My first brief conversation with the severe ear infection I developed last evening, which has my entire left ear completely stopped up

me: “Cut it out, would you?  It hurts.”

severe ear infection: “Got any antibiotics?”

me: “Not here in the house, no.”

severe ear infection: “Then bite me.”

  1. Try a nasal decongestant; they often unstop ears, too.

  2. TODD says:

Eat more red pills…..You’ll forget about that bitch of an ear infection in no time…..

  3. Dan Collins says:

Yeah, and garlic oil.  You’ve got some garlic oil around, haven’t you, Jeff?

  4. Jeff Goldstein says:

This is pretty bad.  I haven’t had an ear infection since swimmer’s ear when I was, like, 10.

I tried some Sudafed Sinus—did nothing.  I don’t have a fever, but I feel a little bit disoriented.

Sadly, my wife is out of town on business and I’m with the little guy.  And I don’t feel comfortable enough to drive.  So I’m going to have to suck it up and hope the infection doesn’t spread to any major organs.

If it is indeed an infection.  It came on very suddenly last evening.

  5. TODD says:

No ear drops in the house?

  6. Jeff Goldstein says:

I tried using Hydrogen Peroxide last night.  That didn’t work either.

My kid had a birthday party the other day, then we did some babysitting for a neighbor’s kids. Could be I caught something.

What’s troubling is that I generally don’t get sick.

  7. seawitch says:

Try eye drops(can use in ears but don’t ever use ear drops for eyes!) or warm some olive oil. Exercising can also help.

  8. Jeff Goldstein says:

I have a 6 day a week lifting schedule, but today is my off day.  Generally I hop on the Stair Stepper for a half hour to an hour, so I might try that later.  Right now I feel like I might fall off.

I’m going to rest for a while, then go pick up some ear drops. We had some before we moved, but we must have tossed it because it had expired or something.

Don’t know about the warm olive oil:  how would that work, exactly.

Might try eating some garlic oil, though.  I do take a few tablespoons of fish oil daily.  Maybe I should just try dumping some in my ear.

  9. ahem says:

Try applying a heat pack or hot water bottle to it. If you get the blood running through it, it may clear quicker. The best OTC med I’ve found for pain is Excedrin for migraines. It’s marketed a couple of different ways. It’s more than usually potent, but no cocktails when it’s in your system.

    BECAUSE OF THE CHILDREN!

  10. Dan Collins says:

No, Jeff.  Dropper a couple of drops of garlic oil into your ear.  I’m not generally into home remedies, but my wife forced me to use this one and it worked.

  11. mojo says:

severe ear infection: And by the way – here, have some vertigo.

  12. Mikey NTH says:

Whatever you do, don’t use the new cordless drill and the stainless steel bits.  You may at times think seriously about it, but it’ll only end in tears.  Trust me on this one.

  13. Major John says:

I would prescribe a blous dose of whisky, but you said you were alone with the little guy.

Hmmm… sorry, outside of antibiotics I have no other answer…

  14. seawitch says:

Sorry, should have been more clear about the olive oil.  After you warm it up, use a dropper to place about 6-7 drops in your ears.  My doctor recommended it.  Serves two purposes, helps break-up any crud in your ear and also soothes the pain.  It does work.

  15. Call the pediatrician, tell him Satch has an ear infection and can he call something in.  Chances are he’ll do it.

I got a van-load of kids and that’s what I do when I’m sick and know what I have.  Otherwise I gotta go in and sit and wait.

I was worried about dosage, but if you can choke that pink crap down, you’ll be fine.

The side-effects are pretty amazing too.  I could jack up a car with my penis for a week after, but I couldn’t stop shitting my pants.

  16. Dg says:

First of all be sure it’s an infection.

Tug on your earlobe, near the hole in your head (you know what I mean), try different angles of pulling, if it hurts like hell… you probably have an infection and will need to see the doc, or rough it out.

Anything else is really just a way to deaden/mollify the pain.

If you can just tough it out.. recent studies have found antibiotics aren’t really all that great for ear infections… they’ll cure themselves in a week or so.

Yawning can help drain, if your eustachian tube is plugged up (virtigo might indicate this). Exercising may help agitate the fluid and break up ‘chunks’ (ugh) but you still have to free up the drain…

Gargling with warm salt water might help a bit in this regard. Small amounts of whiskey wouldn’t be bad either (but it’s just so hard to stop….).

Aspirin, is an anti-inflamatory, that will help (or ibuprofin, but NOT tylenol).

Also try laying down with the bad ear up… that might help it drain too.. if you hear things swishing around in there (or bubbling, oozing, and other fluidic sounds)… that is also a clear sign of infection.

DO NOT PUT hydrogen peroxide, or carbomide preroxide in an infected ear!!!!

And of course.. keep the damn q-tips out of there too (especially if it is tender and sore, that means it’s probably swollen and the q-tip… well it would be like a plow… going the wrong way).

or maybe I should just say:

    “EAR ACHE MY EYE!!!”

mama talka to me try to tell me how to live…

    but I digress…..

  17. Jeff Goldstein says:

I got my doctor to call something in, but my wife is out of town and she has the insurance card.

That, combined with the fact that this thing is getting worse by the second (the pain is nearly unbearable now)—and that tomorrow we’re supposed to get yet another storm, which could lat for five days—is driving me to despair.

  18. Jeff Goldstein says:

NOW you tell me about the Hydrogen Peroxide and the Q-tips.

I hope antibiotics work, is all I have to say.  Because this thing is hurting like you would not believe.

  19. Man, I’m sorry.

I hope you don’t get to this point, but speaking from experience when the drum bursts it’ll feel a hell of a lot better.

And your hearing will get back to near normal in a year or two, mine did.

Can your wife fax the card in?  Can you both be at a Wallgreens at the same time?

    Do you own a gun?

  20. TODD says:

“I hope you don’t get to this point, but speaking from experience when the drum bursts it’ll feel a hell of a lot better. “

Stop it please LMC… I am still recovering from the Jackstanding penis, pants shitting comment.

    Jeff,

Before the weather gets worse, get down to the pharmacy or the ER. The last thing you want to do is pass out from the pain with Satchel running around….

  21. Pablo says:

Yes, get the antibiotics now, some way, somehow. They’re probably not terribly expensive anyway, so don’t let a lack of insurance hold you back. Those drugs are your new best friend, in fact they’re your only friend.

I haven’t had one of those kind of ear infections in 10 years or so, but I’ve had them. Childbirth looks like a picnic compared to that kind of skull splitting pain.

  22. Joel says:

severe ear infection: “Then bite me.”

Can you really do that? I tried for an hour and couldn’t reach.

  23. McGehee says:

Last time I had an ear infection say, “Bite me,” I poked it with my elbow.

In retrospect, not such a good idea.

  24. Joe says:

Whatever you do, don’t use the new cordless drill and the stainless steel bits.

Nonsense. Not only is this treatment the quickest-acting, but one of the beneficial side effects is that you won’t be able to hear yourself scream.

Over the humming noise of the drill, I mean.

  25. DWB says:

If the infection is in the inner ear then you need an oral antibiotic.  External ABX liquids work too they just may not penetrate as well.

Since you are experiencing vertigo then you probably have an inner ear infection.

The inner ear canal runs from the ear to the throat where it drains.  Do you feel soreness under your ear where the jaw and lobe meet?  The inner ear canal is inflamed if so.

Try some ibuprofen or anti-inflammatory of choice for the pain.

Hot tea’s like peppermint help move congestion as do fluids in general.  Also, some Mucinex tabs are a good choice too.

I get ear infections towrads the end of many dive trips.  After a week of equalizing it tends to push bacteria from the throat up in to the ear canal.  The pressure irritation cause micro bleeds in the canal and the bacteria have a party…..

    Hope you feel better.

Oh yeah, try some Dramamine for the vertigo.  Or see if the doc will order Meclizine too.

Wrist pressure works like a charm for others.

    Hope you feel better.

  26. Timmer says:

    Right ear or left ear?

‘Cuz if it’s the right ear than it’s just being gay and flaming and listening to anything other than German Techno circa 1993 ought to calm it down.

  27. DWB says:

They’re probably not terribly expensive anyway, so don’t let a lack of insurance hold you back.

Certain abx are dirt cheap.  Penicillins or Bactrim (sulfa) for example.

Cortisporin ear drops is probably the cheapest drop I can think of.  It costs me less than $2.00 a bottle.

Whereas, a bottle of Cipro HC Otic costs me over $75.00 and other oral abx can run over $100 too.  The patient cost being higher of course.

So, I’d mention price to the doc beforehand as he may assume insurance covereage.

The cortisporin drop (or gentamicin) and/or some amoxicillin should do the trick.

Or you can pay cash full and submit the paper bill to your insurance later for reimbursement.  That works too.

    Ciao…

  28. Jeff Goldstein says:

Thanks. Got some Amoxicillin.  The 3 Ibuprofin I took lessened the pain considerably.  But the ear is still stuffed.  I was able to use my wife’s insurance card, so it only cost me a ten spot.

And yeah, I had soreness under the ear along the jawline and a bit on the neck.  Also, a bit next to the ear canal opening high up on the cheek.  My ear would throb when I turned my head or bent over.

    My left ear.  Timmer.

Which, what is it with the left and sickness, anyway?

    I KID!

  29. buddy says:

    Youngsters.

1t white vinegar mixed with 3t warm water, use like ear drops, leave in ear several minutes, then drain.  Repeat.

Bacteria don’t do well in an acidic environment.

    It’s cheap, too.

  30. TODD says:

Plus you have that “Fresh Feeling” like a spring breeze…..

  31. MayBee says:

A little warm air from the blow-dryer can feel good on a painful ear.

  32. Grouch says:

Think I read somewhere that you can pour gunpowder in the offending ear. Just be careful when you light it off. You could scorch something and then there would be trouble when the missus gets home. The tot would be entertained also as a side benefit.

  33. magnolia says:

Jeff, you said you were able to use the insurance card, but for future reference, if you can’t, you can pay the retail price and then have your wife contact her HR about getting reimbursed for the difference between what you paid and the normal copay. Sometimes you can get cash back at the pharmacy, sometimes you have to mail in the receipt. It’s worth it if you end up with a really expensive drug. Hope you feel better.

  34. Jeff Goldstein says:

    Thanks!

  35. A couple of years ago, I had my first ear infection since I was a young’un, 20-25 years ago.  And yes, it hurt.  Not constantly, but about once per hour it would feel like someone was stabbing me in the side of the head.  I knew why kids cried at that point.

I did use whiskey to help at one point, too.  Drank enough to pass out.  Did wonders.

  36. Jeff Goldstein says:

I just pulled the equivalent of two large devotional candles out of my ear, and it’s still stuffed up.

I’m beginning to think I was violated in my sleep by Gumby.

  37. bex says:

Thanks, Fellows, for the laughs. Truly hilarious. I had searched google for “olive oil in the ear” to find out if my Italian relatives were crazy or if it was really reasonable to put it in my one year olds ear. Somehow I landed on this page. Something tells me I’ll be back to visit. And I hope that ear cleared up for you, Jeff (without further Gumby intrusions, of course). And LMC, I hope you – and your penis – are back to normalcy. Bex

  38. dkcpwkvmld says:

Hello! Good Site! Thanks you! odabroltsam

  39. susy says:

You can prevent ear infection with chewing gum is recommended as it is known to help relieve pressure in the ear as well as creating good saliva flow. Chewing gum usually works a treat during plane flights when ears are affected during the landing procedure in particular.
