Now Do We ALL Get Reparations? [Dan Collins]

You know that Fox News “Around the World in 80 Seconds”?  BFD.  Tigerhawk illustrates the history of Europe, Asia and North Africa in 90 seconds, and you don’t have to hear Shep Smith voice-over news of the strange.  In my opinion the Romans had the best Empire in terms of location, even though the Mongols had the biggest one.  Modern European Imperialism is really kinda m’eh, when you get right down to it.

  1. There were empires and there were empires.

Never since the heroic days of Greece has the world had such a sweet, just, boyish master. It will be a black day for the human race when scientific blackguards, conspirators, churls, and fanatics manage to supplant him.

    — George Santayana, “The British Character”, in Soliloquies in England, 1922

    On the other hand…

The British Empire is the great engine of evil for the weak races now existing in the world–not that we are worse than the French or Italians or Americans–indeed, we are less actively destructive–but we do it over a far wider area and more successfully.  I should be delighted to see England stripped of her whole foreign possessions.  We were better off and more respected in Queen Elizabeth’s time, the ‘spacious days’, when we had not a stick of territory outside the British Islands, than now, and infinitely more respectable.  The gangrene of colonial rowdyism is infecting us, and the habit of repressing liberty in weak nations is endangering our own.  I should be glad to see the end.
