While I’m waiting for the FN FNX 45 Tactical to come to market…

I think I’m going to pick up one of these.

Anybody have one?

  1. DarthLevin says:

Don’t have one of those, but I’m seriously looking at one of these.

  2. Abraham says:

    Jeff,
I’ve got a PT145 (the .45ACP compact version), and it’s a nice weapon, but a little bulky for carry (IMO). My daily carry piece is a Walther PK380, and I love it.

    Darth,
My Krav Maga instructor’s wife carries one of those. Pretty slick weapon.

  3. cranky-d says:

Before it was lost in a tragic boating accident, I had one of these.

  4. scooter says:

I have this – nice weapon, reliable and accurate. No hands-on with any Taurus firearm so I can’t give you a good comparison, sadly.

  5. geoffb says:

I’ve had one of their model 85‘s for over 25 years with no problems with it. presently looking at getting one of these for my wife ( and myself too of course).

  6. cranky-d says:

The reviews for the XD-45 were positive, and the price is good.

  7. Jeff G. says:

    Abraham —

My wife is looking at that Walther for her carry. Me, I’m leaning toward the EAA Witness P Carry, or maybe an HK 45 compact for carry.

The FNX 45 Tactical and this Taurus will be a couple of my SHTF pistols. Sadly, both are tough to find, as both have been discontinued — largely because they were developed for potential military contracts and that program has been discontinued, but also because the market is gearing more toward concealed carry, and this suckers are big. Being polymer framed, though, they aren’t terribly heavy, and the balance on both is very very nice.

  8. serr8d says:

    Taurus. No.

Ruger, S&W, Colt, Springfield, Beretta, Sig, yes.

  9. serr8d says:

    NTTAWWT. )

  10. Silver Whistle says:

Only experience with Taurus is with Dad’s .357 wheelgun. No polymer anywhere.

  11. serr8d says:

Oh, and a Kel-Tec. But it’s up for trade.

  12. Abraham says:

    Jeff,
I really can’t recommend Walther enough; my wife carries one also. Like I said, my Taurus is a good gun, I just don’t like carrying anything with a double-stack mag, because I’m a T-shirt and jeans kind of guy and concealing is a bit of a challenge. For SHTF, I have a 1911, and for SRHTFF (shit really hits the fucking fan), I’ve got a Mossberg 500 with foldover stock, pistol grips, and ghost ring sights. In any case, good luck on your hunt.

  13. Jeff G. says:

    Serr8d —

Taurus had problems in the past, but these are supposedly very reliable guns. And they carry a lifetime warranty on the gun. Not for the original owner, but for the gun.

When the Joint Competition Pistol program was cut, this Taurus was still being considered (it is being used by Brazil’s military or law enforcement, I believe); and for the price (you can find a few remaining new and some used on the market for between $350-$500), you’re getting a lot here: SA/DA, security system, rail, etc. Read up on it. Might be worth picking one up if you can find it.

  14. Blitz says:

Jeff- not that I can own one here in the Peoples Republic, but if I could? I’d own a Ruger SR40c. Sweet shooting and has never failed, well , somebody. Not too expensive, various grips available.

  15. Conrad Hensley says:

The days move along with regularity, over and over…one day indistinguishable from the next.

    A long continuous chain.

Then suddenly, there is a change.

  16. bh says:

Got invited to go to the range tomorrow with a friend who shoots with a club of a dozen or so guys every couple months. Guess there’ll be something like 30 different handguns to look over and fire.

I’m excited. And they have a cookout afterwards.

  17. Blitz says:

    Hmmm…Wisconsin? See you tomorrow bh!!

  18. bh says:

OT: If Presidents they elect can do these things, I demand that Presidents we elect act in an equivalent fashion.

Likewise, if they can pass a bill through reconciliation I do not accept that we can’t fully repeal it through reconciliation. 85%? And that 15% just so happens to be the stuff that you’re worried about being popular? Paul Ryan, you’re losing my trust.

  19. bh says:

Heh, Blitz. The only down side is that it’s a bit of a drive north even for me.

  20. Blitz says:

plane flight, renting a car…or just driving straight out ( about 22 hours ) hmm… well, on second thought? maybe not.

  21. Blitz says:

I do expect a full and thorough diary of the days activities bh. If not? I may not be able to sleep with all the fevered dreams of the festivities.

  22. Silver Whistle says:

My great grandmother’s was passed on to me in My – the SN dates it 1906. Man, the sights suck. I guess at 10′ range, that wasn’t so important – not snagging on your pocket lining was the main consideration.

  23. Jim in KC says:

My brother’s got a PT140 that I’ve shot a bit. Smaller than that one.

His PT140 has something badly wrong with the sights; it shoots low. Very low. As in, “aim for center mass, hit the bad guy in the nuts at 15 feet” low. If it was mine, I’d send it back to get it unfucked. He just aims high, I think.

It *could* be me, but I don’t miss like that with any of our 1911s, the PM40, the PPK/S, or the 686.

  24. Jim in KC says:

We have one of those in the family, too, SW. Pretty sweet little piece. John Browning was the man…

  25. Silver Whistle says:

Yes, he sure was, Jim. I love his Superposed shotgun, the Auto 5, the Hi Power, and of course the 1911. And if my boys really loved their dad, they would be getting him a High Wall for Christmas.

  26. Conrad Hensley says:

bh – It will never be repealed.

    Now here’s a 6.5×52mm Mannlicher-Carcano. Isn’t that a sweet little gun?

I only sell quality goods to the right people.

  27. bh says:

Speaking of Browning, an X-Bolt is on my list. Thinking a 30-06.

Then my great grandchildren can talk about how awesome I was.

  28. Silver Whistle says:

They’ll be using lasers, bh. Bolt guns will be so 2012.

  29. bh says:

It might come in handy during the great photon shortage of 2087 then.

  30. Silver Whistle says:

Seriously, bh, in all likelihood they will still be using it. My primary hunting shotgun was manufactured in 1894; my deer rifle is 70 years old, and great granny’s 1903 is still perfectly usable. Good firearms don’t seem to wear out if well maintained (apart from barrels on target rifles, it seems).

  31. scooter says:

I notice a lack of Glock love in this thread. Too trendy, overpriced? Just curious.

  32. cranky-d says:

I doubt the notion of bullets will be improved upon for a long time. The gunpowder stores a lot of energy in a small package.

  33. JD says:

    H&H Nitro Express !!!!!!!!!

  34. Jim in KC says:

I notice a lack of Glock love in this thread.

Butt-ugly and bad ergonomics. Nasty, gritty, heavy, long trigger pull. If you ever wondered why the cops fired 15 rounds and hit the suspect twice, the latter two are your answers.

They are tough and reliable, though.

  35. Conrad Hensley says:

OK, fun time is over ladies. These are the essentials:

    MP5K-PDW with red-dot sights
    G36 rifles using SS109 rounds
Glock practical tacticles in .357 Sig
PSG-1 using Fed Gold Medal .308
Starlight scope for the PSG-1 in case we lose power in the building
    Glock 27 backup guns
    Kahr P-9 holdouts

Remember: the key to home defense is in not being predictable.

  36. Silver Whistle says:

I notice a lack of Glock love in this thread.

Glocks are too ugly to love – they are respected for the fine tools they are, but love? Love requires some aesthetics. Like JD’s H&H.

  37. bh says:

Remember: the key to home defense is in not being predictable.

    Get an apartment instead?

    Break into their house first?

Attack bears that throw monkeys trained in knife-fighting?

  38. Silver Whistle says:

Put out on the first date?
    Leave the toilet seat down?

  39. Conrad Hensley says:

Glocks are too ugly to love

Glocks are pure of form and function.

Glocks are squared away like marines.

    Semper fi.

  40. Blitz says:

Glocks? not sweet shooters, not very accurate, heavy and yeah….NO GLOCKS ( not that I know anything about handguns, mine were lost like squids, but there was a heavy freeze at the time(. I really prefer Ruger. I may or may not stick by them and they may or may not pefrorm flawlessly.

  41. Blitz says:

    Please ignore the typos above.

  42. Conrad Hensley says:

Attack bears that throw monkeys trained in knife-fighting?

Sure, it’s easy to be cavalier about it…now.

  43. eCurmudgeon says:

I notice a lack of Glock love in this thread. Too trendy, overpriced? Just curious.

Not a fan – no secondary (grip/thumb) safety and too many stories of AD/NDs for my taste.

  44. LBascom says:

Remember: the key to home defense is in not being predictable.

That’s why I keep a sword under my pillow.

  45. JD says:

    SW is so wise.

  46. Silver Whistle says:

As wise as JD is generous.

  47. bh says:

Sure, it’s easy to be cavalier about it…now.

Just joking around, Conrad. Not trying to bust your balls here.

  48. Conrad Hensley says:

J\ust joking around, Conrad. Not trying to bust your balls here

    No offense taken.

FWIW, I recommend that most civilians stick with shotguns.

They’re tactically efficient at short range and require little training.

  49. Silver Whistle says:

FWIW, I recommend that most civilians stick with shotguns.

    Makes Mexican carry interesting.

  50. Conrad Hensley says:

    Makes Mexican carry interesting

    In what sense?

  51. Silver Whistle says:

Sticking a shotgun down your trousers. Might make your butt look fat.

  52. Conrad Hensley says:

Sticking a shotgun down your trousers. Might make your butt look fat.

Just because you’re “hip” with Hollywood’s Gay Socialist agenda doesn’t mean I am.

I hope you enjoy being a paid smuggler who hates liberty.

[When you come back to this tomorrow, Silver Whistle, you’ll see in another thread that this was an old troll.]

  53. bh says:

I think the internet has gone insane.

  54. Blitz says:

I agree bh, but who am I to say? Ask Conrad.

  55. cranky-d says:

    WTF is wrong with Conrad?

  56. cranky-d says:

    Never mind. I know now.

  57. Swen says:

As a traditionalist I’m obligated to scoff — Scoff! — at anything not designed by Saint Browning and chambered in .45 acp. On the other hand, any gun in hand is better than the finest ever made on backorder. The First Rule of gunfighting is “have a gun”. Until you’ve remedied violation of that rule any other recommendation is moot.

And if you’re worried about making a bad choice? Every gun I’ve ever bought is now worth more than I paid for it. Gunz are the best investment you can make. Buy lots!

  58. Silver Whistle says:

    WTF is wrong with Conrad?

Nothing that a lifetime of experience, a sense of humour, and a desire to learn couldn’t fix.

  59. ThomasD says:

no secondary (grip/thumb) safety and too many stories of AD/NDs for my taste.

Given how the Glock safe trigger functions, and how so many other manufacturers have adopted it, or similar features, those can hardly be called accidental discharges.

The only way a Glock goes off is when a booger hook is on the bang button. So those are due to negligence each and every time.

And that’s purely on the fool in possession, not the item possessed.

But, I do have concerns about Glock ka-booms, particularly with a round originally designed for a fully supported chamber. Jeff seems most interested in .45 acp. If he was ok with .40 S&W I’d say a Glock would be a good utilitarian (if not especially ‘fine’) option.

  60. Jeff G. says:

The FNP 45 Tac is supposed to handle the better ammo well. But it does have an unsupported chamber. Probably shouldn’t matter w/ .45 ACP but I’m still a bit leery. It really seems to depend on how meticulously placed the barrel is. A few mm off and you’re leaving a bit of thin exposed cartridge. There have been a handful of accounts of bulging ammo and one or two kbs. Typically this will happen on reloads, but at least one guy had it happen with factory ammo.

That’s one of the reasons why I’m still kinda holding out for the FNX 45 Tac, which (rumor has it) addresses the tight mag, improves the grip, and I’m hoping reconsiders the unsupported chamber, given that those who buy this pistol will be putting some +p ammo in it. Thanks to Pablo. Who made me buy the stuff.

Re: Glocks. I talked to Froggy (a SEAL) and that’s what he likes. I found the grip too boxy on the ones I tried on, and I like the DA/SA w/ decocker on the FNP/X and the Taurus. It’s a matter of preference, I guess. I like the Beretta PX4 Storm, and also the HK 45. If I get a .40 it’ll probably be the FNX.

  61. SDN says:

They’ll be using lasers, bh. Bolt guns will be so 2012.

SW, you may be surprised at what sees effective use in the future… 8-)

From David Weber’s Honor Among Enemies (4022 AD, 1921 Post Diaspora):

The shuttle’s com lasers could still get the detonation order through, but even as the jammer went into action, the end of the case opened and the familiar weight of a cocked and locked .45 automatic slid out into her hand.
None of Warnecke’s men realized anything had happened, for the seat in front of Honor hid the case from them. Besides, they knew she was unarmed, for they’d checked the case without finding the giveaway power source of a pulser or any other modern hand weapon. The possibility of a something so primitive it used chemical explosives had never even occurred to them.
Honor’s expression didn’t even flicker as she brought the pistol up in a smooth, flowing motion, and its sudden, deafening roar filled the passenger compartment like the hammer of God. The bodyguard named Allen had his flechette gun ready, but he never even realized he was dead as fifteen grams of hollow-nosed lead exploded through his forehead, …

  62. Blitz says:

I saw this somewhere, can’t remember exactly.

“.45AVP because shooting twice is silly.”

  63. Blitz says:

    crap.ACP

    Please ignore the typo above.

  64. Swen says:

Shoot ’em twice anyway, ammo is cheap.

  65. Slartibartfast says:

Dunno how anyone could possibly have a hard time shooting with a glock.

  66. lurker says:

Twenty year defensive pistol shooter. If you are buying a firearm for CCW and/or defense, I would reccomend you purchase a Glock, or something with a long track record. I won’t waste your time on the myramid of reasons why , just the important ones.

    1) Consistant trigger pull.

    2) Decades of proven relibility.

    3) Very simple operation. You can easily learn to strip it down to the frame, and do your own mantainence.

Do not put any after market parts besides sights on it. If you get one in .40, you can convert it to 9mm, or .357 SIG.

Learn the basics from a competent instructer.

Particpate in IDPA or IPSC competitions.

    Have fun.
