October fundraiser: this time it’s personal. And also, October [sticky; new posts appear below; FRIDAY UPDATE; final Monday update]

Help support the notorious and unsupportable; help fund the demise of polite and self-destructive GOP status quo politicking and the rise of outlawish Visogthisityism; and give the Devil his due, on the outside shot you can win a shiny fiddle made of gold (which, let’s face it, that ain’t gonna happen; I can fiddle like Nero while my reputation burns): it’s three, three, three mints in one!

Plus, it’s a month before election time. Romney’s flush with cash, and the media’s in the tank for Obama (though mentioning the obvious is practically racist). So it’s not like this thing hasn’t already been decided one way or the other.

Either way, I figure I’ll need MREs, some sort of dugout or bunker complex, and more ammo. For when NOAH and the IRS start going door to door armed with all that .40 hollow point they’ve been hoarding.

Thanks in advance.

Friday update:   Thanks so much to all who’ve donated this month!  I’m about 2/3 of the way home, which is a marked improvement over this time last month. I’ve also noticed some new names among the donations.  This gives me hope that I’m somehow making it around some of the boundaries that have been put in place against me.

Likely the fact that I’m using porn tags to get traffic here.  Come for the (missing) titties, stay for the  spirited and unapologetic discussion of hermeneutics, classical liberalism, and foreign policy seances!

Okay, so I made that last bit up about the porn tags.

You’re pretty sure.

Monday update:  Thanks again to all who’ve contributed. Because of your generosity — and because of my hatred of zombies, should they come my way — I’ve been able to increase my practice with my rifles.  At 75 feet, using 7.62×51, I believe I’m now able to shoot their teeth out one by one:

..and at 300 ft, I’m getting much better (note:  two separate groupings on this target; I was fine-tuning my scope):

Shot both targets off a swivel bipod that converts outward from a pistol grip.  Little bit of cant allowed in the design, as well.  No rear stabilizer or sandbag. Just cheek and shoulder.

Next up:  Standing shots.

Been getting some pointers from a former Special Ops buddy.  My breathing control has gotten a lot better, as has my deliberate completion of the trigger pull.

The SCAR-17, let me tell you, is an awesome rifle. And the GRSC 1-6x scope I put on it is about as good as it gets from 10ft-1800ft.  Seriously.  Stands up to the $2500 Elcan, and is priced 150% less.

Gimp is up to ver. 2.8.2; and if you are a Apple MAC OsX user, it’s now written in your native language. These GNU guys will tell you that it’s not meant to replace Photoshop but they try their damndest to make it competitive. There is an expectation that you have to challenge a stiffer learning curve than with the more polished Photoshop, but I somehow managed to do it. Well, good enough to suit my purposes, I suppose.

I use another program to print photos, because Gimp just can’t get that done. Bless their Linux-Ubuntu-sniffing tarball-rolling hearts.

    John B —

Whether or not I’m speaking the truth only time will tell on several fronts. But I can assure all of you who regularly visit of one thing: I always always always strive to be honest and at least pursue the truth.

Which is why, oftentimes, the critics most out to damage me will whisper behind the scenes about how I lie lie lie about them. Oh, and that I’m really quite dumb, once you get past the pseudo-intellectual facade of erudition.

  37. Jeff G. says:

Incidentally, for the S&W MP 15-22, I do have a bunch of ammo, because it’s so cheap. A bit over 5300 rounds, and I’ll pick up another 10,000 or so over the next several months.

But the bigger stuff is pricey, and I tend to fire it more often — at least to this point. I have maybe 500 rounds of the good JHP or other personal defense rounds for my 45 ACP pistols, and maybe another 500 or so plinking rounds, which I regularly use up and replace. Even in bulk (I use Federal American Eagle, which burns a bit hotter and my FNP seems to eat it like candy), it’s expensive on a per round basis, somewhere in the neighborhood of 35-40cents a round.

And for the SCAR-17, you can find military surplus ammo for it from time to time that hits at about that same price point, but if you don’t buy in battle packs, it’s close to 70cents a round easy for FMJ rounds.

So my next hoarding project is going to be to stock a few 7.62×51 battle packs (maybe pick up one every other month, because I first have to pay off all the guns); then maybe another 500 rounds of good +p defense cartridges for the pistols.

For the .22LR, I’ll pick up a box or two each time I go to Walmart until I end up with about a gazillion rounds.

  45. Jeff G. says:

Thanks, Will P, for the laser range finder. This thing is awesome — and has the bullet drop compensator for out past 600 yards that will really help me use my combat rifle scope (which is calibrated for 5.56 rather than .308; not a big difference in drop until out at around 600+, but now I can hit good-sized targets maybe up to 1000 yards, if I can see it. And with some practice).

  86. […] Jeff Money So He Can Practice More Posted on October 8, 2012 11:47 am by Bill Quick October fundraiser: this time it’s personal. And also, October [sticky; new posts appear below… ..and at 300 ft, I’m getting much better (note:  two separate groupings on this target; […]

  87. LBascom says:

Jeff, did you mean to say yards instead of feet? ‘Cuz I gotta say, 75 feet with a rifle isn’t that impressive. I mean, I could get a grouping like that with my pellet gun.

  88. Jeff G. says:

    Thanks, Jerry S!

  89. Jeff G. says:

    Lee:

No, that first was the grouping to sight in the scope. It’s done at 25 yards and then fine-tuned at 100 yards.

I’m sure you can do that at 25 yards with a pellet gun. But I didn’t have a pellet gun. What I did I did without a rifle stand using a 7.62×51 battle rifle that I’d only shot once before. At 100 yards, I put by my count 6 shots within a 1 3/4″ x 1″ window (a bit low of the bullseye and to the right). You can see other shots on the target but they were one-offs where I was making adjustments to the zeroing. I also jerked one shot early on.

After that 6 shot grouping I made a 2cm adjustment up and 2cm to the left, and on my next target I hit the bulls eye dead center.

My wife then shot a bunch on that target so I didn’t post it here. She was a little high and to the right, but I think she was jerking the trigger a bit in anticipation of the sound. The SCAR 17 is LOUD, and people I knew in another lane at the range told me they could feel it.

By the way, the target size I used is 8″ x 8″, less than the size of a human head.

    I’ll take it.

  90. Jeff G. says:

Oh. I also quickly fired off a mag of 45 ACP from my FNP Tac and was dead on @ 7 yards. Grouping was with maybe 2″ and all right around the bullseye. That was shooting with both eyes open.

I’m getting good with that thing, though my guess is I’ll take a step back before going forward again. Seems to be my pattern.

My wife will be out of town on business the next few days so I can’t shoot again until later in the week (I have the baby). But by the time the weekend’s up, I want to see nothing but bulls eyes at 100 yards without a rifle stand. Once I’m there I want to switch to standing and no bipod — just the pistol grip and maybe a fore end angle grip.

  91. Ernst Schreiber says:

Because of your generosity — and because of my hatred of zombies, should they come my way — I’ve been able to increase my practice with my rifles. At 75 feet, using 7.62×51, I believe I’m now able to shoot their teeth out one by one[.]

I’d have gotten you a box of Hornady’s Zombie Max for your bugout bag but, alas, all Scheel’s had in stock was the 55 gr. .223 Rem.

  92. LBascom says:

Ah, I didn’t realize this was only your second time shooting it.

I can hit a 12 oz can at 100 yard with my 30-30 probably 4 out of 5 times. And that’s with a $40 scope I picked up at WalMart. Your rifle is probably that accurate at 5 times the distance.

I think a lot of people flinch because they quit looking at the target when they’re pulling the trigger. I like to practice on cans, cause it’s easier to train yourself to keep your sights on the target til it goes flying. You’re pulling the trigger through the shot, if you know what I’m saying.

Course I don’t go to a fancy range, I generally take a cardboard box with a target taped to it, and a six pack, out in the forest.

  93. leigh says:

Congrats, Jeff. You’re getting into the fun part of the practice zombie killing now. You need some better targets, though. I had some with full-sized bad guys on them pointing a weapon at me.

I eagerly await hearing about how the drop, roll behind a barrier and shoot goes. I loved doing that stuff when I took my defensive shooting class. Probably easier with a handgun. I never tried doing anything fancy with a rifle.

  94. Jeff G. says:

Full-sized targets I have for the 25 yard range. The 100 yard indoor range only allows you to shoot below a certain line so you can’t use full size targets (unless you want to leave half of them hanging off the cardboard. Which now that I think about it may not be such a bad idea; I’ll just go for head shots).

I have some hostage targets I like to use. At about 10′-21′ I can save you. At 30′ and beyond, you can hope that I hit your captor before I hit you. You have about 5-1 odds in your favor. And even then, only a few are kill shots on you!

  95. leigh says:

Awesome. If I ever get held hostage and the husband isn’t around to save me, I’ll know who to call!

  96. Jeff G. says:

I would rather shoot out of doors. But even here in Colorado we have to drive about an hour to find a place. First time I shot it was out of doors.

The range is good for ideal zeroing conditions. And because it’s about an 8 minute drive from my house, and a 5 minute drive from my son’s school. I usually shoot before I have to pick him up in the afternoons.
