Egypt Arrests al-Jazeera Reporter [Dan Collins]

This is interesting.  Egyptian authorities have arrested an al-Jazeera reporter for having staged “documentary reconstruction[s]” of prisoner torture:

A journalist working for Arabic TV news channel al-Jazeera has been arrested in Egypt for allegedly fabricating videos of police torturing suspects.

Huweida Taha Metwalli was stopped on her way to Qatar and 50 video tapes were found in her luggage, the Egyptian interior ministry said.

She is reportedly charged with “tarnishing Egypt’s reputation and harming Egyptian national interests”.

Al-Jazeera said the tapes showed a “documentary reconstruction” by actors.

To be clear, though, the videotape of Imad Kabir appears to have been taken by one of his “interrogators.” On balance, I’d have to say that on first reflection my sympathies are with the reporter, though it depends on the nature of the “reconstruction[s]” and their basis in fact.

RELATED: Can’t take a joke:

A court in Casablanca has given two Moroccan journalists suspended sentences of three years for defaming Islam and breaching public morality.

The journalists’ weekly magazine, Nichane, had published an article entitled How Moroccans laugh at religion, sex and politics.

More privately, is my guess.

Notice how when Al-Jazeera is actually going to do something good – they get tackled.  When they are going to just flog some old anti-US or anti-Israel stuff – no problems.

I feel bad for them with this Egyptian security apparatus mess.  Those folks are rat bastards and a half.
