This Pashtun tradition goes way back. Women are for babies, but boys are for love. They even have love songs celebrating this. Or at least that’s what I read in Rolling Stone a few years ago.
The little boy goats, or the little girl goats?
In one of the fine histories of Africa by Alan Moorehead–The White Nile or The Blue Nile–he describes the habits of the so-called ‘Musselman’ (Muslim?) warriors in Northern Africa in the 19th century. Homosexuality and ‘special’ friendships, like those of the Greeks, was rampant.
In fact, I had a couple of gay friends back in the 1970s who recounted to me how the Morrocans they visited had dinner parties at which their wives and children were present, yet they openly retired from the party peiodically to carry on with men. Their wives were expected to ‘suck it up’ so to speak.
I’m not sure they have a preference. The men, not the goats. I’m pretty sure the goats prefer other goats.
Explains why the little fella’s are so easily convinced to strap exploding stuff to themselves…..

I think it was The White Nile. Great description of General George “Chinese” Gordon fighting the Mahdi at Khartoum. In fact, one of the most stirring images of the late 19th century is General Gordon standing at the top of the staircase as the Mahdi’s forces overtook him.
stace – you are correct. There were Afghan militia commanders that had a couple too many 12-14 year old boys in their “service” for comfort.

And, to correct myself, it was the Mamelukes, not the ‘Musselman’ who were homosexual. It probably appears in The Blue Nile, which covers the topic of Egypt in the 19th century.
