From FOXNews and the AP:
Explosions shook the Grand Hyatt and Radisson hotels in Jordan’s capital late Wednesday, and witnesses saw smoke rising from the building.
FOX News confirmed five people had died in the blasts, and police said the cause of the explosion was unknown.
“I just saw about eight or nine casualties brought in,†said Serene Sabbagh, FOX News producer in Amman.
A black cloud of smoke was seen rising from the building in the commercial Jebel Amman district following the blast at about 8:50 p.m.
Ambulances were seen rushing to the hotel.
There is also a preliminary report of another explosion at the Days Inn.
Not to make too obvious a connection, but Zarqawi is, of course, Jordanian. And the simultaneous nature of the blasts suggests Al Qaeda involvement.
On a related note, these hotels are all popular with both foreign journalists, security professionals, wealthy Jordanian businessmen, and Israelis. Not that any of that matters to Al Qaeda. They’ll slaughter anyone.

update: Via FOXNews, Reuters reporting that one bomb was placed in a false ceiling at the Radisson
****
update 2: At least 18 53 dead and at least 120 wounded, says latest reports.
Jordan has been a rather high profile ally against Islamic terrorism; so the only thing surprising about this, as far as I’m concerned, is how unguarded was this triangle of targets.
****
update 3: The Jordanian news service is saying 3 suicide bombers are responsible for the blasts; this is running counter to many reports that the explosives were pre-planted.
****
update 4: One of the explosions purportedly took place within a banquet hall where a wedding party was holding a celebration.
BECAUSE OF THE IMPERIALIST MATRIMONY!
****
update 5: Suicide bombers walking into the hotels appear to be the cause, according to Jordanian spokesmen.
Also, keep in mind, Jordan isn’t Islamic enough.
I think it’s fairly western.
Some dude on CNN is saying that the car of the Prime Minister of Jordan was at the Day’s Inn.
It’s them damn Amish again.
I’m so tired of this kind of crap, that I am ready to call for public torture and slow painful death to any that perpetrate or support these kinds of acts.
Any word yet on the bombers’ religion? I got $20 on Xorastorarians or Ba’hai.
Doesn’t Jordan’s population consist of like 80% people who go around saying they’re “Palestinian”?
More specifically, it’s the Dirty Amish.
Doesn’t Jordan’s population consist of like 80% people who go around saying they’re “Palestinian
We’re all Palestinians in some way. If you’ve ever been cut off in traffic, passed up for a promotion, dumped by a hot chick, or you’ve blown yourself up in front of children, you’re a Palestinian in spirit if not deed or hatred of Jews.
Spinn’n and Lying…
A glance at history, or at the pages of any newspaper, reveals that ideas which divide one group of human beings from another, only to unite them in slaughter, generally have their roots in religion. -Sam Harris, Author of ‘The End Of Faith’
Frustration for a lack of success in Iraq?
Chuck
Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot ….
ahem.
Oh, come on, Dahleen. Chuck said ”generally have their roots in religion”, so there’s some wiggle room for the paltry 100,000,000 killed by communism.
Ahhh, jeez. This means they’re gonna blow up the Turnpike stops, don’t it?

Turing: care. “I don’t care…”
Well, if it is God’s fault, then there surely must be a God. If he can wield that kind of power, I’m not dragging him to court.
I mean, think of all the wacko serial killers that spoke with God, who advised them of his wishes to do in this guy, or that girl, and he wasn’t even indicted as a co-conspirator.
Anyway, I’m not sure that the quote Chuck used actually had much to do with spinning or lying, as much as making an observation.
tw: usually I’m nicer than this. Lord, I apologize.
So, this stuff with Jordan, it was more of those angry French “youths”, right? We need to figure out how to better integrate al Qaeda into society.
You can make a pretty good case that Communism is a religion. It divides people into the saved and the damned, it promises a paradise to those who follow its tenets, and it requires an enormous amount of faith from its believers in order to counter the evidence of their own lying eyes.
T/W: “systems.” Yes, I suppose “belief systems” would be a more value-neutral term. I stand corrected by the spam filter.
utron,
yes, except that, with religion, the reward happens at the end of the (figurative) day. I suppose that radical Islam tends to hurry folks along, though.
The Grand Hyatt, the Radisson, and the Days Inn. Which one of these doesn’t go with the others?
You’re absolutely correct, utron. Communism is a religion.
Jordan was part of the Palestinian territory that was partitioned by the British. The original PLO type organizations where pissed at Israel and Jordan both, but eventually focused on Israel when they realized that terrorism shit didn’t work so great against an Arab monarchy.
Re: Comunisim asreligion
Considder:
The basic tenets are taken on faith
No dissent is allowed
Blasphemers are punished with death
Yup – sounds like a religion to me.
– So then it would follow that:
