Continental Embrace (from the protein wisdom “tolerance” series)

From CBS Sportsline, “The Ugly Side Of The ‘Beautiful Game’”:

Warming up on the touchline, a black player jogs toward fans at the Parc des Princes soccer stadium. As he gets closer, a barrage of monkey chants explodes, “OOOH! OOOH! OOOH!” and racist insults fill the air.

Such scenes are increasingly common at the home stadium of Paris Saint-Germain, or PSG, one of France’s top soccer teams, and are finding racist expression in elite soccer leagues across Europe, raising fears that a global sport that calls itself “the Beautiful Game” is getting uglier.

Many of the fans yelling insults are members of hooligan gangs that prowl the stadium grounds on match day, looking for a rumble with black and Arab members of a multiethnic rival gang.

Yet interviews with gang members and repeated visits to PSG games found that racist hooligans operate openly and with almost total impunity at the 43,000-seat ground on the western outskirts of the French capital.

Soccer, with its many black stars, ought to be a showcase of multiracial harmony, especially in France, which draws heavily on talent from its former African colonies.

Instead, the brawling soccer fans have emerged as the extreme fringe of a deeply troubled France, one that is grappling with stiffening resistance to immigration, protests linked to youth unemployment and the perceived threat of globalization.

Now, after the riots that engulfed immigrant-filled French suburbs last fall, beer-fueled racism in soccer has taken on an even more menacing tinge.

Unlike soccer hooliganism elsewhere, in which the antagonists are fans of rival teams, the clashes outside Parc des Princes are largely between fans rooting for the same team, PSG.

On the bleachers of Parc des Princes, PSG supporters divide along racial lines in two opposing sections of stands […]

In an earlier post noting the many areas in France are being completely overtaken by Islamists—who have instituted sharia law and chased native French out of towns and schools that are now being run according to Koranic law—I wrote of my surprise that the ultranationalist French [who I have consistently distinguished from other countries in western Europe in terms of their regard for multiculturalism as social policy—which provides the impetus for both the characterization of France as “ultranationalist” and the source of my “surprise”*] had let things go far.  I also predicted that Paris would soon burn—in large part because I believe the French government will begin cracking down on these Muslim enclaves.

But more than that, I think much of western Europe is heading in this direction—though in some areas, the uprising will be populist and will circumvent the wishes of the various state governments, who are trying desperately to keep the lid on a boiling kettle.

Multiculturalism of the type practiced throughout western Europe was bound to lead to competing grievance groups, and when one of those groups is given special treatment and allowed, essentially, to declare themselves free from the laws of the host country—and the host country is seen as assenting to those wishes in order to keep from causing “offense” and to stave off violence—other groups who don’t receive the same treatment are bound to grow angry and begin making their feelings known in other ways.

Is there any doubt that soon we’ll see a resurgence of white supremacist groups in Europe? Of an England that closely resembles the England of the 70s?  The overtness of the soccer hooligans in France is an important signal, showing that one of the most important social barriers to a racialist uprising has been breached:  the social stigma of making racist remarks in public.

It won’t be long now, I don’t think, until such animosities are taken outside the soccer stadiums.  Unless, that is, the governments in Europe do something proactive first.

France, I predicted, is the most likely to do so—French nationalism and self-interest being what it is.  But there are other countries in Western Europe whose soft socialist/liberal governments simply won’t have the stomach for it.  And so the uprising will come from extragovernmental avenues, which almost assures that it will be messy.

Where have you gone, Maggie Thatcher…?

France may be a lot of things. Multiculturalist, it is not.

  2. CraigC says:

Christ. Here I was going to make an informed comment, and now I have to answer Asshole. Yes, France is and always has been very nationalistic, and their minorities are segregated, and the white natives look down their noses at the little brown peoples. But as with every other country in Europe, the state practices an extended form of socialist multi-culturalism, which is what Jeff was talking about.  What is it with libtards and reading comprehension?

Anyway, yeah, it’s very sad, Jeff. I lived in France for four years, and despite the cultural elites being socialist idiots, it was a beautiful country, and I’m sure the regular people are still very nice and friendly. That country is gone now, though, and more’s the pity.

I certainly don’t see any preferences there. There may be areas where the full weight of the law doesn’t reach, but we also have the same here. Like here, I don’t think it has much to do with tolerance, and more to do with the expense of enforcement.

  4. ed says:

    Hmmm.

Summary: Europe is living A Clockwork Orange.

    Or perhaps Lavender.

    Maybe Mauve.

  5. Hey Jeff,

Positing out from your thesis, can you imagine something similar happening here vis-a-vis illegal immigrants?

A point I’ve made before is that these folks haven’t heard the word “no” in quite a while.  What happens if a populist movement brings that about?

  6. ed says:

    Hmmmm.

    @ actus

France may be a lot of things. Multiculturalist, it is not.

Multiculturalism is the opposite of assimilation.

  7. CraigC says:

I do agree with you actus that a lot of it has to do with the cost of enforcement, and I don’t just mean the expense of enforcement, but the social cost, too. However, it’s the pie-in-the-sky multiculti crap that has led to the current situation.

Perhaps you could edify me as to where the “full force of the law” doesn’t reach in this country. I thought we were living in a police state.

  8. Vercingetorix says:

    Multiculturalist, it is not.

Because true multi-culti has never been tried. Like communism.

  9. Muslihoon says:

Indeed, this has been a disturbing trend in Europe. It’s nothing new though. Rightist parties have been gaining in many European countries. France’s le Pen is an excellent example thereof.

  10. actus says:

Multiculturalism is the opposite of assimilation

Exactly. And France demands assimilation into an ossified vision of what is ‘french.’ We’re multicultural. We have arab-americans and hispanic americans, each with own cultures and traditions that we do not demand be assimilated into one equal sameness.

  11. Vercingetorix says:

    We’re multicultural.

    No.

  12. actus says:

full weight. Not just force. By that I mean law abiding as well as enforcement.

There are a lot of schools in this countries inner cities where not much learning takes place. There are places where you can smoke weed outside, places where crackhouses exist. Places were muggings happen. Its not because we have a ‘preference’ for crackhouses or muggings, but because we don’t have a perfectly lawful society.

Because true multi-culti has never been tried. Like communism.

I think we’re pretty multicultural. Jew, arab, mormon, hispanic, we’re all americans. We don’t demand that you assimilate to one thing to be american.

  13. CraigC says:

    I give up. Next thread.

  14. Vercingetorix says:

    we’re all americans.

Which is different from being Jew, Mormon, Muslim, Arab, and hispanic alone. That’s multi-culti; out of many, many. Asia is multiculti. That’s why Asia has China, Russia, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Malaysia, Korea, and Thailand.

    Separate and blissfully multicult.

France and Europe are bi-cultural at best gloss. Too bad for them. One misses the old days of Panzers sunning on the Champes Elysees.

  15. CraigC says:

Hey, V, you know why they planted trees along the Champs Elysee, right? So the Germans could march in the shade.

  16. actus says:

Which is different from being Jew, Mormon, Muslim, Arab, and hispanic alone.

Yes. That’s how the unicultural mind works. You must assimiliate to one ideal or you are the other.

    Separate and blissfully multicult.

I don’t see why pointing that there are different countries makes them ‘multi.’ India is quite multi: there are various religions, languages as well as castes. And preferences too. Not separete. Also, I wouldn’t say asia is that blissful.

  17. Vercingetorix says:

Germans…the only people in the world with poor enough taste to actually conquer France. The only reason France is a free country is because nobody WANTS it.

  18. Vercingetorix says:

You must assimiliate to one ideal or you are the other.

    Whooosh!

India is quite multi: there are various religions, languages as well as castes.

Kinda funny how the hooligans are called racists, but the car torchers in the banlieue were just “youths.”

Rival gangs are multiethnic? Perhaps this is a form of assimilation to emulate.

From the other post, linked within this one:

What is suprising here is that the ultranationalist French have allowed the situation to go this far.  For what it’s worth, I would have expected this more in, say, Great Britain—but I suppose that the French have so ghettoized their Muslim population that they have alienated, rather than assimilated, Muslims, which (moreso than multicultural “tolerance”) is the cause of the Balkanization in this instance.

Actus, you read me enough and comment enough to know that I believe France to be different w/ respect to multiculturalism than other countries in western Europe.  And I’ve said as much.

No I wasn’t aware of that. Specially when you were making a point about multicultural western europe with France as the example in the article.

Well, that’s why I add the helpful links.

You might try clicking through them before you comment on the posts.

Ironically, you commented 3x in the very thread where I noted the difference between France’s nationalism and ghettoization being the cause of their internal tensions and the multiculturalism of GB.  Funny you couldn’t be bothered to read it first before commenting several times.

Multiculturalism leads to the same kind of divisions we see in France; and the reasons are similar:  assimilation is not done effectively. In one case, France sees the Other as its lessers; in the case of most of the rest of Western Europe (Britain being the example I used), multiculturalism allows the Other to enjoy a kind of autonomy which is often at odds with the host country’s traditions and laws.

I almost never address actus, and now he’ll know why.  He’s disingenuous.

I have always noted that France is not part of the multiculturalist movement in western Europe.  But that doesn’t mean their nativism is not having the same effect.

And I forgot about it, and here you generalized from France to Western Europe. I forgot that you had said that it was chauvisnism “moreso” than multiculturalism that got the French in trouble, in a thread where I was discussing with commenters that thought France was multicultural, and I was arguing it was not. Sorry I forgot that this means you think that France is not multicultural.

Glad to see we see eye to on France: not multicultural. You say its not, I say its not. I’ve always thought you were smarter than the people who post here saying it is. And yet you get all hufty even when we agree.

A Protein Wisdom Future Reminiscence Comment:

Yes son, all the way back in 2006, common sense was taking a beating right here on this very spot. A lot of good Americans lost their lives that day due to a target identification problem.

You see, son, they thought they were shooting at something vapid, and with very little substance like some fairy in gossamer. Turns out they were firing upon fortifications of a previously unknown sort. Hard, dense barriers were erected all about Camp Nuhuh like some mystical force field, impervious to facts, logic and even incriminatig photographs. The barriers so thick, so heavy and so black that they were nearly impossible to comprehend. Even the smartest, most powerful munitions bounced harmlessly away upon contact with the Black Curtain of Density employed the forces of the People’s Republic of Contraria and their commander, General actuse.

The Contrarian offensive forces were attacking with their full force, which was admittedly not very forceful. It was more like a swarm of mosquitos which wasn’t really capable of doing much damage, but could tie up our defenses for hours on end, simply by annoying the shit out of them.

The world was in peril, and with no known way to penetrate the Contrarian defenses. Desperate for a solution, the President commissioned the EliLilly Project. Soon, we’d devised a way to spike the Contrarian water supply with Prozac, they all went noght-night and the world was saved once again.

You get to make sense today, son, because brave men died defending your right to do so. Never Forget.
