I’m not a “Star Trek” fan—never watched the show, and only caught one or two of the movies (I suspect I’m not the only one still having frightfully vivid dreams of a glistening, bare-chested Ricardo Montalban)—but I know enough about the series and its cultural impact to appreciate this wonderfully wry and loving tribute to James “Scotty” Doohan, who passed away earlier this week.
Rest in peace, James.

update: Coming late to this.
Jesus. What a freakin’ nerd camp that guy’s running over there.

You mean to tell me other people copied my “Scotty gets beamed up” thing? Damn, it pisses me off when people take my most original stuff.
Oh yeah, that whole “read the whole thing” deal…all me.
I think he had his chest re-upholstered in “rich Corinthian leather”, didn’t he?
SB: figure

I’ve really been hoping that Den Beste would post an appreciation or something on USS Clueless, but so far he hasn’t. I don’t think he’s even commented on it in the comments of Daily Pundit, his current hangout.
He’s in mourning.
Went to the bar the other night to give Scott a requiem toast. Asked the waitress to bring me a pint of Romulan Ale and without missing a beat she produced a pint of Alaskan Amber. Since she was probably all of 25, I was suitably impressed by Scotty’s realm of influence.
Well those shitty shields finally failed for good.
Dilithium Crystal poisoning? I told you those damn things were radio-active.
I once had a ‘63 Impala that had more power than the Enterprise.
Thanks for link, Jeff. You rock!
Jeff, even though you are not a fan, I recommend you watch Star Trek IV, if you haven’t already. That’s the one that Nimoy directed, and it’s great because they were all on to themselves as culture punchlines by then.
Turing = “indeed”
I’m kind of surprised that he died. All he would have had to do was reverse the polarity on the heart-lung machine.
As a fellow engineer, I’ll admit to considering Montgomery Scott to be the MVP of the original Star Trek. Without Scotty’s engineering genius, every freakin’ episode would have been filmed in drydock while the Enterprise was being repaired. Let’s just say that “Star Trek” without Mr. Scott would have looked a LOT like “Space 1999”.
