Someone on the site (Mike?) recommended the Dan Simmons novel Flashback. I like Simmons and gave it a try.
The book is marketed as being about Flashback. It is really about After.

It’s not pretty.
It seems like a Michael Crichton shift for Simmons, though Crichton did get a few very successful movies made before he came out as a classical liberal. Simmons has his most sympathetic character, an emeritus English professor, deliver an internal monologue reminiscent of David Mamet’s transition from Brain Dead Liberal to classical liberal.
150 pages in but I’m going to give it a “highly recommended” and thanks for the tip.

We’ve actually gained more congregants in the past couple of years at my tiny parish, jdw. Part of it is the influx of hispanics who have moved up here from Texas to work in the chicken houses. Another part of it is younger members who now have children and are rediscovering their faith now that their own little ones are getting baptised or ready for their First Communion.
In Proverbs it says “Train children up in the way they should go and when they grow old, they will not depart from it.”
We are living in trying times and Obama has stepped on some toes pretty hard. Honestly, I’ve felt the energy change and people are pissed, not scared. This isn’t our first rodeo or the first Muslim who had to be taken to school. Bring it on, is the message I’ve been hearing.
