President George W. Bush nominated Marine General Peter Pace as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing Air Force General Richard Myers, whose term ends this year.
Pace, if confirmed by the Senate, would become the first Marine to serve as chairman, the top military adviser to the president and the defense secretary.
“To the American people, Marine is shorthand for can-do, and I’m counting on Pete Pace to bring the Marine spirit to these new responsibilities,’’ Bush said at the White House.
Well, I was shocked that the Dems dared go after John Bolton—a man who unabashedly puts America’s interest above the interest of a faux-representative “world” governing organization—but then I hadn’t anticipated that they’d find a media-friendly backdoor, one that woud enable them to tether Bolton’s ambassadorship to the new-agey “mean people suck” meme.
Will Senate Dems go after Pace? Likely not in any way that would sink his appointment. After all, the Democratic party as a whole is still terrified about seeming hostile to the military (which is odd, considering how they often are quite hostile to the military), so I don’t anticipate any serious problems with getting Pace through. However, I do expect the Dems to use this as another opportunity to highlight U.S. failures in Iraq. Ad nauseum.
Which grandstanding, if there is any justice, will coincide with a series of major victories for the new Iraqi government, an incipient government that—if you haven’t been paying attention—is the result of democratic elections and unprecedented factational compromise brought about largely thanks to the efforts of the U.S. military.
Man, LIBERALS SUCK! AM I RIGHT? CAN I GET AN AMEN?
“Praise Da Lawd”
AMEN, MY BROTHER, AMEN!
Democrat grandstanding and self-aggrandizement in the Bolton hearing aside, who knew the diplomatic corps were such pussies? Boxer thinks Bolton needs anger management for yelling at a subordinate?
Oh, and Boxer? Secretly ashamed of small patch of chest hair.
boxer? is she really one to talk after her behavior during dr. rice’s hearings? biden too, it was nice watching him pitch a fit over bolton the other day. who’s angry and not fit for office?
Ohh the Dems/liberals are going to complain that General Pace is actually pro-military. The shock and horror … Pace actually knows how to wage war. As Bush says Pace has a can-do attitude … that really pisses libs off. It seems to be the theme of the week … Bolton cares about the USA … the Pope is Catholic.
Marine Corps not Peace Corps!
“To the American people, Marine is shorthand for can-do”
Having a president who believes that makes up for a whole lot of issues I’ve had with Republicans lately.
I doubt the Dems would be stupid enough to get all pissy about Gen Pace’s nomination, for 2 reasons:
1) You average American wouldn’t know who or what the “Joint Chiefs” are, and so could likely give a rat’s ass who’s in charge. Thus, there would be no political capital to be gained by making an issue of it.
2) America loves it’s Marines, and getting huffy now that one, for the first time EVER, gets to be the head honcho of the military is a lose-lose situation for the Dems, especially after the ass-kickings we handed out in Fallujah, Mosul, etc.
The people probably pitching the biggest hissy fits are the other services. The Army nearly bursts a cranial vein any time anyone suggests putting a Marine in charge of them, and the Air Force thinks we are a bunch of neanderthal throwbacks who fight wars with knives and e-tools, rather than slick, fancy bombers. And they are right, of course. And the Navy thinks of us as that annoying little brother that your Mom makes you take with you everywhere.
This should be good! {{rubbing his hands, wicked gleam in eye, etc…}}
so, i’m sure you know the old joke…
Q: why does the navy take marines with them everywhere?
A: cause sheep would be too obvious.
“To the American people, Marine is shorthand for can-doâ€Â
Except “Marine” is 6 letters and “can-do” is 5. How is it shorthand if it’s longer than the original? Semantics, but it makes me flinch.
Okay then, how about:
Q: How do they separate the men from the boys in the Navy?
A: They don’t.
Jeff says:
Sinking his appointment would imply that they were effective at blocking it.
Um… Jeff, I’m sure you’ve noticed… when was the last time the Democrats were effective at anything?
