United Auto Workers to America:  “We supported the troops…before we didn’t”

From WXYZ in Michigan:

Some U.S. Marines say they were surprised by the decision made by Detroit auto workers about parking. It all started with the cars some Marines drove, and what was on them.

The words that have some U.S. Marines in shock came from the man in charge of security at the UAW Solidarity House, on Jefferson in Detroit. For a number of years now, dozens of Marine reservists have been thankful to park in the UAW’s lot for weekend training with no problem at all – until now.

Marines at nearby Marine Corps Reserve Center say on Tuesday morning, the director of security at the UAW told them that while they support the troops, Marines driving foreign vehicles or sporting a President George Bush bumper sticker were no longer welcome to park there.

U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Joe Rutledge told Action News, “We received a phone call from the UAW, who support us by letting us park down at their facility. They called and said they weren’t going to allow or they would turn away some vehicles.”

A spokesman for the UAW released a statement to Action News which reads:

“While reservists certainly have the right to drive non-union made vehicles and display bumper stickers touting the most anti-worker, anti-union president since the 1920s, that doesn’t mean they have the right to park in a lot owned by members of the UAW.”

Somewhere in Manhattan, Michael Moore is smiling wryly and eating a family size jar of Skippy peanut butter.  With his fingers.  And toes…

Giving the term “union thug” a whole new meaning.

  2. stiv says:

I wonder if the parking ban applies to UAW members driving Toyotas as well.

  3. TallDave says:

“We support our troops—but not our troops right to support their Commander-in-Chief!”

  4. Hoodlumman says:

There’s a pretty good reason to buy foreign cars if I’ve ever seen one.

  5. CraigC says:

That’s OK, we can do our part by not buying their cars.  Myself, I haven’t owned an American car since my ‘71 Nova beater.

  6. Ana says:

Is that a Free Speech issue? I mean if they weren’t allowed to park there because they had a Communist bumper sticker it sure as hell would be an issue of Free Speech.

  7. Alpha Baboon says:

“We support our troops – just not our troop’s constitutional right to Freedom of Speech or Freedom of Expression – because this war is the wrong war at the wrong place at the wrong time: Bush lied about the WMDs and Bush is Hitler !”

    -UAW

Dont these same anti-Bush Union people produce the Hummers for GM for Bush’s Military?..

    The Hypocrisy !!!

    Keyword: look

As in: Look deeper & follow the money

  8. Matt Moore says:

But what if that Toyota was made somewhere in Indiana by a union member?

  9. Hoodlumman says:

As owners of the lot, I’m betting they can allow and disallow parking rights as they choose.

It still doesn’t make that statement or their union suck less dues-collecting wiener.

  10. UAW is just another leftist dominated thug union.  They do not represent their members views and don’t care that they don’t.

  11. Percy Dovetonsils says:

Don’t worry, guys.  At the rate both GM and Ford are going, the UAW will be in same place as the Wobblies – solely in the history books.

  12. Robert says:

We support the Kerry-voting, GM-driving Marines.

    All three of them.

  13. SteveL says:

Just another reason why I won’t buy vehicles made by UAW workers….as if the lousy quality wasn’t enough.

  14. Ana says:

Yes. You’re right about the owners of the lot. They can do whatever they damn well please with the private space can’t they?

    AH! SMELL THE FREEDOM!

  15. Murel Bailey says:

Does the UAW say “no one can defend us if they didn’t vote for John F. Iscariot or drive a foreign car?” Or are the rules different when they want to take something for granted?

  16. JWebb says:

Moore probably saves the “chunky Skippy” for his Thigh Master.

  17. Beck says:

Pfft.  Like Moore could get his toes within 5 feet of his mouth.

  18. Alpha Baboon says:

So what happened to the good old days when it was just The Mob that controlled the unions ? When did these ultra left ideologues usurp the union reins of power ? Give me a good old fashioned capitalist Mafia Capo over a commie liberal any day. Michael Corleone over Michael Moore any day.

  19. BLT in CO says:

It’s sad, really.  Next to the coffee pot at work there’s a vending machine with a “UNION MADE” sticker prominently displayed.  My brain instantly replaces that text with the words “POORLY MADE”.

After unions annihilated the US steel industry, bankrupted the airline industry, crippled the auto industry, and drove whole grocery chains out of business, you’d think a little introspection was in order.  Something along the lines of, “What could we do to improve our image and make the words UNION MADE an asset and not a liability?”

You’d think.  But you’d be wrong.

  20. J Mann says:

bumper stickers touting the most anti-worker, anti-union president since the 1920s

I HATE this kind of historical blindness.  Even if I were to buy into the unions’ twisted worldview, by what possible standard is Bush more “anti-worker” and “anti-union” than Ronald Reagan?

  21. Alpha Baboon says:

I dont think Michael Moore is literally eating peanut butter with his toes.. but rather is simply holding the large family size jar between his feet to free up both hands to shovel PNB into his gaping maw. I’ve seen bears and large apes do that trick, although theyre less messy about it.

  22. Carin says:

In my “no-readers” blog, I brought this up yesterday … I was so steamed (I live in Detroit, and know intimately the parking lot, and Marine armory they are talking about.) It took all my strength to just DRIVE by yesterday and not turn in and give them a piece of my mind.

It doesn’t need to be mentioned, but the Reserve units are OBVIOUSLY using this on weekend, when, of course, UAW employees are elsewhere.

I also want to go and ask all those Good Americans in the UAW if they buy only American … doubt it. Think they don’t shop at Walmart?  That they don’t own a Sony or two???  I’m not mad because they don’t have the “right” to do it … but because they are total JERKS.

  23. gail says:

Moore probably saves the “chunky Skippy” for his Thigh Master.

    Wouldn’t the chunks, like, chafe?

  24. gail says:

    Michael Corleone over Michael Moore

What a nauseating image! (Not that there’s anything wrong with it.)

  25. Mad Anthony says:

I wonder if they would be cool with my car.  It’s a Chrysler PT Cruiser.  What could be more American?

Answer: Pretty much anything.  It was made in Mexico.

  26. PlutosDad says:

    one:

While we’re at it, why don’t we ask UAW why they donate their union member’s fees to United Way and Planned Parenthood instead of spending it on collective bargaining?

turing word: day, As it, it will be a cold day in hell before the Unions give up their money and power holding the working man down

  27. PlutosDad says:

    Damn you!

Now I can’t get that image of Moore eating peanut butter with his toes out of my head!

    AUguuggghhh!!!

I won’t be able to eat for a week.

  28. Big Dan says:

The Marines sincerely regret that we will be forced to save the UAW’s own worthless *sses along with the rest of the citizenry.

Turing word: “Four”. As in, what’s the U.A.W. FOR?
