I think there is a route through the Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear area, but it was probably awful too. My high school is having a reunion in Las Vegas this weekend,, and I came really close to being trapped on that freeway.
When I was a kid I noticed the little unobtrusive mileage markers alongside California highways. Most “San” or “Santa” counties were designated with just two letters, such as SF or SM, while the rest had three — but for a state with only 58 counties they’ve got a surprising number of repetitions, so Marin got MRN and Mariposa MPA. Monterey got MON while Mono County was stuck with MNO.
I was fascinated with how many SB counties there were, but only ever managed to catch San Benito’s marker abbreviation: SBT.

Yeah, I think that is one lane in each direction, with lots of winding sections, so slow speeds, and if it is taking all of the traffic headed to the east side of the 15/215, they’re gonna have been bumper-to-bumper.
We are the largest county in the US by area. You can go surfing at the beach in the morning, go parasailing or snow skiing in the afternoon, and head to Vegas for some gambling that evening.
There are a lot of things that suck in the Inland Empire, but opportunities for fun isn’t one of them.
I-15 between Barstow and Vegas is one of the worst routes in the country. Burned, burned in my memory is a trip home from Disney with my brother’s family on New Year’s Eve (definitely an error in judgment, there). This was before smart phones.
For hours and hours we crept forward, even to the point of taking a dirt frontage road that featured dozens of vehicles with newly flattened tires.
Finally we got to a chock-full rest stop where people in the bathrooms were discussing alternate routes to Vegas, through Pahrump and stuff.
Then when we got back onto the freeway after the rest stop the traffic was running just fine. It was the rest stop itself that was the clog.
On the other hand, Zzyzx. You can’t beat that, even when you’re NOT playing road-sign alphabet.
just pour some water on it
So that’s why the air in SLC looks so foggy.
Daughter got caught in traffic trying to come back down through the Cajon Pass…
She called to tell us she was okay even before we knew that a problem was coming to fruition.
#1 daughter, SIL and kids were in Long Beach at the aquarium today — they live in Victorville.
Took them five hours to trek up the 5 (with thousands of their closest friends) and backtrack along the 14.

Which SB County? Doesn’t California have, like, eight of them?
San Bernardino

Larger than several dozen countries, and at 20,105 square miles, larger than New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware and Rhode Island combined.
