Debunking pop-cultural myths, 6

For years, rumors circulated among fans of “Facts of Life” about an unaired 1987 episode in which Jo (Nancy McKeon) “comes out” to Blair (Lisa Whelchel) after both young women get drunk at a college fraternity party.  The two then tongue kiss for several seconds before Blair realizes what’s happening and pushes Jo away.

According to show creator Jenna McMahon, however, no such episode was ever shot, nor was Jo ever written as a gay woman.  Ms. McMahon would not, though, deny that the McKeon-Whelchel kiss took place—and director Valentine Mayer once hinted at a “Facts of Life” convention about having seen a “petting session” between the show’s two attractive leads when he popped his head into Ms. Whelchel’s trailer.

Hey, I wouldn’t mind popping my head in Ms. Welchel’s “trailer” either.

I heard the Mayer rumor as well.. but in the version I heard, he glimpsed ‘the petting session’ after paramedics were called to

Ms. Welchel’s trailor to aid in dislodging Ms. McKeon’s fist which had become stuck in much the same way as a child’s head might become stuck when forced between the bars of an iron fence.. if you get my drift.. Appearantly, retrieving Ms. McKeon’s hand took the better part of 4 hours, most of a large can of Crisco and a lot of pulling.. well.. pulling from McKeon and praying from Welchel.. They learned an important fact of life that day.. dont force your fist into spots that are far too tight.. no matter how much she begs you to ‘give her all youve got

  3. JWebb says:

    I give up.

“trailer”; is that what the kids are calling it these days?

Thanks – I racked my brain trying to remember the nubian nubile one. Speaking of racks . . .

  6. Robert says:

I’ll buy that for a dollar!
