BREAKING:  Israel Massing Troops for Ground Push into Lebanon? (UPDATED)

If given the go ahead by the Israeli government today, Israeli troops could begin a push all the way to the Litani River.  This would be a follow up to three days of Israeli commando teams moving north into Lebanon along the coast—and comes amid reports that Israel shot down Hezbollah rockets headed for Tel Aviv.

Keep an eye on Pajamas Media for a roundup.

update:  Israel shot down what they are saying was an Iranian made drone headed for Tel Aviv, not a Hezbollah rocket.

  1. Well, if it’s happening, it’s about time.  Some of us—both raw, ignorant amateurs like me and folks who actually know what they’re talking about—have been saying that the push to the Litani is a must-do.

  2. Hosedragger says:

And then keep heading north through Syria, hang a right and straight on through to Tehran.  They want the Israelis out?  What better way than to set up shop in that Neo-Hitler’s front dining room. I only hope we continue to let them run the show.  It’s great to watch a country that understands this war against Islamo-fascist imperialism and actually is doing something other than paying it lip-servic.  If only our own people were as wise.

  3. Rusty says:

They should start preppinig the Bekaa Valley now.

  4. Nah.  Grabbing land isn’t the idea, and occupying the Bekaa would be a nightmare; it should be somebody else’s nightmare.

But the Litani makes a decent border, and while it would be a bit of a stretch, it’s possible that a viable pocket Litani Lebanese state could be viable, particularly once the civil war north of the Litani resumes.  (And it pretty much has to, Lebanese denial to the contrary.)

  5. Pablo says:

Meanwhile, the Lebanese government keeps balking at the cease fire.

    Alrighty then. War it is.

Though it sure would be nice to roll through and see what sort of things might be stashed in the neighborhood.

They’re trying to Cannae the hezzys.

tw: how many times has THAT happened?

Not OT, I hope: Meanwhile, Drudge is breaking a horrible story from the Wall Street Journal about Bernard Lewis’ prognostications for August 22. Apocalypse for Israel?

“This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind.”

N.O. Brain – ssshhhh.  They may be reading.

Actually, the IDF doesn’t need to be tricky, the Hezzies have been drawn into a public stance of “we are winning, the Zionists are losing”.  If the IDF sets up a line there, it kind of makes the Hez claims look damned foolish.  I believe Wretchard at Belmont Club may have called this type of stratagem some time back.

Remember, info ops, the War of Perception, whatever you want to call it, cuts both ways.  The Hez have had the press dancing to their merry tune so far, but now this may come back to bite them.  The invincible and gallant resistance fighters can’t cede that much of Lebanon (which loves them and supports them, of course) to the evil Zionist invaders now can they?

Could be yet another guerilla/irregular force that decides to have a stand up fight over a patch of ground and gets plastered by a stronger, larger, better equipped and disciplined regular army.  They can only hide behind the civilian populace so long…

  9. They can only hide behind the civilian populace so long…

Perhaps. But they can hide behind the press forever.

  10. Gary says:

    Major John,

Please—what type of warfare are the Hezzies conducting—A or B?

A—military and paramilitary operations conducted in enemy-held or hostile territory by irregular, predominantly indigenous forces.

B—unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.

Check the JEL for the answer.

  11. jeff, drone flightpaths are adjustable in flight.

there is no way you can say that drone was headed for tel aviv.

  12. Jeff Goldstein says:

I didn’t say it.  The news report I saw it on did.
