd you busted me!  Now you have my SSN, my address, my phone #, and you will have to tell my employer I hate America!

  42. Melissa says:

I guess the Polish deserved to be raped by the Russians because they are stupid enough to support America today.

In Alphie’s world you’re either against America or you’re against America.

I know, it doesn’t make sense unless you’re a progressive.

  43. Lurking Observer says:

alphie, I think your son’s been posting here, b/c that’s the only explanation I can have for the kind of puerile nonsense that’s been coming up under your name.

I mean, having had your butt handed to you yet again on the history (perhaps you should not help your son w/ his homework), you again attempt to change the topic.

Really, alphie, is this the model you wish to show your son? “Okay ralphie, make fun of the people you disagree w/ by just making stuff up, and if you’re shown to be wrong, just say, ‘No, I’m right!’ and stamp on home!”

There’s another welfare kiddie on his way.

  44. Lurking Observer says:

Well, you see, Melissa, in alphie’s case, the West has never done anything right.

Among alphie’s more jaw-droppingly shtoopid comments are:

The US opening of Japan in 1853 is the reason North Korea developed nuclear weapons.

The British decision to appease Hitler was made b/c the British people were terrified of invasion by Germany (in 1938).

Britain was right in appeasing Hitler, b/c Britain stood alone and couldn’t defeat Germany on its own (the Empire, the Commonwealth, the Dominions? don’t ask)

Of course, more recently, General George Meade was the greatest general of all American history.

And this doesn’t even touch on the breathtakingly, astoundingly, stupendously stupid mile-high berm and hanging chad-like screens to defend Israel from rockets. (I hadn’t realized that was alphie, but it fits.)

When you come from that background, it probably seems like a genuine choice of hating America—or hating America (and Britain, and the West).

TW:anyone22, as in Anyone22 months old or more should recognize the futility of arguing with this level of stupidity.

  45. B Moe says:

72.160.188.147 Omigawd you busted me!  Now you have my SSN, my address, my phone #, and you will have to tell my employer I hate America!

The depressing thing is it looks like alphie may be one of the smart ones.

  46. Sir Bertram H. Ramsey (Adm.) says:

90 US Divisions, one entire British generation, several Canadian divisions, two complete US air forces…

Not to mention the 1,200 warships and 5,700 other vessels in the D-Day invasion fleet alone.

  47. alphie says:

Not sure I get your point, melissa.

I have nothing against the Poles, but I don’t think blowing up old statues because they don’t fit in with your current political philosophy is a good thing.

  48. Dan Collins says:

Then the Afghanistan Buddhas must have really pissed you off.

But you know, it’s funny how few monuments to George III we’ve got in the States.

  49. Lurking Observer says:

And, of course, statues of der Fuhrer and of Mussolini, and of Pinochet, and of Franco should be kept up as well?

The Chinese regularly write about how they set the Tibetans free from their medieval ideas. Statues should be erected to the valiant fighters of the People’s Liberation Army, to commemorate their liberation of the Tibetans. (The act of the government can’t sully the courage of the soldiers, after all.)

And, I presume, statues to German soldiers who freed eastern Poland from the rule of the Soviets, too, should be raised and kept erect?

    Whatever….

  50. Pablo says:

I guess we shouldn’t have pulled those Saddam statues down.

  51. Pablo says:

Now you have my SSN, my address, my phone #, and you will have to tell my employer I hate America!

Someone has an overinflated sense of self-importance. So now we get the liberal lunge from bad behavior direct to victimhood. “It’s your fault I’m a douchebag! Pity me!”

    What a farging tool.

  52. N. O'Brain says:

Well if you “have nothing against the Poles”, why are you willing to defend the Soviet Union turning Poland into a slave state for 40 or 50 years?

    Hmmmm?

    “Scratch a lefty, you’ll find a totalitarian.”

    -Kim du Toit

  53. Patrick Chester says:

    N O’Brain asks alphie:

Well if you “have nothing against the Poles”, why are you willing to defend the Soviet Union turning Poland into a slave state for 40 or 50 years?

Well, it probably wasn’t due to any personal feelings alphie had against Poland. Just blind devotion to the Worker’s Paradise.

  54. Rusty says:

I have nothing against the Poles, but I don’t think blowing up old statues because they don’t fit in with your current political philosophy is a good thing.

Hows about because thet’re just bad art.

  55. McGehee says:

I do have something against the Poles—‘cause they always have those strippers dancing on them, and they won’t dance on me for less than a hundred bucks.
