“Conservative Group to Oppose John Roberts”

From My Way News:

A conservative group in Virginia said Tuesday it was withdrawing its support for Supreme Court nominee John Roberts’ confirmation because of his work helping overturn a Colorado referendum on gays.

The group, Public Advocate of the United States, is one of the first conservative organizations to announce anything but support for the judge

Eugene Delgaudio, the president of the group, said in an interview that he hopes his stance will prod others.

“I know that others feel the same way. I know they believe as I do. They’re just not going to act,” the 50-year-old Northern Virginia man said. “But once I’ve done it, then they can’t claim that no one’s opposing Roberts.”

“We can’t take our limited resources and put it toward a candidate who is not a strict constructionist when we were told he is,” Delgaudio said.

The stance by his group, which describes itself as a pro-family organization, puts it in opposition to conservative groups that have endorsed Roberts. A number of liberal groups already oppose President Bush’s high court nominee.

Delgaudio said his group had planned to send out more than 1 million pieces of direct mail for Roberts, as well as working telephones, polling and conducting petition drives.

But now, “canceling our mail campaign is the least we can do,” he said. He said he would poll his group to see if members want him to be neutral, spend money to oppose Roberts or reinstate support.

Reached for comment, Sean Hannity’s head, which had previously announced its full support for Judge Roberts, exploded— lodging hundreds of superballs and a handful of packaging peanuts into the cheeks, hair, and scalp of a badly wounded (and troublingly pale) Alan Colmes.

Yup. Since I can’t be up-to-date on every detail and nuance on an issue, and since I’m not comfortable with ceding everything to the tyranny of “experts”, my rule of thumb on matters like this is: Who’s pissed off?

He’s got all the right enemies on the left, and it looks like he’s getting some good ones on the right.

Bring in a Falwell or a Robertson and I’m all for the guy. Any commentary hinting darkly about “papists” would just be a bonus.

  2. Robert says:

This guy is pretty fringe.  Byron York has the scoop.

  3. ed says:

    Hmmmm.

Frankly I don’t like Roberts myself.  The guy doesn’t have anything solid in his background.  People point to his work as an attorney, but even Roberts himself discounts that work since he was acting on behalf of his clients.  If you elminate that, then what you’ve got is a liberal, not a conservative.  And this guy is being billed as a conservative.

It doesn’t help that Roberts has *never* once aided a conservative cause pro bono, but he’s done pro bono work for liberal groups many times.

Not that I give a rat’s ass I suppose, since I left the GOP a couple months ago.  In a way I’m just kicking back and watching the oncoming train crash.  When Roberts shows his true colors and the conservatives realise that they’ve been fucked by the GOP, once again.  It’s going to be a curious thing to see if they continue to bend over and take in the ass.  Of if conservatives finally realise that they’ve been had, and give the GOP the finger.

Either way, it should be an amusing time.

    spameword: “white” the other meat.

Hey I’m a conservative and I used to be a Republican for more than 25 years.  With that history politics and anal kinda go together.

Oh that would be a site to behold – Phelps group beside NARAL protesting in unison against the evil John Roberts.

I’ve been worried about Alan for some time now myself.

Thinking that maybe it has to do with being on the wrong side of the issue every day – and knowing it – for so very long.
