“Thug culture”? Organized wrestling? Uh, the kid is competing in national tournaments and is likely on the radar of USA Wrestling. He’s participating in a grueling individual sport at a high level. Which, let me tell you, takes tons of practice and drilling and dedication. At age 8.
This is the very opposite of “thug culture.”
Anyway, I posted this because it got my son psyched to drill more. He’s enrolled right now in a three-day camp with a few former NCAA champs coaching. He’s got a lot of potential, my boy, and it’s nice for him to see how hard work pays off.
My four year old does TKD. Just moved up to the big kids classes, but still too young for the JJ classes. He has the exact same walk. Doesn’t have quite the same moves just yet though.
That kid has some good moves. More than that, he seems to be able to improvise extremely well. Those throws were beauty, and they’re only going to get better as he gets more rounds under his belt.
This level of skill is something that only comes after lots and lots of practice, if then. It probably helps to have some natural ability, but he’s obviously been well-coached and well-trained.
He’s participating in a grueling individual sport at a high level. Which, let me tell you, takes tons of practice and drilling and dedication.
True dat. My boy has only been wrestling for three years, but it has made a world of difference for him. He’s a freshman varsity letterman and a bad ass, now. 120 pounds of solid muscle and steel.
Nr, you are reading wrestling wrong. It doesn’t teach you to be a thug, it teaches you control and discipline. My boy has always been an excellent student, but wrestling has focused him on being the best at all endeavors, to be kind and not to bully.
It doesn’t hurt that chicks dig muscle-y dudes in letter jackets, either.
Not all of ’em, leigh, and thank goodness for that. ‘Cuz I gotta say, it only takes a few minutes to apply the lipstick and the hairspray. A wrestler’s or swimmer’s physique? That shit takes years…
My little girl has been doing TKD for about 2 years now, and dance and tumbling for about 5. She trains hard every week, and I am amazed at some of he feats she can pull off. She’s only 8 but growing in to a fine, athletic, well-adjusted and confident person. I credit a lot of that to the dance and TKD.
Interesting Jonah Goldberg article, despite the conflation of conservative and Republican establishments —something Jonah’s usually pretty good avoiding.
Wrestling is a great sport, one that is hard to beat for all around physical conditioning. If this kid can stay motivated and not burn out, he will go far.
Hewitt and Article VI contend that Kevin is seeing conspirators everywhere, and besides, what they’re doing is perfectly legal and just capitalism as usual.
I’ve e-mailed Hugh and given him what-for, plus I posted a comment at Article VI expressing same (but it hasn’t appeared yet), plus during the interview I was on the feed with the Tribbles expressing my disappointment.
Good for you, di. I just read that piece yesterday and Hewitt’s transcript today and HH sounds like an idiot or Bill O’Reilly when he’s trying to make KW’s argument all about the Bilderbergers. What a loon.
Hewitt and Article VI contend that Kevin is seeing conspirators everywhere, and besides, what they’re doing is perfectly legal and just capitalism as usual.
Hey, it’s either crony-capitalism or crony-socialism. Make your choice
Everyone knows that Hewitt is in the bag for Romney. That’s not the problem: Kevin didn’t accuse Romney of being corrupt. He accused the Big Finance peeps of wanting to buy him.
Hugh swatted down a perfectly good argument against corruption with some of the worst logical fallacies this side of an Obama speech.
Kevin is really being pilloried for disagreeing with Common Wisdom™ or at least the wisdom according to Hewitt, et al.
Rather than taking an opportunity to explore a thoughtful, well researched piece by Williamson, Hewitt tried his hardest to paint Wall Street as a bunch of Trve Conservatives wrongly being painted as Opportunistic Crooks. Which of course they are. Crooks, that is.
Hugh’s not the only one with an addled and lame argument. John Schroeder’s it’s “legal [and] not really even unethical” sniff at Williamson’s account of Congressional insider trading and favor swapping in return for campaign cash and lobbyist funded perquisites of office (to say nothing of the way repurchase agreements were used and abused), is worthy of a solid B+ (on the Obama curve) as far as argumentation goes.
Well shoot John, what’s the point in buying the lawmakers if they won’t make the law?
John Schroeder doesn’t have a bio on his site. If he’s an attorney he must have missed those classes that dealt with legal and business ethics. Or perhaps is just a matter of the lawmakers staying bought? In which case; shut up, he explained.
My comment still has not shown up at Article VI, and neither has anyone else’s.
Sounds like they’re just not taking feedback of any kind. Maybe they know they’ve been caught in their stupidity.
Thing about Article VI, they’re lawyers of different faiths, including LDS, who started the blog last election cycle to combat anti-Mormon bigotry against Romney.
Fair enough.
But if you’re going to defend Romney’s Mormonism, you could have the courtesy to not use flagrant sophistry, thankyouverymuch.
Ah, thanks for clearing that mystery up, di. What are the odds of the Romney is weird, e.g., Mormon, rumors that were being floated at Camp Obama being put into gear? And if so, when?
I don’t think that the scenario of weirdness has legs this time around. Actually, I didn’t think it did last time around either, but especially not now with two Mormons in the race and Glenn Beck being all loud and proud, even if he is a convert. Converts tend to know a lot of nuts and bolts that cradle members of any faith may not.
Republicans are far more comfortable with a Mormon in the White House than Democrats or independents, according to a new Salt Lake Tribune national poll, which also found that polygamy is the most cited reason for those who have reservations.
Three-fifths of likely U.S. voters, or 60 percent, were “very comfortable” or “somewhat comfortable” voting for a Mormon for president, while 26 percent were uncomfortable to some degree and 14 percent were unsure.
Among Republicans, the comfort level shot up to 76 percent, with 14 percent uncomfortable, while 61 percent of independents were comfortable and 27 percent uncomfortable with the prospect of an LDS commander in chief.
Fewer than half of Democrats, 46 percent, were comfortable with a Mormon president, with 36 percent uncomfortable.
I’m a little annoyed that Matt Romney aka Son of Mitt, took back his little jab at the prez.
“You can see Dad’s tax returns when we can see Obama’s grades and birth certificate.” (Paraphrase) I don’t see anything wrong with that. While I’m quite certain that Mitt’s tax returns are in order, I’m not so sure about Obama’s grades. Honestly, I don’t care about his birth certificate. That horse has left the barn, but I would like him to hand over his medical records since I suspect the guy is a boozer.
I want this to be my kid. He’s in Tae Kwon Doe instead of wrestling, but that should work, right?
Recognize?
Ali-G is sooooooooo dead.
Just sayhin’
“Stahynes,” Wes’-side.
i think thug culture is vile. or evil. juxtapose the letters. or ax baracky?

That kid is awesome. It is not “thug culture” to excel.
256-26? 50 pounds of fury. Sweet.
My four year old does TKD. Just moved up to the big kids classes, but still too young for the JJ classes. He has the exact same walk. Doesn’t have quite the same moves just yet though.
In interview at Pablo’s link the kid’s dad is wearing a Cornell Wrestling shirt,
Friend of yours, Jeff?

[…] Jeff G. we see an example of the […]
‘Course, chicks also apparently dig douchey, Volvo-driving emo vampires what look like sparklier versions of Robert Smith, so, you know… chicks.
Yeah, John, but those chicks are, ya know fat and goth and like to cut themselves.
Not all of ’em, leigh, and thank goodness for that. ‘Cuz I gotta say, it only takes a few minutes to apply the lipstick and the hairspray. A wrestler’s or swimmer’s physique? That shit takes years…
I’m all about the shortcuts, baby!
Wasn’t nr reacting to batboy’s comment? Or am I missing something?
Well, Squid, chicks also like the funny. So you got it made!
I thought nr was reacting to the music, which I didn’t care much for either.
That’s probably it then.

Just FYI: A bit of an ongoing scuffle between Hugh Hewitt and the Article VI blog on the one hand and Kevin Williamson on the other about Kevin’s “Repo Man” article (which is a must-read).

Hewitt is in the bag for Romney. http://evilbloggerlady.blogspot.com/2011/12/wall-street-repo-men.html I posted the Willamson link about Hewitt.
And on the other hand: http://evilbloggerlady.blogspot.com/2011/12/running-for-president-is-good-for.html Newt came to do good, and is doing quite well!
Everyone knows that Hewitt is in the bag for Romney. That’s not the problem: Kevin didn’t accuse Romney of being corrupt. He accused the Big Finance peeps of wanting to buy him.

Warren Jeffs is back in the headline rotation of my CNN mobile feed, shit like that make me want to vote for Romney.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.
Godspeed, newrouter.
That’s a lot of good technique for a kid that age. Iowa give him a scholarship yet?
