– “Samson and Delilah” – hands down. This epic celluloid collossus had it all. Love, passion, anger, fear, faith, religious fervor, hope and despair. The quintessential heart throb male and female leads in the persons of Victor Mature, and Hedy Lamarr, under the expert hand of that all-time hall of fame director, Cecil B. Demille. I rate this film as the “Casa Blanca” of its genre’.
– And not that it matters, but I’m wearing the usual Sunday getup of pith helmet, scoobie-doo shades, and camo Jodhpurs, with crop, the sort of ensamble I imagine Demille sporting in ‘49, when he made this classic….
….People crushed under falling Pillars, combatents smashed under the wheels of Chariots, Lions and tigers, dogs and cats playing, men dancing with their wives….fire and brimstone disasters of biblical proportions….. Fresh Kreplach being consumed in copious quantities….Nnnnnngggggg
“Cubits”…. wasn’t that a former video arcade game, starring “little short men”?…..”short little men?”….. “men in shorts”?….Kim jong-Il widdle-slong?….”…Missle erections lasting less than 6 seconds require immediate medical attention….”
In regards to the old gladiator movies then it has to be Demetrius and the Gladiators by quite a wide margin. It was released in the mid 1950s as a sequel to the boring movie The Robe. But this sequel delivered the goods unlike the earlier over pius film. It starred Susan Hayward as evil empress Messalina and Victor Mature as the errant christian she forces to fight in the arena for her pleasure.
At first he refuses but events finally have him entering the arena – it was worth all Messalina’s efforts because he kills five gladiators – count ‘em – right of!
Of course – being hollywood – our hero finally regains his faith and renounces his violent ways but not before there has been a lot of very suggestive dallying with Ms Hayward.
I first saw this at 13 and – needless to say – it brought a “big” response from me.

Samson and Delilah is hard to top, but I have a sentimental fondness for Quo Vadis and the brilliant performance of Peter Ustinov as Nero.
…I left out intigue, murder, and treachery….
…and sex…
…and Narrcissism…
…and betrayal…
…and clandistine haircuts…
and, and….Hedy was even working on an invention for radio during the war as a spy for the Army…….hand me the popcorn….
I asked Joey if he liked gladiator movies, but he never answered me. Also, I should add he has never seen a grown man naked…

Men dancing with their wives? Weird. I’ll have to check it out, BBh.
I’ve always wondered about the expression, “of biblical proportions”; does that mean measured in cubits?
