Vigilante Censorship Alive and Well in Kentucky.  Until a University President with Some Huevos Stepped in and Drove a Stake Through Its Heart”

Finally, a fulfilling follow-up to a story about an academic who presumed she must destroy the First Amendment in order to save it.  From the AP:

A college professor has been put on leave and will retire at the end of the semester after admitting she told students to destroy an anti-abortion display on campus.

Sally Jacobsen, a professor in the literature and language department at Northern Kentucky University, will not return to the school, President James Votruba said.

“I believe what she did was outside the scope of her employment,” Votruba said Monday.

Jacobsen acknowledged leading graduate students on Wednesday to a grassy area near the University Center to rip up about 400 crosses. The crosses, temporarily erected a week earlier by a group called Northern Right to Life, were meant to represent a cemetery for aborted fetuses.

It was unclear whether Jacobsen took part in dismantling the display. She could not be located for comment Monday afternoon. University police were investigating the vandalism report.

…Well, if by “unclear” the AP means that wasn’t actually Professor Jacobsen in the photographs destroying the display…

Katie Walker, a member of Northern Right to Life, said her group would like those who destroyed the crosses prosecuted.

“I just hope they’re held accountable for their actions,” Walker said.

I applaud the actions taken by the University to this point.  But I think it would be extra special swell if, before she “retires,” Professor Jacobsen—along with her entire band of “free-speech” vandals—would be forced, in lieu of criminal prosecution, to attend a series of cultural sensitivity seminars.

Those are big on campus these days, from what I understand.

I’d pay real money to see that.  I’d sit quietly and just observe.  I promise.

Ah, the crushing of dissent continues apace.  Chill wind, folks.  Chill.  Wind.

Never underestimate the Huevos of a Red State University President.

    Mr. Votruba, I salute you.

For my money, you’d get real deterrence if you sentenced Prof Jake to walk around the town square in a big foam cross outfit ala Eddie Murphy as Gumby.

And if you could get her to sing, well……

  6. alppuccino says:

    And to tb,

Other than ultimately becoming a career ending caper, it really was a non-event.

Needs more work. At least 5 more sessions.

  11. alppuccino says:

    Actus,

Did you see all the gay couples doing the Easter Egg roll at the Whitehouse?  What?  Was George out of town?

C’mon dude.  Let it go.  George wants you to be happy.

The only problem with that is that up until recently she was probably the one they had teaching those seminars.

Did I go? No. I saw it in the press.

The only problem with that is that up until recently she was probably the one they had teaching those seminars.

I think she was teaching british literature. You know, dead white european males.

    I, on the other hand,…

TW: peace, colloquial for get outta here…

It would be interesting to know what kind of pension consideration that Prof. Goebbels, er, Jacobson will be receiving once she retires.

Whataya bet that if a conservative prof had led his/her (happy now, acthole?) students on a rampage destroying an anti-war, or pro-choice display that he/she would not only have been terminated, not allowed to retire, but would have had their pension stripped? Not to mention the resulting protests, supported by the usual cast of suspects (Jesse, Al, Cindy, Harry, et al) that would have fueled the media frenzy so clearly absent in this case.

Oh, but there’s no such thing as media bias folks…..

TW – “boy”, as in boy is Jeff lucky that acthole or tb didn’t get this turing word or there would have been hell to pay BECAUSE OF THE MYSOGYNY!

As opposed to the socially-relevant cannibalistic clucks of Amazonian witch doctors with bones through their noses?

  17. a University President with Some Huevos

I’ve had huevos con chorizo, but never with University President.  What, are you on a cannibalism roll, lately?

As opposed to the socially-relevant cannibalistic clucks of Amazonian witch doctors with bones through their noses?

For a british literature course? Probably.

I think all who applaud this action should contact President Votruba & let him know. We’re so vocal when we oppose actions, we MUST be equally vocal when someone chooses to do what we consider the right action.

    Cheers to the Pres!

Diversity training.  After they replace every one of the crosses.  As a warning to others who might consider it “worth it.”

  21. moneyrunner says:

Can anyone here explain to me why Actus infers that cultural sensitivity training offends people?  Is this some kind of bizarro sophomoric humor?

  22. Lost Dog says:

You know, once in a while I just have one of those days, and today seems to be one of them.

Despite my optimism about the future, stories like this lead me to believe that we are well and truly fucked. Free Speech? Wnat Free Speech? If you hurt my feelings, I will KILL you.

  23. Major John says:

“bizarro” would have been enough to say, Money.

  24. actus says:

Can anyone here explain to me why Actus infers that cultural sensitivity training offends people?

Thats what this one would be. Practice in offense. For free speech.

  25. Pablo says:

Is this some kind of bizarro sophomoric humor?

Nope. It’s just a cry for attention. The topic isn’t relevent to his purpose, and there is no point to be had.

  26. McGehee says:

Can anyone here explain to me why Actus infers that cultural sensitivity training offends people?

  27. McGehee says:

And in case anyone’s wondering where I got the idea for my last comment, I got the idea from Pablo.

    Vote for Pablo.

  28. moneyrunner says:

Pablo has my vote because the explanation makes as little sense as the original comment.  I stand by bizarre sophomoric.

Going out to exercise my free speech rights by shutting up someone I disagree with.  Back soon.

beckie has a very good point. I just sent an e-mail to President Votruba. Thank you for reminding us, beckie!

  31. prozacula says:

After all, fingernails just don’t pull themselves out—and it no doubt takes considerable effort to pitch a shrieking, wriggling Kush queer off the top of a wall, even if you’re only doing so in spirit, then traveling the world, justifying it in the name of your God during those lazy afternoons in the Yale quad…

well, the fingernails in abu ghraib and all the rest of our secret prisons don’t just pull themselves out either.  but, since we are doing it to brown people, that makes it ok.  it’s only bad when taliban or al qaeda does it – it in no way lowers ourselves to their level.

  32. Jeff Goldstein says:

Pretty sure the Abu Ghraib guards were prosecuted in lieu of being given entry to Yale, but far be it for me to stop you from opening your mouth and making an idiot of yourself on a regular basis, prozacula.

Love the suggestion that it is people like me who hate the brown people, whereas people like you refuse to take them at their word when they threaten other countries with nukes.

How silly, after all, to think people in sandals can launch nukes.  That’s the province of Halliburton-tainted Big Oil Despots.

Christ, you are so ridiculous that I don’t think I’ll reply to you any more.  Ever.  It would be like talking back to a cartoon.

  33. Pretty sure the Abu Ghraib guards were prosecuted in lieu of being given entry to Yale,

    thanks for that, Jeff.

TW: i know groups of soldiers that were angry about what those idiots did.

  34. actus says:

Pretty sure the Abu Ghraib guards were prosecuted in lieu of being given entry to Yale,

But their spokesmen? What of them?

  35. Phil Smith says:

Their “spokesmen” were what we call, in this country, “attorneys”.

Personally, I agree with Shakespeare on that particular score.
