  1. Doesn’t seem like Harvard thinks much of academic freedom Jeff.

  2. Jeff Goldstein says:

Well, you’re permitted all the freedom you could ever ask for so long as you lay off the protected classes and focus your criticisms on the grand hegemons:  the US, Israel, straight white men, Republicans.

The same people spearheading this would rush to protect Ward Churchill’s right to academic free speech while disingenuously seeking to draw distinctions between Churchill as professor and Summers as a figurehead.  Individually, these world-class rationalizers are nothing more than ineffectual and mousy little bureaucrats; which is why they like to group in these “outrage collectives” in order to push their petty agendas.  They are phonies, Robin.  And I have nothing but contempt for them. “Academic freedom,” in its current incarnation, is an Orwellian term for the PC left’s near-totalitarian control over academic thought (most particularly in the humanities).  Just think about it:  the only places you CAN’T discuss the physiological differences between men and women as a way toward exploring performance inequities is in the modern academy—where honest scholarship has been usurpted by the protected orthodoxies of dubious social science.

  3. McGehee says:

    Shorter Jeff G.:

Well, you’re permitted all the freedom you could ever ask for so long as you never hope to actually USE it.

  4. Jon says:

Rats… I thought this was a plot twist for sweeps on The OC.

    ::kicks pebble::

material… as in time for new ________

  5. Diana says:

This is such really, really, really old bullshit!  I can’t believe they sense this as a new phenomenon. “collegial and consistent” with what!

Corporate and other boardrooms have been scented with sexuality for years (more than I can dare to remember).

…. waltz in with the latte, scope the chair and venue, sit, cross legs, assess potential …. conclude business!

Disagree?: as a woman (you’re lying to yourself); as a man (nuff said); if you’re gay (you have options!)

Ok, I’m ready!  Dare to argue!!!

    I’ve got a hot date – back about 10!

  6. erp says:

Summers was expected to fall on his sword before it came to this.  If he makes them all stand up and be counted, he’ll never be forgiven.

If he resigns now, he may be given a place on some foundation out of the public eye.

  7. mojo says:

His comments at an academic conference in January, where he argued that intrinsic differences between the genders partly explain why fewer women compete for top jobs in science, set off a firestorm of criticism.

    Missing words: “could possibly”

    Spambuster: know

  8. bobonthebellbuoy says:

I suppose that the truism about university politics being so vicious as the players’ in themselves mean so little is coming to pass… again. Turing word “Church”. That rings a bell.

  9. Daniel says:

Screw all this Summers stuff – I want all the naughty details on Di’s hot date!

  10. Rob A. says:

    Put it in the books:

FoxNews has a banner w/o link saying the faculty voted “no confidence.”

-Turing word “river” as in Larry Summers sold down the river.

  11. Jeff writes:

    “They are phonies, Robin.  “

You could not be more wrong, Jeff.  They are not “phonies”.  They are the overt enemies of freedom of thought, freedom of expression.

To be merely “phonies” would be an order of magnitude in improvement over the reality.

  12. Jeff Goldstein says:

    Robin —

They are phonies with regard to academic freedom.

  13. – The Summers kurfluffle works nicely to offest the Churchill quagmire… just hold your nose and don’t look too closely at the details…”liberal means never being distracted by facts”…..

turing: “freedom” …(alright Jeff drop the keyboard and step away from the turing machine)

  14. The dude who introduced the no-confidence motion against Summers is a big fan of corrupt Nigerian dictators. That’s the kind of president he wants.

  15. PatrickH says:

Am I the only one who doesn’t know what he said in the first place?

  16. Diana says:

    He said I couldn’t read a map.

    Keyword “men” !!

  17. gail says:

Yeah, and he said I couldn’t win a Nobel Prize in physics if you can imagine such a thing. Nervy bastard.

  18. mojo says:

Oh, so I guess the Nobel Prize for Curtain Treatments isn’t good enough now, huh Gail?

Women. Never shoulda given ‘em shoes…

    Spambuster: center

  19. m. jackson says:

He said I was unsure of my sexual orientation.

I’m suing his ass into Neverland…oops, I mean I am taking serious legal steps against this monster of a man whom I would find attractive were he about 45 years younger.

  20. Alpha Baboon says:

Buuuurrppppp!! Hey, one of you gals bring me another Pabst outta the frig… hurry now.. get to trottin..

  21. Daniel says:

Well, Di, I guess your date didn’t go to well then.

  22. Ana says:

    He’s in a wifebeater isn’t he?

  23. CraigC says:

I’m with you, Daniel.  C’mon, Diana, dish.

  24. Billy Joe McAllister says:

Now you gals dont go worrying your pretty little heads over stuff like Math & Physics & Chemistry and such.. Thats jes’ a big ole waste of your time.. I mean, how is physics going to help you cook a better meatloaf, I ask you..? How is math going to help you get a better wax shine on your floor.. How is chemistry going to make you look pertier for your man ? Unless of course you count mixing those hair dye chemicals, Heh-he-heh Naw, you jes leave that deep thinkin to us men and we’ll take care of everythin..

  25. Daniel says:

Be careful on that bridge, BJ.

  26. gail says:

Alpha Baboon, was that an eructation, or are you just glad to see me?

  27. Diana says:

Nothing to write home about.  Just exploring some new avenues.

  28. Ana says:

Don’t mind me. I’m just here for my MRS degree.

  29. gail says:

    NICE looking site, Diana.

  30. Diana says:

Merci beaucoup.  Have a lot of HTML to work out, though.

  31. Ana says:

You had a very good decorator. It’s homey yet streamlined.

  32. Gennarino the Deck Hand says:

Eructation?? ERUCTATION ??!! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? EERUCTATIONNNN!!!!

You cant just say ’BURP‘ can you Gail..? You always have to make with the 50 cent words to humiliate me because you know I dont know what they mean..because I’m not educated like you.. because I grew up poor without the silver spoon that you rich people had..You Capitalists are all alike, always sucking off the blood of the working man..  You’re Raffaella to my Gennarino.. Just for that you cannot have any of my Lobster.. Lets see how much your rich peoples vocabulary helps you catch your own shellfish.

.. and dont even bother bringing up sodomy..

  33. gail says:

    I must say, I’m simply swept away….

  34. gail says:

But only if we’re talking about the Lina Wertmuller original and not the stupid Guy Ritchie remake.

  35. Alpha Baboon says:

I dont want to mention that crappy Guy Ritchie/Madonna movie in the same breath with any Lina Wertmuller film…

..but on the subject of the original, do you think that movie could even be made and distributed in the US in the ‘political correctness trumps all’ atmosphere these days ?

I see an NC17 rating for domestic partner abuse.

  36. Alpha Baboon says:

I mean, we have Summers stepping down because he suggested that there could be a physiological difference between Men’s and Women’s brains that might explain observed performance differences..

What the hell would the intelligentsia say after Gennarino slapped the crap out of Raffaella for about the 10th time ? (of course they wont say anything about the 1975 original because that was Lina Wertmuller and S.A. is high cinamatic art.. and foreign as well)

  37. JWebb says:

Nice work, Lady Di. I will bookmark you.

  38. Daniel says:

I knew Ma would get her own blog someday.

So was a blog the only thing you got out of the date?

  39. gail says:

AB, I can’t believe I last saw that film in the theater in 1975! I love Wertmuller, but she was controversial even back in the 70’s–I can’t imagine how her work would be received–or even funded–now.

  40. Diana says:

No …. but I’d be embareassed to talk about it here red face

  41. Diana says:

“A sculpture at the entrance to the village depicts a naked man facing a wall of seawater twice his height.”

…. because they can’t pass the testes.
