Defamation! [Dan Collins; UPDATED]

Yesterday, none of us managed successully to provoke a response out of the Feministing team regarding Samhita’s unretracted character assassination of the Duke Women’s Lacrosse Team’s defense of their falsely accused male counterparts.  Wendy McElroy did, though, and she’s “pissed the fuck off!” It appears that McElroy states that “even Feministing” has stopped characterizing the Duke debacle as the “Duke rape case,” and cites something from the comments, rather than the post.  I’m actually with Jessica here; I don’t think that reporters ought to imply that material from the comments derives from the bloggers.

STILL, I think it’s imperative that they own up to the fact that they’ve vilified people who somehow, despite their obviously tiny brains, were defending the truth.  You’ll find all kinds of clever people in the comments demonstrating why people as odious as the accused cannot possibly be defamed, but there you have it.

As for myself, I believe that these bloggers owe an apology to the Women’s Lacrosse Team, just as McElroy owes an apology to Feministing.  Only in the case of McElroy’s misattribution, McElroy (inadvertently?) ascribes more reasonableness to them than they deserve, whereas Samhita’s imputations are insulting, vile and debasing.

UPDATE: Commenter Q30 notes that we oughtn’t forget this one, from Amynda: Duke U. Womyn’s Lacrosse Team = Mindless Stepford Wives

Thanks.  Don’t know how I could have missed it.  A taste, from beneath a picture of the Women’s Lacrosse Team:

Do you see a group of independent-thinking college womyn who know how to stand-up for what they believe in?

NO!! You see disgustingly WEAK and MINDLESS fools who collude in their own oppression while silencing noble exotic dancers of color!!

Hoo, boy.

But wait!  This is a send-up from Feministing.ORG, not Feministing.com!  And it’s funny!

More stooges, but not of the patriarchy.

Early humans dodge a bullet.

The Man represses Muslims:

Don’t stone women to death, burn them or circumcise them, immigrants wishing to live in the town of Herouxville in Quebec, Canada, have been told.

The rules come in a new town council declaration on culture that Muslims have branded shocking and insulting.

Fucking HOAs.

Wait til Charles Johnson hears about this. And that Goldstein fella.

  2. FabioC. says:

Anyone using “womyn” with a straight face is barely worth noticing in my book.

  3. Dan Collins says:

    That was a send-up, Fabio.

  4. Boss429 says:

I think someone got that from “wild stallyns”, Bill & Teds band…party on dudes

  5. Pablo says:

Actually, that came from a desire to not have “men” in the word “women”. Or, from a need to be vehemently special and defiantly unique, if you will.

  6. Dan Collins says:

I think it’s the latter, Pahbleau

  7. Pablo says:

I notice that Jessica doesn’t mention whether she considers it appropriate to continue calling it “The Duke rape case”.

    Well, do ya?

  8. furriskey says:

I can’t decide whether using Herstory for History is stupider than spelling women womyn or the other way around.

This wouldn’t matter but I am starting to suffer from sleep deprivation as a consequence and if that goes on I may lose the will to live again.

  9. Dan Collins says:

    Take back the sleep!

  10. furriskey says:

Even the popular gender feminist site Feministing had conceded “it probably isn’t appropriate to continue calling this the ‘Duke rape case’.”

That’s funny, because I’m pretty sure it was a commenter that wrote this–not us. Congrats, noname: Fox News loves you!

I’d like to think this was a mistake (despite the fact that it’s pretty damn clear who is blogging and who is commenting) so I’ve emailed McElroy about a retraction. But still–ugh.

So this libellous cow wants a retraction from someone who has suggested that her site no longer regards it as appropriate to continue calling this The Duke Rape Case.

So what are we to conclude? That this self important wombat wants it to be known that she still thinks that it IS appropriate? Jesus H Christ on a velocipede.

    Pahbleau

Getting the hang of this:  Beeyotches. Usage:  Feministing is full of beeyotches?

Oh, and about being quote, pissed the fuck off, would that be profanity as the (other) sign of a small mind or profanity as the sign of righteous ‘bat indignation?  While we’re understanding language and appearances and all.  With Pretty Boy Edwards swinging pink too, it’s time to get the terms clear…

  12. furriskey says:

Muslims have branded shocking and insulting.

Having your clit dug out by a mullah with a chisel can be quite shocking, too.

  13. FabioC. says:

“send-up from” as “parody of”? I wasn’t familiar with that expression.

  14. FabioC. says:

Ah, now I have worked out my comprension issues, and can fully enjoy the post.

  15. NO!! You see disgustingly WEAK and MINDLESS fools who collude in their own oppression while silencing noble exotic dancers of color!!

These unthinking idiots are so deeply manipulated by Patriarchy that they don’t comprehend the extent to which white, middle-class college-womyn are victimized in 21st century America. The Patriarchy has duped them all into standing in solidarity with the vilest creatures in the whole universe: white accused rapists!!

Do people really talk like this?  I mean, I thought this was just in the movies.  Jebus.  While reading that I seriously considered that the whole site was a joke.

    Apparently not.

Hard-core uber feminists really are crazy.

  16. Pablo says:

While reading that I seriously considered that the whole site was a joke.

    Apparently not.

That one is. Kinda tough to tell sometimes, huh?

  17. Dan Collins says:

Fabio, I didn’t have “from” in there, did I?

Christopher, that’s a parody you’re referring to, but yes, some of them do speak that way, which is what makes the parody so funny.  Or tragic.  Depending on your point of view.

  18. Jonathan says:

http://feministing.org/ seems to be a really humorous spoof site of the excesses of college level feminist discourse. The other Feministing.com seems more serious and done less for giggles.

  19. Sherard says:

Do you see a group of independent-thinking college womyn who know how to stand-up for what they believe in?

Wow.  She’s got to be one of THE dumbest women going.  I don’t believe there is any serious woman on this planet that doesn’t recognize that women who engage in sports, and Duke is near as high as you can go in college athletics, are some the the strongest, most independent of them all.  They don’t need their opinions handed to them by their feminist betters, and I can guarantee they would be perfectly happy to tell this moron right where to stick her dumbass opinion.

    What an idiot.

  20. The Lost Dog says:

Feministing.org is a great site, but I could not blame anyone who could not decipher it as a parody.

    It’s that good.

  21. Veeshir says:

I’m dumbfounded and I have to wonder if it really is a parody. I saw this quoted above noble exotic dancers of color!! and I figured Dan had made it up for comedic purposes or something but no, that quote is lifted directly from that page.

How…… ummmmm, thinking of an adjective….. okay, got it.

How braindead-lefty do you have to be to write that line?

Either very braindead-lefty or Jim Treacher or FrnakJ.

  22. PMain says:

The other Feministing.com seems more serious and done less for giggles.

    should read

The other Feministing.com seems more serious and done less for giggles intentionally.

  23. PMain says:

    or perhaps: ironically

  24. countryKyle says:

Following Samhita’s irresponsible characterization of the Women’s Duke lacrosse team, Samhita apparently fell victim to a number of racist and sexist remarks.  HERE is where Jessica pleads to fellow “feminist” bloggers to demonstrate solidarity in support of Samhita by leaving positive feedback in the comments section of the notorious post. Why is this extent of productive solidarity among self-proclaimed feminists, not only acceptable, but encouraged, whereas, the solidarity among female athletes in support of their male counterparts, who fell victim to similar racism/sexism, disdainful?
