Sure, it’s a couple years old…

But it’s still pretty damn ironic—even for those who believe we’ve probably grown progressively more barbaric in our treatment of Gitmo detainees since international scrutiny has intensified.

  1. Jeff Goldstein says:

It was great, say boys freed from US prison camp

“I am lucky I went there, and now I miss it. Cuba was great,” said the 14-year-old, knotting his brow in the effort to make sure he is understood.

The food in the camp was delicious, the teaching was excellent, and his warders were kind. “Americans are good people, they were always friendly, I don’t have anything against them,” he said. “If my father didn’t need me, I would want to live in America.”

Asadullah is even more sure of this. “Americans are great people, better than anyone else,” he said, when found at his elder brother’s tiny fruit and nut shop in a muddy backstreet of Kabul. “Americans are polite and friendly when you speak to them. They are not rude like Afghans. If I could be anywhere, I would be in America. I would like to be a doctor, an engineer _ or an American soldier.”

    NOT IN MY NAME, WARMONGERS!

Well, we certainly would be more barbaric if we followed international standards.  (via instapundit)

Didn’t we mimic the policies of Pol Pot, Stalin, and Hitler down there. Or was that an asshat senator showboating for his “peeps”?

  4. rls says:

Yeah…sure.  You quote a couple of teeinies that were probably raped and turned into raging homosexuals, then brainwashed and pumped full of “forget everthing you’ve ever known” drugs.

What kind of anectdotes do you have from the hundreds, nay, thousands that they lined up against the wall and pumped full of lead?  What did they have to say?

I WANT QUOTES FROM THE DEAD, DAMMIT!!!!

  5. A classic example of Stockholm syndrome.

  6. Bic says:

Those US interagators really know their stuff.

I’m sure Amnesty International is already working to once again update the definition of torture to include the types of atrocities mentioned by the boys; excursions to the sandy warm beaches for snorkeling lessons, education in several languages and subjects, daily football, volleyball, basketball games.  And while they say their door was never locked, you just know those brutish soldiers were lying in wait with cream pies (my guess would be coconut) if they even thought about making a run for a late night snack.

It’s almost enough to make you sick to your stomach.

(btw, does anyone know exactly what it would take to get sent to Gitmo for say, about 4 weeks, some time in early July?)

    (TW: Fear, it’s almost uncanny)

  7. adam says:

Don’t get me wrong, that is wonderful to hear, but can someone explain why we were holding 12 and 13 year old boys in the first place?

  8. B Moe says:

    They were caught skipping school.

  9. tim maguire says:

Well adam, I have no facts, but that doesn’t stop me from having a theory. And here it is:

When your enemy arms 12 and 13 year old boys and sends them into battle against you, your stock of POWs is going to include the occasional 12 or 13 year old boy.

    Great strides in Americanism:

We now congratulate ourselves for not torturing 12-year-olds.

  11. Tom M says:

I wonder if they’re still alive, after these couple of years.

  12. DrSteve says:

    Is this rhetorical device yours?

    congratulate ourselves for not torturing

    It appears to be broken.

I think fwiw that the piece plainly suggests a standard somewhat above “not torturing.”

  13. nikkolai says:

Mike Shilling certainly sounds bright and sunny! What must it be like to go through life like that? Rather bizarre.

It’s an Afghan boy, apparently of his own free will, speaking to a Brittish newspaper. Nope, no Americans there. Oh, you were referring to PW possibly? I don’t know that it’s so much self-congratulation as pointing out what a fuckin’ lie the left has had to get their story to hold together. You sound like one of those who needs to believe lots of lies in order to make your world view fit together without to many trapdoors yourself.

No, they were in Gitmo, Cuba.  That’s nowhere near Sweden.  Duh!

Must you remind those of us from Illinois about our senior Senator?  mad

Nah, Islam took care of that long before…

  18. Muslihoon says:

Hah. I think we should take him in. I’m sure the hundreds of thousands of immigration supporters will support his imminent immigration so he can have a better life? Especially since he probably likes America more than many protestors? Or would his pro-Americanism disqualify him?

I don’t think I’m too happy with this chap’s report. It’s an interrogation center, for crying out loud, not a resort. Is this what we pay taxes for? Operating Hotel Gitmo for Central and South Asians?

Anyway, at least those who accuse the US military of Gestapo tactics can put this in their pipe and smoke it.

  19. Kyda Sylvester says:

OSCE: Guantanamo Better Than Belgian Jails

Heck, from the sound of it, Guantanamo is better than American jails. By a long shot.

This story really shows that unfortunately, 13 year old boys were on the battlefield and 13 or not, that rifle he was carrying was just as capable of killing an American soldier.  We also show that we are compassionate and reasonable when a tough choice is made- we these children were treated well and educated.  Finally, we now have children who were returned to their homes, with positive stories about Americans, in many ways connter-acting the BS spewing from the jihadists.  Because honestly, these kids are less likely to lie then the average Gitmo detainee.

Also I can safely say if the shoe was on the other foot and Sadaam Hussein had “accidently” captured 13 year old boys, their fate would be far different then what they experienced with teh Americans.

  21. Greek Homer in a time of Springfield Homers says:

They were made to play soccer every day?  Maybe we are worse than Nazis.  I curse thee, foul American filth soldiers of torture and evil and European sports!!!
