Twin Towers movie trailer

Craig Caughman emails:  “Utter bilge.  Saccharine, maudlin cliches. Contrast this with United 93.”

Well, I would, but I haven’t seen United 93.  But for those of you who have, here’s your chance to compare the two.

  1. dorkafork says:

It’s not shown in the trailer, but Cuba Gooding Jr. plays a mentally retarded janitor who is saved by a firefighter.  A firefighter that later says “I thought I saved you from that building, but really, you’re the one who saved me!”

  2. alan says:

Well, what do we expect from Castro-sympathizing Stone? I’ll be surprised if America isn’t portrayed as bringing it upon herself.

  3. ed says:

    Hmmm.

Now if Oliver Stone had done a Twin Towers movie combined with Scooby Doo.

    Now that’s fucking ART!

  4. tim maguire says:

For most of the trailer I thought “boring, harmless chick-flick” but then Nicholas Cage said something about seeing the light and, yes, utter bilge. The smoke didn’t clear for weeks. Even if he were alive, he’d be too busy coughing up a lung to notice any lights.

  5. noah says:

United 93 was like a roller-coaster ride to Hell…intermingled with a sense of outrage at how unprepared we were. And then it was over.

If this trailer portends the movie then I will most likely pass.

  6. bgates says:

I think anyone watching this can’t help but be reminded of another, much better movie.

Because in a shot of a city street, you can clearly see a poster for ‘Zoolander’.

With that choice, I’ll give my money to Ben Stiller.

  7. Dan Collins says:

Twin Towers crash and burn at box office.

Twin Towers collapses at box office.

Toxic fumes from Twin Towers may affect Hollywood for decades, say experts.

Stoned by critics, stoned Stone stews.

    Firefighters burned by “asinine” portrayal.

    The Towering Purgatorio.

    Add your own.

  8. McGehee says:

Now if Oliver Stone had done a Twin Towers movie combined with Scooby Doo.

“Hey, there’s a jet airliner headed this way!”

    “Ruh-roh!”

  9. Dan Collins says:

    Jinkies.

    Zoiks.

  10. anomdebus says:

They are totally trying to cash in on the box office success of the Two Towers, its sickening.

    wink

  11. norm2121 says:

Well, Stone is a complete fuckhead, but the true outrage is that we haven’t seen ANY footage to remind us of 9/11 WTC. Even if he shows President Bust pushing the plunger for a timed implosion, we need to see this day again and again. I’ll go see it, though I don’t hold much hope for a balanced portrayal, and post my opinion after.

    TW: moral. Hmmm…

  12. Lost Dog says:

Oliver Stone and the Twin Towers????

    BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH….

    OWWWW! My stomach hurts…

  13. Darleen says:

I saw United 93 and it works so well, I mean it really grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go, for every reason that I’m suspicious of the Stone flic.

93 is wholly unsentimental. As much as I’ve enjoyed a lot of Cage’s acting, I don’t WANT to think I’m watching “actors” in this setting.

And from the trailer…they’re caught in the lobby after the collapse of the WTC? And we can see them?

Um, anyone who saw this, aired only once on CBS, six months after 9/11 and NEVER again, understands that Twin Towers will pale by comparison.

I hate to give any $$$ to weird Stone, but I might only go see this movie to be able to make a full comparison.

  14. Lost Dog says:

    Oliver Stone? The Twin Towers?????

    BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH….

    OWWW! My stomach hurts…

  15. Lost Dog says:

Oops! Sorry for the double post, but your little TW nazi told me that I had entered wrongly. He needs a talking to, Jeff.

  16. ed says:

    Hmmmm.

“Ok Scooby and Shaggy.  You lure Mohammed Atta from the cockpit…”

“Would you prevent 9/11 for a Scooby Snack?”

“Would you prevent 9/11 for 2 Scooby Snacks?”

    “Roh boy!”

As stupid as this sounds.  It would probably make a better movie than anything Stone could have dreamed up.

  17. Rob B. says:

At no point in United 93 did I feel like the director or the actors were trying to make me believe who they were. At no time did I feel I was being sold a line or an agenda or a implication of anything other than what happened that day. It felt like they just tried to relay the facts and the the actions of the people on United 93 speak for themselves.

This, if the trailer is any indication, is the exact opposite. The movie should be called “9-11 Whore” because that’s what Stone wants to do with people’s raw emotion on this subject: Whore their desire to deal with the insane events that day into box office dollars for him and his studio.

While I’m know that United 93 makes money, I don’t fell like they made that movie just to make money.

Stones trailer doesn’t instill me with the same confidence.

  18. McGehee says:

Okay, Lost Dog, you succeeded in making the screen too wide even for me.

    No Scooby snack for you.

  19. ”…We’d have gotten away with it too Shaleem….if it wasn’t for those meddling passengers”

TW: Rest in peace to the flight of 93….the bravest of the brave….)

  20. norm2121 says:

Just after my flight from India landed in Newark this past Monday morning, the flight attendant called out: “We’ve found a passport on a seat. Will Mr. Mohammed Atta (and proceeded to spell it out) please come forward?” No trace of irony at all – and no passenger reaction How quickly we forget. Except my blood ran cold, and my daughter looked at me with just a trace of fear and sadness in her eyes.

  21. Dave Munger says:

I heard Stone didn’t write this, they just brought him in to direct or something, so it might be OK.

  22. Nolo Contendere says:

Jeez, it’s an Oliver Stone movie and someone asks if it’s good?  Personally, I’d rather invite Thersites over for an evening of backgammon and semiotics than watch anything directed by Oliver Stone.  And I’d rather have an inflamed anal fissure than talk to Thirsty.

TW=turned.  Unless Oliver has turned in his communist party membership card and mysteriously gotten some talent somewhere.

  23. Agree with Nolo; I’ve never been impressed with Stone’s work. The worst to date has probably been Any Given Sunday wherein he beats the viewer over the head with his (Stone’s) POV.

Worst offender? When Foxx and Pacino are arguing, and Stone keeps cutting (CLOSE UP) to the movie playing on the TV; the Ben Hur chariot race. See, Stone wants us to really get that this is a tough, merciless fight between coach and player. Feh.

Re: the trailer: syrupy music, obviously “dramatic” shots of Cage looking up -apprehensively- at the Towers, wives/girlfriends hugging sheets sadly.

    It’s a good thing I’m not diabetic.

Code word: than, as in United was better than this.

  24. McGehee says:

Sounds like Ishtar was better than this.

  25. jessie says:
