Fine. But did it draw “assault weapons”?
Because if not, there’s simply not a lot of political capital to be had from highlighting it. And if it can’t be exploited for political gain, it didn’t happen. Sorry, but those are the rules. Everything else is just the railing of bigots trying to “politicize” “tragedy.”
— Although I have been informed that AG Eric Holder will be on high alert, looking for any signs of hateful racist backlash. Which unlike racial rioting or terrorism qua terrorism (Holder, after all, directed a magistrate to go to “criminal bomber” #2’s hospital room to Mirandize him), will NOT be tolerated.
So we’ve got that going for us.

This story is consistent with 2 other similar events close to locales where I have lived:
“Freaknik” in Atlanta (circa 1995, not sure about any more recent instances)
“Galveston Beach Party Weekend” (appears to have ended around 2010)
In both cases, folks I knew that lived close to where the festivities occurred made a point to be away from home that weekend for much of same reasons being reported. I know being around a bunch of loud drunk white college kids isn’t much fun either (sometimes even if you’re one of them) but I don’t think you can draw an equivalence across-the-board.
But, as nearly ever University in North America is fond of reminding us, only whites are racists and all us whiteys are racist.
At the seaside amusement park I use to work at and Mrs. Bear still does, Easter Sunday is unofficially called “Black Sunday” because urban folks have made it a tradition for quite some time, not really sure why.
Not really violent though, just loud and obnoxious like many large groups of people often were. I recall having more trouble with the DCARA (Deaf Counseling Advocacy & Referral Agency) outing although they were quiet and obnoxious.
Highland Mall in central north Austin is more or less closed now because of problems with the Texas Relays back in 2009.
People after the relays came and hung out (thugged around) in the mall and didn’t buy anything. Customers of course bailed. The Mall was ordered NOT to kick people out even if they caused trouble or they’d be accused of racism and dealt with harshly by Austin authorities. The stores got REALLY angry. So when the rent when up AGAIN due to the mall real estate crisis which was still hanging around since 2007, 3/4’s of the stores moved out and stayed gone for four years. Many opened free standing stores or went to strip malls. Now that mall is down to a food court in the central cross area, and maybe 20 stores clustered around it and they just sold it to Austin Community College to be turned into a campus and offices.
Enclosed malls are kind of rare around here now. Austin still has Lakeline Mall to the North and Barton Creek mall to the south. Both of which are a little run down looking now. Northcross got torn down to make way for a small Walmart. Westgate n South Austin has been gone for a long time.
here’s a fun mall story

On Saturday, the couple went to North Riverside Mall and shoplifted alcohol from an outlet store, then spent the rest of the day drinking, police said. They then went to the West Side of Chicago, where Lopez performed a sex act for money in an alley, and the pair used the money to buy crack cocaine, police said.
Lopez told police she fell asleep early Sunday, and when she woke up, her marijuana was gone.*
